How to Choose an Open-World RPG With Companions You’ll Actually Want to Travel With

Start with one decision: do you require a genuinely open map, or do you require companions whose personalities, quests, and relationships respond deeply to your behavior? Among the games covered here, Dragon Age: Inquisition is the clearest strict open-world choice, while Baldur’s Gate 3 is the stronger choice when companion agency and relationship consequences matter more than a conventional open-world map.

That distinction prevents a common disappointment: choosing a game because it is labeled “open world,” then discovering that its followers are mostly combat equipment or choosing a party RPG and expecting unrestricted, seamless wandering. Use the framework below to evaluate the kind of travel, party control, reactivity, and relationships you actually want.

What “good companions” should mean

A companion can be memorable for several different reasons, and those qualities do not automatically appear together. Before comparing games, separate the experience into five questions.

Decision axis Question to ask Why it changes your choice
World structure Is the game a seamless open world, a set of large regions, or a party-based series of areas? It determines how freely you can wander and how often companions travel with you outside missions.
Companion reactivity Do followers comment on decisions, approve or disapprove, oppose you, leave, or change their relationships? Reactivity makes choices feel personal instead of merely changing a quest marker.
Personal content Does each companion have a backstory, dedicated quests, and clear motivations? Personal content gives you reasons to keep traveling with someone after their combat role is understood.
Travel format Do you control one follower or select a party, and how much tactical control do you want? A single-follower game feels intimate; a party system creates more combinations but asks you to manage more characters.
Relationship range Can relationships become friendship, romance, rivalry, or a reason to lose a party member? A wider range makes social decisions consequential, but it can also require accepting conflict or missing content.

Score each candidate separately on these axes rather than treating “companion quality” as one rating. A game can have excellent writing but little choice reactivity, or a large map but companions who rarely participate in exploration.

  • Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
  • Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes

  • Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
  • Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. A single follower who stays beside you everywhere Decide after checking the travel format first The strongest documented evidence here concerns party-based systems, so a one-follower requirement needs separate, game-specific verification.

Open world is not one structure

Seamless open world

A seamless map lets you move between regions without selecting a separate party area or mission instance. This is the structure most players mean when they say they want “another Skyrim.” It emphasizes unscripted wandering, discovering locations in your own order, and seeing companions react during ordinary travel.

Large connected regions

Some role-playing games divide their world into broad zones. You still get substantial freedom, but transitions, loading screens, or mission boundaries shape the journey. This can support more authored companion scenes than a fully seamless map because the developers know which regions and quests a party is likely to visit together.

Party-based areas

A party RPG can offer extensive exploration without presenting one uninterrupted map. You move a selected group through towns, wilderness areas, dungeons, and story locations, often with tactical encounters between conversations. This structure can produce unusually dense companion writing because the party is designed as the core of play, not as an optional attachment to a lone hero.

  • Dodge, parry, and counter in real time, chain combos by mastering attack rhythms, and target enemy weak points using a free aim system
  • With only one year left to live, join Gustave, Maelle, & fellow Expeditioners as they embark on a desperate quest to break Paintress’ cycle of death
  • Explore an enchanting realm populated by adversaries; Wander through breathtaking landscapes, from Island of Visages to the Forgotten Battlefield

Choose the structure you will enjoy for dozens of hours, not the label on the store page. If unrestricted map travel is the point of the purchase, a party-based near-match may still feel wrong. If your priority is hearing companions argue, reveal motives, and respond to your decisions, a nontraditional map may be a worthwhile trade.

Dragon Age: Inquisition: the strict open-world choice

The comparison material identifies Dragon Age: Inquisition as the clearest strict open-world fit among these examples. It combines open-world or region-based travel with a recruitable team, companion quests, and relationship or romance arcs. That makes it the natural starting point for a player who wants companions to accompany a broad, map-driven campaign rather than a sequence of tightly bounded party areas.

Why it fits an open-world-first player

  • You travel through large explorable regions with a team rather than treating companions as occasional mission guests.
  • Recruitment gives the journey a changing group dynamic instead of locking you to one permanent partner.
  • Companion quests provide dedicated personal content alongside the main campaign.
  • Relationship and romance arcs give social choices a role beyond combat statistics.

What to verify before purchase

The available evidence does not establish exact companion counts, approval formulas, or the availability of every romance option. If one specific character, romance route, or numerical approval system is decisive for you, check a current primary-source guide for that detail before buying. The defensible recommendation is structural: choose this game when open-world travel and a recruitable team are more important than having the most explicitly documented relationship system.

Baldur’s Gate 3: the companion-depth choice

Baldur’s Gate 3 is the strongest documented match for players who want companions to possess their own agency. Larian’s official description says each companion has a moral compass and reacts to the player’s choices. Larian’s support FAQ describes Origin Characters as having personal backstories, quests, and motivations.

How far relationships can move

Larian’s official support FAQ states: “Everything that you do or say might influence the course of your relationship with them, and determine whether you’ll become friends, lovers, rivals, or bitter enemies.” That is unusually explicit evidence that relationships are designed as changing systems rather than a single approval bar. Your dialogue, decisions, and treatment of a companion can alter the type of relationship you have with that character.

