The reliable way to answer “Will this indie game run on my PC?” is to compare the game’s complete official requirements with your computer’s exact CPU, GPU and VRAM, system memory, operating system, display target, and free storage. Treat minimum requirements as a launch floor and recommended requirements as a safer performance target, not as an FPS promise. Settings, resolution, drivers, patches, shader compilation, and the game scene can all change the result.
1. Make an accurate inventory of your PC
Before opening a store page, record the hardware and software you actually have. Generic descriptions such as “Intel graphics” or “8 GB of RAM” are not enough: different generations of integrated graphics and processors can perform very differently.

Find the processor and installed memory
- Windows: Open Settings > System > About to see the processor model and installed RAM. Task Manager’s Performance tab also shows the CPU model and current memory use.
- macOS: Open Apple menu > About This Mac. Select System Report for the exact chip or processor and memory configuration.
- Linux: Use your distribution’s system-information panel or hardware utility and record the full CPU model, not just the manufacturer.
Write down the exact model, including a generation or series number. A processor listed only as “Core i5” or “Ryzen 5” cannot be matched reliably to a game’s requirement.
Identify the graphics processor and VRAM
Record every graphics device shown. A laptop may have both an integrated GPU and a discrete GPU, and a game can start on the weaker one if the operating system’s graphics preference is wrong. Note the GPU model and dedicated video memory (VRAM). Integrated graphics often use shared system memory instead of a separate VRAM pool, so compare them with the game’s requirement on the same basis.

- On Windows, Task Manager’s Performance > GPU view shows the model and memory categories. dxdiag can provide a second check.
- On macOS, use About This Mac > System Report > Graphics/Displays.
- On Linux, check the desktop’s hardware-information tool and confirm that the installed graphics driver recognizes the intended GPU.
Record the operating system, resolution, and storage
Write down the operating-system family and version, whether it is 64-bit, your monitor’s native resolution, and the amount of free space on the drive where the game will be installed. A listing may require a particular Windows, macOS, or Linux version, a 64-bit system, or a graphics API. The free-space figure must include room for updates and temporary files; the download size alone is not a safe planning number.
Your display target matters. Rendering at 1080p requires more work than 720p, and a high-refresh display creates a higher frame-rate target than a 30-FPS television-style setup. Record the target you actually intend to use rather than comparing requirements in the abstract.
2. Read the complete store-page requirements
Steam Support advises checking a game’s hardware requirements together with its compatible operating systems on the store page. Open the System Requirements section and capture every line before deciding.

Read notes below the headline requirements as carefully as the table. A game can list the same hardware for two operating systems while actually depending on different drivers or translation layers. A controller requirement, online connection, or first-run shader-compilation step can also affect whether the experience is practical on your machine.
3. Compare by the weakest major component
Do not average your PC’s strengths. A computer can exceed the CPU and RAM targets yet fail the GPU or VRAM target, and the weakest major component becomes the decision gate.

Compare like with like. A dedicated desktop GPU is not directly interchangeable with an integrated laptop GPU simply because both have a similar-looking model label. If any major component is below minimum, classify the game as uncertain rather than assuming another component will compensate.
4. Decide what “runs well” means for you
Set an outcome before you shop. “It launches” is a much lower standard than “it feels smooth.” Choose one of these targets:

- Playable at 30 FPS: suitable for slower games if frame pacing is consistent.
- Playable at 60 FPS: requires more headroom, particularly at 1080p or above.
- Fixed resolution: for example, native 1080p rather than a dynamic or reduced resolution.
- Comfortable play: a practical combination of resolution, image quality, input response, and stable frame times.
Minimum requirements generally indicate that the game can launch under the publisher’s stated conditions. Recommended requirements are the safer starting point for image quality and consistency, but neither tier guarantees a particular FPS. Drivers, patches, graphics settings, resolution, and demanding scenes can all move the result.
5. Check the platform path, not just the hardware
Native Windows, macOS, or Linux builds
A native build normally removes one compatibility layer, but you still need the listed operating-system version, graphics API, and driver support. Confirm that the store page shows the platform icon you plan to use; a Windows requirement does not imply a macOS or Linux build.
Linux and SteamOS through Proton
Linux play can depend on Proton, suitable graphics drivers, and support for the game’s rendering API. Valve’s Proton documentation notes that newer titles may require newer driver support. Check the game’s compatibility information, identify which Proton version is recommended, and verify that your GPU driver is current enough for that path. SteamOS adds another layer: the game’s compatibility entry may identify requirements that are not met and suggest lowering a preset or individual settings.

