Choose by comparing the exact MacBook configuration, total price, seller terms, and—if it has been used—battery condition and whether it can be erased and activated in your presence. A new MacBook is the simplest route; Apple Certified Refurbished adds documented testing and Apple’s one-year limited warranty; a used MacBook may be worth considering if the individual machine passes the checks below.

What does Apple Certified Refurbished include?
Apple describes its Certified Refurbished process as including full functional testing and genuine Apple replacement parts as needed. Apple also states that these products include the standard one-year limited warranty. The live store advertises savings of up to 15%; availability and the actual discount depend on the listing, so compare the exact configuration and current terms rather than treating that figure as a standard price reduction.

Do not infer that a refurbished MacBook has a new battery or outer shell. Apple attaches that specific promise to refurbished iOS devices, not Macs. Review the terms for the MacBook listing you are considering.

How do you check a used MacBook’s battery?
- On the Mac, Option-click the Apple menu, then open System Information.
- In the sidebar, select Hardware > Power and find the battery cycle count.
- Compare the count with Apple’s maximum cycle-count limit for that exact MacBook model using Apple’s battery cycle-count table. Apple’s listed limits vary by model; 1,000 cycles applies to many specified models, not every MacBook.
Apple recommends battery replacement once the model’s maximum cycle count is reached. A low count by itself does not prove that the battery—or the rest of the computer—is in good condition. Check the battery condition and consider likely service costs when comparing the used price with an equivalent new or refurbished listing.

How can you confirm a used MacBook is not Activation Locked?
Activation Lock can keep a Mac associated with its previous owner. Apple says the Apple Account password or device passcode is required to turn off Find My, erase the Mac, or reactivate and use it. Do not complete a private sale on the assumption that the seller will remove the lock later.

- Ask the seller to turn off Find My and remove Activation Lock, then erase the Mac. Apple explains the lock and its removal in Activation Lock for Mac.
- For supported Apple silicon or T2 Macs running macOS Monterey 12 or later, Erase Assistant signs out, turns off Find My and Activation Lock, erases the contents, and returns the Mac to setup. See Apple’s instructions for erasing a Mac.
- Before paying, proceed through setup far enough to confirm the Mac can activate and is not asking for the previous owner’s credentials.
What else should you check before buying used?
- Identify the exact configuration. “MacBook Air” or “MacBook Pro” alone is not enough to compare value. Confirm the model and configuration, then compare like with like.
- Check coverage for that serial number. Use Apple’s coverage lookup and compare the result with the seller’s claims. Coverage is individual-device information; age or a seller’s statement is not a blanket warranty guarantee.
- Inspect the machine and test relevant functions. Check its physical condition and the features you rely on in person where possible. A listing or low battery cycle count does not establish that a particular computer has been inspected or tested.
- Get the seller’s terms clearly. Confirm the return arrangement, any warranty, and proof of purchase where relevant before handing over payment.
- Compare total cost. Include likely battery service or repairs, then compare with a current new or Apple Certified Refurbished MacBook with equivalent specifications. There is no universal break-even price: it depends on the particular machine, offer, and repair needs.
Which MacBook option should you choose?
- Choose new if you prioritize a new-device condition and want to avoid prior-use battery and ownership-transfer checks. Confirm the seller’s actual price, warranty, and return terms.
- Choose Apple Certified Refurbished if a suitable configuration is available at a price you accept and Apple’s stated testing and one-year limited warranty fit your needs. Verify the specific listing rather than assuming a particular discount or battery replacement.
- Consider used if the exact machine is competitively priced after accounting for service risk, its condition and coverage check out, and you can verify that it has been erased and activated before completing the sale.
