How Do Scientists Model the Universe on a Supercomputer?

Scientists translate cosmological theories into numerical rules, run them across supercomputer processors, and compare the resulting predictions with telescope observations.

Scientists model the universe by turning a cosmological theory into numerical rules, setting starting conditions, and calculating how matter changes over time. A simulation might follow gravity and dark matter across a vast region, or add gas dynamics and galaxy-scale processes. Supercomputers divide these calculations among many processors. The result is a set of predictions to compare with telescope observations—not a photograph or a complete copy of the universe.

What is actually inside a universe simulation?

A simulation starts with a scientific question: for example, how cosmic filaments form or how galaxies evolve. Researchers choose a cosmological framework, define initial conditions, and encode the relevant physical laws as equations a computer can calculate. The model then advances through many time steps.

What the computer tracks depends on the question. Large-scale structure studies often emphasize gravity and dark matter. Models focused on galaxies may also represent ordinary matter as gas and calculate hydrodynamics and other galaxy-scale processes. NASA describes cosmic-web modeling that combines gravity, hydrodynamics, and cosmology to follow matter, dark matter, and dark energy. NASA Science explains how researchers map the cosmic web.

How do scientists represent so much matter?

Rather than calculate every particle in the universe, a simulation represents the system with computational elements and numerical methods. In some models, N-body methods track the gravitational evolution of elements; hydrodynamic methods are used when gas behavior matters. A model’s resolution describes how finely it represents the system, while its simulated volume describes how much space it covers.

These choices depend on the scientific goal: a larger volume can show broad cosmic structure, while greater resolution can reveal finer detail. Including more kinds of physics also adds work. There is no single element count, resolution, or set of processes used by every universe simulation.

Why use a supercomputer?

Many computational elements interact, and the model must calculate their evolution repeatedly across time steps. Increasing the simulated volume, the resolution, or the included physics generally increases the computational workload. A supercomputer makes these large calculations practical by distributing parts of the work across many processors that operate in parallel.

The scale varies by project. NASA reports that hundreds of processors on its Pleiades supercomputer were used for the dwarf-galaxy project. Separately, the U.S. Department of Energy describes ExaSky cosmological simulations designed for exascale machines. These examples illustrate different high-performance-computing efforts; they are not universal hardware requirements or a current ranking of machines. NASA’s project account and the Department of Energy’s ExaSky overview provide details.

Historical figures need their dates and contexts. NASA’s 2009 backgrounder identified 8 billion particles in the Bolshoi simulation; that is a figure for that project, not a general or current benchmark. NASA’s 2009 account of the Bolshoi simulation gives the historical context.

Cosmologist Katrin Heitmann once compared a specific project on Argonne’s now-retired Theta machine with a laptop: “Using Argonne’s now-retired Theta machine, we accomplished in about nine days what would have taken around 300 years on your laptop.” The comparison describes that project and hardware, not a general performance ratio for today’s laptops or simulations. NASA’s account of the quotation and project provides its context.

How do simulations connect to telescope observations?

A simulation produces predictions that researchers can test against observations. It may suggest where matter or cosmic filaments should lie, or how galaxies should develop. In one example described by NASA, scientists used a three-dimensional computer model to estimate the locations of cosmic filaments, then examined archival Hubble observations for gas at those predicted locations. NASA’s cosmic-web account describes this comparison.

NASA’s ChaNGA project is another example of simulation results being used to interpret observations from missions such as Hubble. NASA Advanced Supercomputing describes ChaNGA’s multi-scale galaxy modeling. When a prediction and observation agree, that supports the model within the conditions tested; a mismatch can prompt scientists to examine the observations, the assumptions, or the physical approximations in the simulation.

What a simulation can—and cannot—tell us

A universe simulation is a numerical model built from selected assumptions, equations, and initial conditions. Its scope is shaped by the question it is meant to answer, the volume and resolution chosen, and the physical processes included. It can help researchers explore how cosmic structures might form and generate predictions to check against data, but it is not a complete replica of the universe.
