Shortlist accelerators that support your exact model and runtime, then compare them using an end-to-end benchmark of the training or inference job you actually need to run.
Start with the job you need the accelerator to do
Training, fine-tuning, batch inference, and online serving can have different requirements. Identify the job before comparing hardware: a system suited to a large training run may not be the best fit for low-latency serving, and a serving configuration may not suit training.

Training
For training, define the model, precision, sequence length, batch size, target training time, and distributed setup. At scale, the accelerator is only part of the system: network topology, communication overhead, host configuration, storage, and the data pipeline can affect end-to-end results.
Fine-tuning
Specify the fine-tuning method and the model configuration you intend to run. Check whether the framework, runtime, kernels, and distributed-training path support that combination; do not assume that support for a model’s inference path guarantees support for training or fine-tuning.

Inference and serving
For inference, distinguish batch processing from online serving. Set the target throughput and latency, along with the model, precision, context length, batch size, and expected concurrency. Measure those targets together: a high throughput figure is not useful if the system misses the latency or quality requirement.
Google’s documentation treats training and serving as distinct configuration needs for TPU v5e, and describes v6e for training, fine-tuning, and serving. That is a useful reminder to qualify the intended workload, not just the accelerator name. Google Cloud TPU v5e documentation · Google Cloud TPU v6e documentation
Check software support before comparing speed
Software fit is a first-order selection criterion. For the exact workload, verify support for the framework and version, runtime, model, operators, kernels, and any distributed training or serving features you rely on. Also estimate the engineering work needed to port, validate, optimize, and maintain the workload.

Compare realistic alternatives, not isolated chip claims
These options differ in software and deployment model, so the table is a shortlist—not a performance ranking. The published capacity figures below are vendor specifications; they do not establish relative performance on a particular workload.

Size memory and the whole system
Estimate memory for model weights, optimizer state where relevant, activations, and inference KV cache. Leave enough headroom for the batch size, sequence length, or serving concurrency you require. A nominal accelerator-memory figure is only one input: the model’s precision and configuration, available system topology, and software behavior also matter.

For scale-out workloads, check how accelerators connect to one another and to host systems, and whether the network, storage, and data pipeline can keep them usefully occupied. Google documents v6e configurations from individual chips through 256-chip pods; AMD’s MI300X data sheet reports accelerator memory capacity. These describe different system contexts and should not be treated as directly comparable performance results. Google Cloud TPU v6e documentation · AMD MI300X data sheet

Benchmark the workload you will actually run
Before committing, qualify each candidate with a small end-to-end benchmark. Keep the model, precision, sequence length, batch size, concurrency, and quality target consistent wherever the systems allow it. Record both performance and the configuration that produced it.
- Define the acceptance target. Set a training-time limit or inference throughput and latency target, and specify any required output quality or service level.
- Prepare the exact software path. Record framework and runtime versions, model implementation, relevant settings, and any migration or optimization work needed.
- Run the real workload. Measure end-to-end training time or requests/tokens per second at the required latency and quality. Include realistic data loading, host, network, and serving or distributed-training behavior.
- Check utilization and failure behavior. Note whether the accelerators stay busy under realistic conditions, and test the recovery behavior and operational steps needed for the workload.
- Calculate cost for the target result. Include hardware or cloud charges, hosts, networking, power and cooling where applicable, support, engineering time, and utilization—not just the accelerator’s list price or peak throughput.
A vendor’s product page or a benchmark on a different model can help identify a candidate, but it cannot tell you how that candidate will perform on your own workload. No independent, general cross-vendor performance ranking or comparable current prices are established by the sources cited here.

Include deployment and availability in the decision
For an owned system, evaluate the complete compatible server, supply, power and cooling needs, support, and operating costs. For cloud accelerators, evaluate the platform as a whole: region access, quota, capacity, instance or configuration options, networking, storage, service terms, support, and data movement. AWS Trainium and Google TPU are delivered through their respective cloud environments, so platform fit is part of the hardware decision.
Current purchase prices, cloud prices, supply, regional availability, and quotas are not established by the cited product and documentation pages. Confirm those details with the seller or cloud provider for the system, region, and date you plan to use; do not infer them from chip specifications.
