Choose based on the device you play on
Xbox console: Essential or Premium
If you mainly play on an Xbox console and want online multiplayer plus a library, compare Essential with Premium. Essential includes online console multiplayer and a smaller library. Premium adds a larger catalog and cloud play, with the US overview listing 10 monthly cloud-play hours.

Xbox console: Premium or Ultimate for newer releases
Premium includes Xbox-published games within one year of launch; Ultimate includes day-one releases. Xbox’s day-one note applies to select games and excludes Call of Duty titles, so check the individual game rather than assuming every new release is included immediately.
PC-first gaming
PC Game Pass is the directly PC-focused option in Xbox’s descriptions. It includes day-one titles and EA Play, but not cloud gaming. If you also play on console or want cloud access, compare the multi-device plans instead of assuming PC Game Pass covers those needs.

Several devices or cloud gaming
For play across console, PC, handheld, or supported screens, compare Premium and Ultimate by their catalogs, release timing, cloud allowance, and extras. Essential, Premium, and Ultimate include cloud play in Xbox’s plan descriptions; PC Game Pass does not. The US overview lists monthly allowances of 5, 10, and 15 hours for the three cloud-enabled tiers, respectively.
Xbox’s comparison page lists Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, Windows PC, handhelds, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Samsung and LG smart TVs, Amazon Fire TVs, Meta VR headsets, and the web at xbox.com/play among supported-device options. Support for a device does not mean every feature or game works on every plan. Cloud gaming is limited to select regions and devices, and a supported device may be sold separately.

Check the games, release timing, and benefits you will actually use
- Search for specific games. Verify each title in the current local catalog rather than choosing from the advertised game count. Availability can differ by region, plan, and platform.
- Decide how soon you need new games. Essential does not include new releases on day one; Premium’s stated window is within one year for Xbox-published games; Ultimate includes select day-one titles.
- Distinguish downloads from streaming. Check that cloud play is included in your plan and supported on your device and in your region. Apply the plan’s monthly cloud limit to your own playing habits.
- Count included memberships only if useful. Ultimate lists EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics. Their inclusion matters only if you would use them; do not treat their headline value as savings otherwise.
- Consider multiplayer and in-game benefits. Essential explicitly includes online console multiplayer and in-game benefits. Check the live comparison for the benefits relevant to your games.
Xbox says subscribers can access catalog games until the subscription ends or a game leaves the library. A title’s presence today is not a promise that it will remain available for the length of your subscription.

A quick decision checklist
- Write down your main device. If it is PC only, start with PC Game Pass. If it is an Xbox console, compare Essential and Premium first.
- Look up the games you want. Confirm they are currently included for your region, device, and prospective plan.
- Choose your release window. Decide whether waiting up to a year for Xbox-published games on Premium is acceptable, or whether select day-one releases make Ultimate worth considering.
- Estimate your cloud use. Confirm device and regional support, then compare the applicable monthly allowance if you plan to stream regularly.
- Check the live total and renewal terms. Compare the current local price, any promotion’s eligibility and duration, and the recurring amount after it ends.
