For PS5 games that must launch directly from added storage, use the console’s internal M.2 slot with a PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe Key M SSD, compliant cooling and dimensions. A USB drive is easier to install, but PS5 games stored there must be copied back before they can be played. On PS4, compatible USB extended storage can both hold and run games.
Start by choosing the storage path, then check interface, capacity, read speed, form factor, complete heatsink dimensions and cooling. Sony’s current support guidance covers a 250GB–8TB range for both PS5 M.2 expansion and USB extended storage, but it does not designate one capacity as ideal for every library.

Choose the storage path before choosing a drive
PlayStation consoles support two fundamentally different expansion approaches. The internal M.2 slot is the performance path for PS5. USB extended storage is the convenience path for adding space, archiving PS5 games and running PS4 games.

| USB extended storage on PS4 | SuperSpeed USB storage meeting Sony’s capacity guidance | Not applicable to PS4 hardware | Install, move and play applications from extended storage | Adding space to a PS4 without opening the console |
On PS5, the distinction is practical rather than cosmetic: a USB SSD may transfer games quickly, but it does not change Sony’s rule that PS5 software must be copied to internal or M.2 storage for play.

PS5 internal M.2 requirements
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s current support documentation sets the following requirements for an internal expansion drive. Check the complete drive-and-heatsink assembly, not just the bare circuit board.
| Requirement | What to look for in the specification sheet |
|---|---|
| Interface | PCIe Gen4x4 (also written PCIe 4.0 x4) NVMe |
| Keying | M.2 Key M |
| Capacity | 250GB minimum and 8TB maximum |
| Sequential read speed | Sony recommends at least 5,500MB/s |
| Supported lengths | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 |
| Maximum complete size | 110mm long, 25mm wide and 11.25mm thick, including the heatsink and any heat-transfer material |
| Cooling | An effective heat-dissipation solution, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet |
| Excluded type | M.2 SATA; Sony explicitly says, “M.2 SATA SSDs aren’t supported.” |
Why PCIe Gen4x4 and NVMe matter
M.2 describes a physical card shape, not its storage protocol. An M.2 SATA product can look identical to an NVMe product while using a different interface, so the product page must identify PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe rather than merely saying M.2. Key M is the connector configuration Sony specifies for the slot.
Read-speed claims need the right qualification
The 5,500MB/s figure is Sony’s recommended sequential-read threshold, not a promise that every game will load at a particular time. Check the manufacturer’s sequential-read specification and the capacity at which it applies. A headline speed listed only for one high-capacity variant should not automatically be applied to every model in a product family.

Form factor is only part of the fit
A bare 2280 SSD may fit within its length and width, yet fail once a thick heatsink is attached. Sony measures the whole assembly. A drive listed as 22110 already uses the maximum supported length, leaving no room for a heatsink that extends beyond the specified limit.
How much capacity should you buy?
Sony publishes a supported range, not a universal ideal. Select capacity from the number of games you intend to keep installed, how often you rotate titles and whether the drive will be a permanent library or a temporary archive.
| Capacity | Reason to choose it | Watch-out |
|---|---|---|
| 250GB–1TB | Small libraries, a few frequently played games or a lower-cost expansion | May fill quickly if several large PS5 titles remain installed |
| 2TB | A practical general-purpose target for many buyers who want room for a substantial installed library | Still not a guarantee of enough space for every household; count the games you actually retain |
| 4TB | Large libraries, frequent switching between games or less tolerance for deleting and redownloading | Verify that the specific model and heatsink remain within Sony’s physical limits |
| 8TB | The largest capacity in Sony’s stated PS5 M.2 range for users who want maximum local storage | Higher-capacity models can have different speed, thickness or firmware specifications than smaller variants |
For a general shopping search, “PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with heatsink 2TB” describes the console, interface, cooling requirement and capacity without assuming a particular brand. Treat 2TB as a starting point for comparison, not as a Sony-mandated size.

Cooling and physical installation
PS5’s internal slot expects the SSD to dissipate heat. Buy a model with a heatsink designed to stay inside the console’s clearance, or purchase a separate heatsink and heat-transfer sheet that together satisfy the complete-size limit.
Built-in heatsink versus separate cooling
- Built-in heatsink: The cooling hardware is already matched to the drive, which reduces assembly work. You still need to verify the published total thickness, width and length.
- Separate heatsink: This can work when the bare drive is compatible, but measure the combined assembly and follow the heatsink maker’s installation instructions. A second thermal layer or an oversized cover can push the assembly beyond the allowed thickness.
- No cooling hardware: Do not select a bare drive solely because its controller is fast. Sony requires effective heat dissipation for the internal expansion installation.
What to check on a product page
- Look for dimensions that explicitly include the heatsink, rather than only the PCB or NAND package.
- Confirm that the stated length corresponds to one of Sony’s supported M.2 sizes.
- Check whether the manufacturer lists a thermal pad or heat-transfer sheet in the package.
- Do not infer compatibility from a console-themed label; verify the technical specifications.
Choosing a USB extended-storage drive
For USB expansion, Sony’s guidance calls for SuperSpeed USB rated at 5Gbps or faster, with capacity from 250GB through 8TB. This route works with either an external SSD or HDD that meets the console’s requirements. The important decision is how you will use the drive.
| Use case | What the USB drive can do | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 game archive | Store and move PS5 games to free internal space | Launch PS5 games directly |
| PS4 game library on PS5 | Run compatible PS4 games directly from USB | Convert a USB connection into PS5 M.2 storage |
| PS4 expansion | Install and move applications between system storage and extended storage | Use the PS5 internal M.2 installation process |
Choose an SSD when compact size and potentially shorter transfer operations matter to you; choose an HDD when capacity and purchase cost are more important and the drive will mainly hold an archive. Neither choice changes the PS5 copy-back requirement.

