A credit card asset-backed securities (ABS) deal is generally a way for an issuer to raise funding: receivables from card accounts are transferred to a trust or similar vehicle, which issues securities backed by collections on those receivables. For a cardholder, the deal concerns the issuer’s funding structure—not, by itself, a change to the card’s rates, rewards, billing relationship, or payment obligation.
How a credit card ABS deal works
- Card balances create receivables. When customers owe money on their accounts, the issuer has claims for repayment.
- Receivables or interests in them support a trust. The exact legal arrangement varies by issuer. American Express says it transfers card balances to its Lending Trust and Charge Trust; CIBC describes selling ownership interests in a revolving pool of receivables to Cards II Trust. American Express’s investor filings and CIBC’s financial disclosures describe their respective structures.
- The trust issues securities to investors. In the American Express structure, the trusts issue debt securities collateralized by transferred balances. The proceeds provide funding to the issuer, while investors’ payments depend on the deal’s terms and collections.
- Collections are handled under the deal documents. Customer payments and other collections support trust expenses and obligations. Depending on the structure, the documents can specify reserves, allocations to investors, and principal repayment.
Some pools revolve: as cardholders repay balances and new charges arise, new receivables may enter the pool. CIBC’s description of a revolving pool and the SEC-filed Touchstone Strategic Trust disclosure illustrate that revolving receivables are one possible structure, not a universal feature of every deal. The Touchstone disclosure states: “Credit card receivable securities are backed by receivables from revolving credit card agreements (“Accounts”).” SEC-filed Touchstone Strategic Trust disclosure.

What the deal means for your account
An ABS filing explains how an issuer funds itself and how a particular trust is structured. It does not, on its own, establish that an individual cardholder’s APR, fees, rewards, billing relationship, or payment instructions have changed. For account-specific terms, rely on the card agreement and notices from the issuer.
Investors have claims defined by the securities and deal documents; issuing those securities does not make investors the cardholder’s customer-service contact. Nor does “asset-backed” mean a car-like lien has been placed on a cardholder’s personal property. Credit card accounts are generally unsecured obligations of the cardholder.

Why receivables and credit performance matter
The pool’s collections and performance affect the cash available within the trust. Deal documents may specify performance triggers that change how cash is handled, including establishing reserves or starting early amortization. These are provisions governing the securitization, not automatic changes to an individual card account.
For example, American Express reported that no specified triggering events occurred in its Lending and Charge Trusts during the six months ended June 30, 2026. That is a statement about those disclosed trusts and that reporting period—not a finding about all credit card ABS deals. See the company’s investor filings.

Why structures differ by issuer
“Credit card ABS” describes a broad funding approach, not one identical legal arrangement. American Express reports consolidated trusts and retained variable interests. CIBC describes Cards II Trust as holding proportionate interests in receivables and reports that noteholder recourse for that structure is limited to the pool interests. A transfer therefore should not be read to mean that every issuer gives up all continuing exposure.
For a named deal, its current program documents and periodic reports are the relevant sources. Capital One’s credit card securitization investor page says Discover monthly SEC noteholder reports include collateral performance, distributions, trust metrics, and triggers; quarterly pool disclosures include receivable characteristics, delinquencies, charge-offs, payment rates, and yield.