Party composition and control

This is a party-based game. Larian’s FAQ says a custom character can recruit three of five Origin Characters into the party at the start. The PlayStation Store description supports a party of up to four in multiplayer and tells players to select companions carefully. That means you should expect to choose who travels with you, balance different abilities, and accept that not every character will be present for every scene.

THE BLOOD OF DAWNWALKER: Day 1 Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Day 1 Edition includes the Base Game Disc, Steelbook, and World Map.
  • Make The Story Your Own - Experience and shape the plot the way you want. Embark on the quest to save your family, or swear revenge on your sire and destroy everyone standing in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Rush in head first or risk taking time to prepare. Go alone or search for friends and forge unlikely alliances.
  • Day And Night - Experience two different gameplay loops, offering distinct abilities to choose from, mysteries to uncover, and varying ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
  • Every Action Matters - Every action - and inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.

Why it is a near-match rather than a strict open-world answer

The game’s documented strengths are companion motivations, personal quests, relationship changes, and a world that reacts to choices. Its structure is not the conventional single-map, one-follower format implied by an open-world comparison. Select it when companion agency is the priority; do not select it solely because you want unrestricted, seamless wandering.

A step-by-step way to choose your game

  1. Write your non-negotiable. Complete this sentence: “I will be disappointed if the game does not have…” If the answer is a freely explorable map, begin with Dragon Age: Inquisition. If it is companions who can become allies, lovers, rivals, or enemies, begin with Baldur’s Gate 3.
  2. Choose your travel format. Decide whether you want one dependable follower or a selectable party. A party lets you combine personalities and abilities but requires rotation and tactical decisions. The evidence in this comparison is strongest for party-based companion systems.
  3. Define the reactions you need. “Has dialogue” is too vague. Decide whether you need comments on choices, approval or disapproval, opposition, departures, or relationship changes. Only count a feature when the game’s official description or a reliable current source confirms it.
  4. Check personal content. Look for dedicated companion quests, stated motivations, and backstories. These are the features that turn a mechanically useful follower into someone you may want to take along when another character would be stronger in combat.
  5. Set your tolerance for conflict. Reactive companions may disagree with you. If rivalry or the possibility of losing a relationship sounds frustrating, favor a game whose social system you are willing to manage rather than assuming every reaction is a reward.
  6. Confirm platform and edition. For the PS5 version of Baldur’s Gate 3, the PlayStation Store lists a base-game edition and a Digital Deluxe Edition. If shopping through Amazon, search for Baldur’s Gate 3 PS5, then check whether the listing is physical or digital and confirm the region and edition before ordering.
  7. Recheck the map expectation. Before purchase, watch for wording such as “party-based,” “areas,” or “regions.” Do not infer a seamless open world from the presence of exploration alone.

Common mistakes when looking for better companions

Choosing by map size alone

A huge map does not prove that companions have motives, personal quests, or meaningful reactions. Map scale answers a world-structure question, not a relationship question. Evaluate those categories independently.

Assuming romance equals depth

Romance is only one possible relationship outcome. Friendship, rivalry, disagreement, and consequences for party membership can create stronger role-playing tension than a romance route. Ask how broadly the system responds to your behavior.

Confusing voiced banter with reactivity

Travel chatter can make a party feel lively, but it does not necessarily mean companions remember your decisions or oppose your plans. Look for evidence of choice reactions, changing relationships, and personal quests rather than counting incidental lines.

Expecting every companion to travel at once

Party limits create trade-offs. A game may give you a large roster while allowing only a smaller active group. If you want every character present for every conversation, a selective-party design may require more rotation than you enjoy.

Using unresolved comparisons as proof

The Outer Worlds and Skyrim are useful reference points for players thinking about what they want next, but the available official pages do not provide enough readable evidence here to make detailed claims about their companion mechanics. Treat them as prompts for your own comparison, not as verified examples in this guide.

Questions to answer before you buy

  • Would I reject a game with excellent companions if its world is divided into party-based areas?
  • Do I want to control a full party, or would managing several characters reduce the intimacy I want from a companion?
  • Do companions need to comment on my decisions, or is a strong personal quest enough?
  • Am I comfortable with relationships becoming rivalries or ending because of my choices?
  • Is romance essential, or would friendship and conflict satisfy the role-playing fantasy?
  • Will I rotate party members to see personal quests, or do I want one permanent travel partner?
  • Which platform and edition am I actually buying, and is the listing physical or digital?

Bottom-line decision

Pick Dragon Age: Inquisition if open-world or large-region travel with a recruitable team is the requirement you will not compromise. Pick Baldur’s Gate 3 if the defining fantasy is traveling with characters who have motivations, personal quests, moral reactions, and relationships that can become friendship, romance, rivalry, or enmity. The best choice is the one that matches your non-negotiable structure before you judge the quality of its companions.