Do not treat a Windows result as proof of an identical Linux or SteamOS experience. Translation overhead, anti-cheat behavior, video playback, launchers, and driver differences can change both launch success and frame-time stability.
6. Use evidence beyond the requirement table
Requirements are the starting evidence, not a benchmark. Look for recent developer patch notes and reports from hardware close to your own. Give more weight to posts that state the exact CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, operating system, driver, resolution, settings, and game version.
Community reports are clues rather than guarantees. A patch can improve or worsen performance, and a driver update can change shader compilation or rendering behavior. Prefer reports that describe frame-time consistency and the troublesome area of the game instead of quoting only a high average FPS in an easy scene.
7. Test early and measure the right things
If the store’s refund policy makes a test possible, install the game and reach a representative save or demanding area early. Test the same resolution and settings you intend to keep. Walk through a busy level, load a large save, or trigger the effect that appears most expensive; a quiet opening scene is not enough.
Steam’s in-game performance monitor displays frame performance, CPU use, GPU use, system RAM, and video-memory use. Watch the frame-time graph as well as the average FPS. A high average with repeated long spikes feels worse than a lower but steady result.

Change one variable at a time and keep a known-good configuration. That makes it possible to identify which adjustment helped instead of losing track after changing a whole preset.

- Confirm the active GPU. On a laptop, make sure the game is using the intended discrete GPU rather than an integrated adapter.
- Lower resolution or render scale. This is usually the fastest test when the GPU is saturated. Compare the result at the resolution you can accept.
- Reduce shadows, ambient effects, and anti-aliasing. These options can impose substantial rendering work while preserving more texture detail than an across-the-board low preset.
- Lower texture quality when VRAM is the problem. Texture settings often affect memory use more than raw shader workload.
- Reduce simulation-heavy settings. Crowd, physics, view distance, and world-detail options can help when the CPU is the limiting component.
- Set a frame-rate cap. A cap below an unstable peak can reduce spikes and make frame pacing more consistent.
- Retest the same demanding scene. Keep notes on frame time, not just the new average FPS.
On Steam Deck, use the compatibility section’s suggested preset or individual-setting changes as a starting point, then verify the result in the area where you experienced trouble. A lower preset is not automatically the best choice if one expensive option is responsible for the load.
9. Use launch options only as deliberate fallbacks
Steam supports launch options that can alter settings before a game starts, including options intended for older graphics hardware or alternate rendering paths. Use only an option documented for the game or your graphics API, and change one at a time. Keep a known-good configuration so you can remove a launch option that causes a crash, missing effects, or worse performance.
Launch options cannot repair a hardware shortfall. They are useful when the game offers a documented compatibility switch, but they should come after confirming the active GPU, driver, operating system, and in-game settings.

When choosing between games, compare their headroom rather than relying on genre labels such as “2D,” “pixel art,” or “low-end friendly.” A 2D game or low-resolution 3D scene generally demands less GPU work, but the published requirements and observed behavior remain decisive.

The better choice is the game with more margin on your weakest component and a platform path you can support. If both games pass the table, prefer the one with clearer recent fixes and steadier observed frame times.
11. What to do when your PC misses the requirements
First determine whether the miss is marginal or fundamental. A small GPU-load problem may respond to lower resolution and effects. A missing operating-system build, unsupported graphics API, or major CPU shortfall is less likely to be solved by visual settings.
- For a GPU or VRAM shortfall: lower resolution, textures, shadows, anti-aliasing, and effects, then retest.
- For a CPU shortfall: reduce simulation-heavy options, close background work, and use a frame-rate cap.
- For RAM pressure: close browsers and other applications, restart the game, and monitor whether memory use grows over time.
- For OS or driver incompatibility: verify the supported platform and update the graphics driver only when it supports that operating-system path.
- For a laptop choosing the wrong adapter: select the high-performance GPU in the operating system’s graphics settings.
Cloud gaming can be a fallback when local hardware misses the requirements, but check that the game is in the service’s catalog and that your network latency and connection stability are acceptable. Streaming can feel worse than local play even when the remote machine renders the game smoothly.
12. A final decision checklist
- Exact CPU model recorded.
- Exact GPU model and VRAM recorded.
- Installed RAM and free storage recorded.
- Operating-system family, version, and 64-bit status checked.
- Store-page minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, API, and notes captured.
- Weakest major component identified.
- Resolution and frame-rate target chosen.
- Native platform or Proton/SteamOS path verified.
- Recent patches and hardware-specific reports reviewed.
- Representative-area test performed, with frame times and component usage monitored.
Choose the game when your intended platform is supported, your weakest component has reasonable headroom over the target, and a representative test remains smooth after sensible settings changes. If the evidence is mixed, treat it as an experiment rather than a guaranteed purchase: test early, keep one change at a time, and judge comfort by frame-time consistency instead of the launch screen or a single FPS number.
