How to Choose Between a Next-Generation Xbox, a Gaming PC, and a Handheld

A practical guide to choosing between a gaming PC, a handheld, and Microsoft's future Project Helix—based on where you play, game access, cost, and timing.

If you need a gaming device now, compare gaming PCs and handhelds against the games you play and where you want to play them. If you are considering Microsoft’s next Xbox, Project Helix, treat it as a future option: Microsoft has said it is designed to play console and PC games, but has not established its final retail specifications, price, or release date in the cited announcement.

Start with where and when you want to play

Choose a gaming PC for a desk-first setup

A gaming PC suits players who want a traditional desktop setup and access to PC storefronts. Its capabilities depend on the components in the particular machine and the requirements of each game. If you need a system now, you can compare available PCs rather than wait for a future console announcement.

Choose a handheld for play away from a desk

A handheld puts PC gaming in a portable format, with trade-offs that depend on the specific device, game, settings, and battery use. Some models can also connect to a TV: Xbox describes docked play for the ROG Xbox Ally. Docking does not establish that a handheld performs like a desktop PC or a future Xbox.

Consider Project Helix only if you can wait

Microsoft announced Project Helix at GDC on March 11, 2026, describing it as designed to play console and PC games. The announcement frames a direction, not a consumer product specification sheet or confirmed launch plan. Microsoft’s statement is about reducing barriers between console and PC games and bringing Xbox gaming OS work into Windows. Read Microsoft’s Project Helix announcement.

Check your games, stores, and subscriptions

Make a shortlist of the games you actually play, then check which device and storefront support each one. Do not assume an Xbox license automatically gives you the PC version: access varies by title and program.

  • PC storefronts: Xbox says the ROG Xbox Ally provides access to Xbox, Battle.net, and other leading PC storefronts through an aggregated library. This is access through a Windows handheld, not a guarantee that every PC game works smoothly on it.
  • Play Anywhere: Eligible games can carry progress and achievements across Xbox console, PC, the Ally where available, and other Windows handhelds. Support is title-specific, so check the game rather than assuming the feature applies to your library.
  • Cloud and Remote Play: Xbox describes native play, cloud gaming where available, and Remote Play from an Xbox console at home. Cloud availability and subscription catalogs can vary by region, device, plan, and game.
  • Handheld compatibility: Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility Program uses “Handheld Optimized” and “Mostly Compatible” labels, plus a performance-fit indicator. Treat these as signals for particular games and supported devices, not a promise that every PC title is turnkey.

Microsoft has also described a multi-year silicon co-engineering partnership with AMD across a portfolio that includes future first-party consoles and cloud, and has characterized its next-generation lineup as spanning console, handheld, PC, cloud, and accessories. That supports an expectation of a more connected ecosystem, but does not establish that every future device will share the same games, stores, or features. Use the Ally as one specific handheld example, not as a stand-in for all handhelds

The ROG Xbox Ally is a Windows 11 handheld gaming PC sold by ASUS and Microsoft. The U.S. Microsoft Store listing accessed October 7, 2026, gave the base model a Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16 GB LPDDR5 memory, a 512 GB SSD, a 7-inch 1080p IPS display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, Wi-Fi 6E, and a 60 Wh battery. The same listing showed a starting price of $599.99 and out-of-stock status at that time; price and availability can change. Check the Microsoft Store listing for current U.S. details.

Xbox’s 2025 launch article described the higher-spec Ally X with 1 TB storage, 24 GB high-speed memory, an 80 Wh battery, and a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. The current Xbox handheld page also displays a ROG Xbox Ally X20 configuration. Do not assume that the X20 and the 2025 Ally X refer to the same configuration; check the live SKU and specifications before buying.

Understand what the PC backward-compatibility announcement covers

On July 22, 2026, Xbox announced early release on PC and supported handhelds in supported regions for four original Xbox games: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. Xbox said eligible existing digital licenses carry over for those titles, which were also available to purchase on PC and included with all Xbox Game Pass plans on the announcement date. This is a limited initial set, not evidence that the full Xbox back catalog works on Windows. Xbox’s announcement and eligibility details.

For these four games’ backward-compatibility feature—not PC gaming generally—Xbox listed minimum Windows 11 requirements of 8 GB RAM, 4 GB video memory, and a GPU at the level of an Nvidia GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 550, or Intel Arc A310. Its recommended requirements included 16 GB RAM, 8 GB video memory, and GPUs such as a Radeon RX 6800S, GTX 1070 Ti, or Arc A770. Check the requirements for each PC game you intend to play; these figures should not be used as a general gaming-PC specification.

Compare the practical trade-offs

What matters Gaming PC Handheld Project Helix
Where you play Best aligned with a desk setup; display and peripherals may be part of the cost. Portable play; some models, including the Ally, can dock to a TV. Microsoft says it is designed for console and PC games; final form and setup are not established.
Games and storefronts Check the specific PC stores and game requirements you use. The Ally offers Xbox and other PC storefront access; compatibility is game- and device-specific. Microsoft has announced a console-and-PC direction, not a complete store or game-availability list.
Performance evidence Depends on the PC’s components and each game’s requirements. Depends on handheld model, game, and settings; the cited sources do not provide desktop comparisons. Final retail specifications and comparative benchmarks are not established in the cited announcement.
Cost evidence No like-for-like or lifetime-cost comparison is established; account for the PC, display, peripherals, storage, and subscriptions as applicable. The U.S. Store snapshot for the base Ally was $599.99 on October 7, 2026, with the listing out of stock then; this is not a total ownership-cost comparison. Consumer price is not established in the cited announcement.
When you can buy Available PCs can be compared now. Models are current products, but stock and specifications should be checked for the exact SKU and region. Retail availability and launch timing are not established in the cited announcement.

Make the decision with a short checklist

  1. List your must-play games. Verify the exact version, platform, storefront, and any cross-buy or cross-progression support for each one.
  2. Choose your usual playing place. If you mostly play at a desk, compare PCs. If portability matters most, compare handheld models and the games’ handheld compatibility. If the console-and-PC direction appeals but you can wait, monitor official Project Helix announcements.
  3. Price the complete setup. Include the device plus any display, keyboard, controller, dock, additional storage, or subscription you need. The available evidence does not establish a universal cheapest option.
  4. Check the exact hardware and availability. Compare a specific PC build or handheld SKU, not broad categories; listings, prices, stock, and regional availability change.
  5. Decide how much uncertainty you accept. Buy around confirmed specifications if you need a device now. Do not buy Project Helix on the assumption that its final price, hardware, or launch date is already known.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
