An Ethereum social recovery wallet lets a smart-contract account replace its signing key when the current key is lost, using authorization from designated guardians. It is not a customer-support reset: recovery succeeds only if the account’s rules are met, and those rules introduce risks involving guardian security, availability, and the wallet’s implementation.
What a social recovery wallet does
A social recovery wallet is a smart-contract account with a defined procedure for changing the key that controls it. If the signing key is lost or unusable, designated guardians can provide signatures or other verifiable permissions. The account checks those permissions against its recovery policy before allowing a replacement key to take effect.

ERC-7093, a draft interface proposal, separates the process into identity verification, recovery-policy verification, and the account’s recovery procedure. It allows for on-chain and other verifiable identity types, but it does not prescribe one universal wallet configuration or prove that any particular wallet is safe. How recovery authorization works
Guardians and thresholds
The account owner designates guardians and configures a rule for how their permissions count. A threshold might require a specified number of guardians, while some policies can assign weights or roles. The threshold is the authorization rule: a recovery request must satisfy it before the account accepts the key change.

In ERC-7093’s illustrative workflow, a request that meets the threshold enters a temporary recovery state and can be executed after a lock period. The proposal explicitly treats this as an example, not a requirement. Whether a wallet uses a delay, what permissions guardians have, and how a request proceeds depend on that wallet’s implementation.
The recovery sequence
- Start a request: Someone submits a proposed replacement signing key through the account’s recovery procedure.
- Collect guardian authorization: Guardians provide the signatures or other verifiable permissions required by the configured policy.
- Check the policy: The account verifies guardian identities and whether the collected permissions satisfy its threshold, weights, or roles.
- Wait or execute: If the implementation includes a lock period, the request remains pending until that period expires; otherwise, the wallet follows its own procedure.
- Apply the change: If all required checks pass and any waiting period is complete, the account replaces the old signing key with the proposed one.
This process is an authorization mechanism built into a smart-contract account. It is different from recovering a conventional self-custody wallet through a company’s support team.
Risks to consider
Guardian compromise or collusion
If an attacker compromises enough guardians—or enough guardians cooperate maliciously to satisfy the policy—the attacker may be able to authorize a key replacement. Vitalik Buterin recommends choosing guardians with uncorrelated risks rather than relying on people or devices likely to fail or be compromised together. He also discusses reducing public links between guardians. Why we need wide adoption of social recovery wallets

Guardians who cannot respond
A threshold that cannot be reached when recovery is needed can make the account unrecoverable in practice. Choose guardians who are reachable, understand what they are being asked to approve, and can follow the process. The threshold must balance two risks: making authorization hard enough to resist an attacker, but achievable when the owner genuinely needs recovery.
Policy and smart-contract implementation
A recovery policy is only useful if the account implements it correctly and its configuration remains protected. ERC-7093 is a draft rather than a security certification; its security considerations say, “Needs discussion.” The proposal also notes that recovery configuration must be securely stored and access to changes carefully managed. These points do not establish whether any specific wallet has been audited or is secure.
Delays, notices, and cancellation
A delay can give the owner or guardians time to notice a suspicious request before it takes effect. That protection depends on practical details: whether alerts are sent, who receives them, how quickly someone can respond, and whether the implementation lets the owner or guardians cancel a pending request. ERC-7093 includes cancellation functions in its example, but does not require every wallet to use that workflow.

Phishing and key exposure
Social recovery does not make it safe to disclose a seed phrase or private key. Ethereum.org advises never sharing either, including with someone claiming to be support, and recommends reviewing transaction details and avoiding unlimited smart-contract spending approvals. In an ordinary self-custody wallet without a working recovery design, losing the seed phrase or private key can mean losing access permanently; there is no universal reset service. Can a hardware wallet be one of the guardians?
A hardware wallet can be an optional way to keep a guardian key offline; it is not itself a social recovery wallet, and it is not required for social recovery. Ethereum.org recommends hardware wallets for offline private-key storage, and Buterin discusses hardware wallets as one possible guardian arrangement. Check that the device and its software work with the specific account and recovery setup before relying on them. Ethereum security and scam prevention
