For Indian sellers, choosing an e-commerce platform that “handles GST” means checking more than checkout tax calculation. The platform or an integrated service must produce the invoice documents your business needs, show the required particulars, number them appropriately, and fit your order, refund, and reporting workflow. Shopify says it does not create a GST-compliant bill for Indian merchants; WooCommerce offers configurable tax and invoice tools, but its automated tax service does not list India. Neither platform’s settings decide your legal tax obligations.
Start with the invoice, not the platform’s tax label
Separate four functions when comparing software: calculating tax at checkout, generating customer documents, exporting transaction records, and filing or remitting tax. A feature for one does not establish that the platform does the others. In particular, checkout tax settings are not a determination of what a seller must charge. WooCommerce explicitly says its tax service does not file returns, remit tax, or determine where a business has a tax obligation (WooCommerce Tax Guide).

Before selecting a platform or add-on, identify the transactions and documents your business actually handles. Then verify sample outputs against the current GST rules and your own circumstances. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) rules cover more than the ordinary tax invoice, and applicability depends on the seller and transaction (CBIC GST invoice rules).
Check whether invoice output covers the required particulars
CBIC’s invoice rules list particulars that include supplier name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive serial number unique for a financial year; issue date; recipient details, including GSTIN or UIN where applicable; and, in specified cases involving unregistered recipients, delivery and state information. They also include HSN code or service accounting code, description, quantity and unit for goods, total value, tax rates and amounts, and place of supply with the state name for inter-state supplies. Treat this as a starting checklist, not a substitute for checking the current rule text and how it applies to your business.
#1 Best Overall
- Two-Part Carbonless Invoice Book: Each invoice book has 50 sets of invoices, each with a white/light yellow section, with the yellow section retained in the invoice book to maintain detailed records.
- Consecutively Numbered: Enlarged red 6-digit numbers in the upper right corner of each invoice receipt book help you quickly navigate through your orders.
- Wraparound Divider Flap: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each invoice book for use between each two-part sales order to prevent the written content from rubbing off on subsequent copies of the invoice, resulting in wasted invoices.
- 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): Each invoice book provides 50 sequentially numbered carbonless sets of 2 invoice books for long-term use.
- Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.
- Fields: Confirm that the generated document can show the supplier, recipient, product or service, transaction, tax, and place-of-supply details relevant to the order.
- Numbering: Check how invoice series are assigned and whether the numbering can meet the applicable financial-year and serial-number requirements.
- Document types: If your business uses them, test bills of supply, receipt vouchers, revised invoices, credit notes, and debit notes as well as tax invoices.
- E-invoicing: Some classes of registered persons must follow notified e-invoice procedures. Check current official rules for your applicability; do not infer it from a platform’s checkout tax setting.
The rule text and document cases are set out by CBIC. A customizable template is useful only if it can produce the particulars and document flows your business needs.
What Shopify and WooCommerce document for Indian sellers
| Platform | Documented capability or limitation | What the seller still needs to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Shopify’s India GST FAQ, marked updated September 22, 2025, says it does not create a GST-compliant bill and recommends a local third-party GST invoicing service or an app from its App Store (Shopify India GST FAQ). | Whether the chosen service produces the required fields and document types, handles invoice numbering, and renders tax components correctly for the seller’s transactions. |
| WooCommerce | WooCommerce documents configurable tax settings and invoice extensions. Its automated WooCommerce Tax calculation service lists supported countries that exclude India (WooCommerce Tax Guide; PDF invoices documentation). | How the store’s tax settings and selected invoice extension are configured, and whether their output meets the seller’s current Indian GST requirements. |
Shopify: plan for an invoicing integration
Shopify states directly: “No. Shopify doesn’t create a GST-compliant bill.” Its guidance points Indian merchants to a local third-party GST invoicing service or a Shopify App Store app (Shopify India GST FAQ). That makes the integration—not simply Shopify’s tax setting—the item to assess for invoice compliance.

The same FAQ says GST amounts depend on merchant location and products. It describes intra-state sales as involving CGST and SGST, and out-of-state sales as involving IGST. Shopify also says it cannot set multiple tax line items, although its setup can charge the combined CGST and SGST amount for intra-state goods sales. Test the connected invoice service to confirm how it displays the needed components and other particulars for your orders. Consult a local tax expert if you are unsure about registration or applicable rates.
WooCommerce: configurable tools still require setup
WooCommerce’s tax documentation describes rate setup and calculation, not the legal decision about when or what to charge. The listed countries for automated WooCommerce Tax calculations do not include India, and the service does not file returns or remit tax (WooCommerce Tax Guide).

WooCommerce documents PDF invoice extensions and says the invoice format should be configured in line with local tax-office requirements. Its invoice display documentation says taxes appear according to WooCommerce tax settings (PDF invoices documentation; Invoice setup documentation). These are configurable features, not evidence that a default installation or a particular extension automatically meets every Indian GST requirement.
Compare platforms and integrations against your workflow
- List your document needs. Identify whether you need tax invoices, bills of supply, credit or debit notes, receipt vouchers, revised invoices, or an applicable e-invoice process. Check current CBIC rules for which documents apply to your business (CBIC GST invoice rules).
- Inspect the actual invoice output. Generate sample documents and check the supplier and recipient fields, HSN or service code, tax details, place of supply, and numbering—not merely whether the app describes itself as GST-ready.
- Validate tax configuration with your transactions. Use product classifications and customer locations relevant to your store. Consider intra-state and inter-state deliveries, tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive prices as applicable, shipping, discounts, and returns. The platform can calculate only from its configured settings; it does not settle the correct tax treatment for you.
- Check records across channels. Confirm that orders, refunds, discounts, and exports can be reconciled for accounting and return preparation. Marketplace sales can have a separate reporting context from orders on your own storefront.
- Assign responsibility for maintenance. Establish who updates tax settings and invoice formats when requirements change, how you will obtain support, and how sample records will be retained and checked.
WooCommerce recommends testing with a known customer address and an expected rate approved for that address, while cautioning that its guidance checks software configuration rather than deciding which tax must be charged (WooCommerce tax troubleshooting). Use the same principle with any platform or integration: test expected results supplied by someone qualified to determine your treatment, then inspect the software’s output.

Account for marketplace reporting separately
If you sell through an ecommerce marketplace as well as your own store, do not assume that one storefront invoice workflow covers the marketplace channel. The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 guide discusses reporting supplies made through ecommerce operators where the operator is liable to collect tax under section 52 or pay tax under section 9(5). Check the reporting treatment for that channel separately from the customer-invoice workflow (GST Portal GSTR-1 user guide).

A hosted platform may reduce infrastructure work while still requiring an invoicing integration, as Shopify’s own guidance illustrates. A configurable self-hosted option such as WooCommerce can offer control through settings and extensions, but the seller must set up and verify the local tax and invoice workflow. These are trade-offs in setup and responsibility, not a universal ranking.