A selection workflow that avoids compatibility mistakes
- Identify the console. PS5 offers an internal M.2 slot in addition to USB extended storage. Sony’s documented expansion route for PS4 is USB extended storage.
- Decide where PS5 games must launch. If games need to run from the added drive, choose the internal M.2 route. If the drive is for archiving PS5 games or running PS4 games, USB may be sufficient.
- Filter internal candidates by protocol. Require PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe and Key M. Exclude listings that identify the product only as M.2 or that specify M.2 SATA.
- Check speed and capacity for the exact variant. Confirm the manufacturer’s sequential-read figure and ensure the selected capacity falls within Sony’s supported range.
- Measure the assembled drive. Add the heatsink and thermal material to the bare SSD dimensions. The resulting assembly must fit Sony’s length, width and thickness limits.
- Prepare the console. Update PS5 system software before opening the console and installing an M.2 drive. For USB storage, use a SuperSpeed-compatible port and allow the console to format the drive when prompted.
- Plan for formatting. Formatting erases data on the SSD or USB drive. Back up anything you need before accepting the format prompt.
Installing an internal M.2 SSD in PS5
The exact cover and screw locations can vary by console revision, so use the current installation instructions for your PS5 model. The sequence below covers the decisions that matter regardless of revision.
- Update the PS5 system software and shut the console down completely. Do not install the drive while the console is running or in Rest Mode.
- Disconnect power and accessories, place the console on a stable surface and remove the expansion-bay cover according to Sony’s model-specific instructions.
- Remove the bay cover and spacer screw. Position the spacer at the hole corresponding to the SSD length: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110.
- Insert the M.2 SSD at an angle into the Key M connector. Press it down gently and secure it with the supplied screw; do not force the connector.
- Reinstall the bay cover and console cover, reconnect the cables and start the PS5.
- When the console displays the formatting prompt, read the warning and confirm only if the drive contains no data you need. Formatting prepares it for PS5 game storage and deletes existing content.
- After formatting, open the storage settings to confirm the M.2 drive is recognized. Set the preferred installation location if you want new games to go there automatically.
Using USB storage correctly
On PS5
- Connect a compatible SuperSpeed USB drive with the console powered on or according to the console’s USB-storage instructions.
- Format it as extended storage when PS5 offers the option. Formatting removes all existing data from the drive.
- Move PS5 games to USB when you need to free internal or M.2 space. To play one again, copy it back to console storage or the internal M.2 drive.
- Install or move compatible PS4 games to the USB drive if you want to run them without copying them back.
“PS5 games can be moved to USB extended storage, but they need to be copied back to console storage or M.2 SSD storage to be played.” — Sony Interactive Entertainment, PlayStation Support

On PS4
- Connect a SuperSpeed USB drive within Sony’s capacity range.
- Use the PS4 storage settings to format it as extended storage when prompted.
- Choose the drive as the installation location, or move existing applications between system storage and extended storage.
- Keep the drive connected when launching applications installed on it.
Troubleshooting compatibility and setup problems
The PS5 does not detect the M.2 drive
- Confirm the product is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe Key M, not M.2 SATA.
- Power the console down, reseat the drive and check that the spacer is positioned for its actual length.
- Inspect the heatsink for interference with the bay cover. An assembly that exceeds the allowed dimensions may not seat correctly.
- Install the latest available PS5 system software and retry the format process.
The drive is detected but cannot be formatted
- Back up any required data, because formatting is destructive.
- Restart the console and repeat the format prompt.
- Check that the drive is within Sony’s capacity range and that no third-party enclosure or adapter is being used in the internal slot.
A PS5 game will not launch from the USB drive
This is expected behavior, not necessarily a defective drive. Move or copy the PS5 game to console storage or the internal M.2 drive before playing. PS4 games are the titles Sony permits to run directly from compatible USB extended storage.

Performance does not match the internal SSD
Sony warns that it cannot guarantee every third-party M.2 SSD meeting the listed specifications will work, and some games may not perform exactly like they do on the console’s built-in Ultra-High Speed SSD. A specification match is necessary, but it is not an assurance of identical in-game behavior.
The console cover will not close
Remove the drive and measure the complete assembly, including the heatsink and thermal sheet. Do not press the cover into place. Replace the cooling hardware with a thinner, correctly sized solution if the assembly exceeds Sony’s clearance.
Example of a documented PS5-oriented SSD
SanDisk documents its Optimus GX PRO 850P NVMe SSD for PS5 as officially licensed for PS5 and PS5 Pro. The product information identifies PCIe 4.0 NVMe, a PS5-oriented heatsink and direct gameplay support. SanDisk lists up to 7,300MB/s read speed for its 1TB–4TB models. Those figures apply to the specified capacities and should not be assumed for other variants.
