Build the demo around a small, low-energy RC car on a private course with controlled access—not a road vehicle and not a public-road test. Define the course, speed limit, allowed maneuvers, people permitted nearby, and stop conditions before enabling autonomy. Then progress from simulation and manual checks to increasingly autonomous modes, with an attentive person able to intervene throughout. A closed course reduces exposure to hazards; it does not prove the car or its software is safe.
1. Choose a small platform and confirm what it includes
A Donkeycar-compatible RC car is one practical option for an educational demonstration. Donkeycar describes an open-source small-scale self-driving platform with neural-network, computer-vision, and GPS approaches. Its hardware documentation includes a PiRacer Pro build path, and its installation guide discusses Raspberry Pi and Jetson Nano options. These are platform examples, not a safety certification or a guarantee that every combination of hardware and software is compatible.

Before choosing a kit or assembling parts, confirm the current revision and the exact components you will use:
- Vehicle chassis, steering servo, and motor controller.
- Onboard computer, camera, and any additional sensors needed for the demo.
- Battery, power distribution, and how the vehicle responds if power or communication is interrupted.
- Controller and software interfaces, including the control mode and stop command.
Check the current Donkeycar hardware build and installation documentation for the configuration you plan to use. Kit contents and compatibility can change. Do not describe a kit as safety-certified unless its manufacturer provides evidence for that specific claim.

2. Define the operating domain before you run the car
Write down exactly where and under what conditions the system may operate. A vague instruction such as “stay on the track” is not enough to guide a safe test or a reliable abort decision.
- Course: Mark the driving boundary and identify nearby hazards. Use a private area where access can be controlled, and keep the course physically separated from public traffic and uninvolved people.
- Surface and layout: Specify the surface, course shape, permitted turns, and where the car is allowed to stop. Start with a simple, visible layout and avoid obstacles that could send the car into a person or a hazard.
- Speed: Set a conservative maximum before the run. There is no universal speed that makes an autonomous demo safe: use the lowest speed at which the vehicle can perform the learning objective, and keep it slow enough that the operator can intervene before it reaches the course boundary. Verify the actual limit in manual testing rather than relying on a software setting alone.
- Conditions: Record the lighting and surface conditions in which the test is allowed. If weather could affect traction, visibility, or the equipment, specify acceptable conditions and stop if they change beyond those limits.
- People and objects: Name who may enter the area, where the operator and observer stand, and which stationary target objects—if any—the car is expected to detect. Keep spectators outside the run area, behind a barrier where possible. Do not add pedestrians, public traffic, or uncontrolled moving vehicles to an initial demo.
FAA guidance on autonomous ground vehicles at airports identifies controlled, less-congested, low-speed environments as preferable in that airport context. Treat this as a general site-selection principle, not permission to use airport property or a rule for every venue.

3. Progress through autonomy in stages
Do not jump from assembling the car to a fully autonomous run. The UK Department for Transport’s automated-vehicle trialling code describes staged testing from bench checks and simulation toward closed-track or private-road trials. For a small RC demonstration, use the same gradual logic and do not advance until the current stage is repeatable.

- Check software and simulation. Confirm the intended software and configuration, exercise the control logic without live vehicle motion where possible, and record the configuration you will test. A simulation result is a development check, not evidence that the physical car will behave identically.
- Inspect and drive manually. Check the vehicle, steering, tires, camera or sensors, battery, and controller. At the lowest usable speed, confirm that left and right commands produce the expected movement and that throttle response is predictable.
- Verify limits and stop behavior. Confirm that the throttle cap, communication link, and stop command behave as intended at low speed. Test the stop control in the actual configuration, including how the vehicle behaves after drive is removed. Record the result before proceeding.
- Evaluate perception and control under direct human control. Check that the camera or other sensors work under the intended lighting and that the system’s outputs are plausible. Keep a person in direct control of vehicle movement while evaluating them.
- Try restricted autonomy. If the platform supports it, enable autonomous steering while keeping throttle manual. Donkeycar’s path-following guidance recommends manual throttle as an initial way to follow waypoints: the operator can release throttle while assessing steering behavior.
- Consider autonomous steering and throttle only after repeatable results. Advance only if earlier behavior, stop response, and course containment are consistent. Use a short, simple run and keep the intervention operator focused on the vehicle.
Donkeycar documentation describes manual, autosteering, and autopilot modes, but the labels and behavior depend on the particular setup. A controller button assigned to an emergency-stop function is a feature to test; its presence does not establish that the stop is independent, safety-rated, or effective under every failure.

| Mode | What controls the car | Appropriate use |
|---|---|---|
| Manual | The operator controls steering and throttle. | Initial inspection, low-speed behavior checks, and establishing a baseline run. |
| Autosteering with manual throttle | The software controls steering; the operator controls throttle. | A restricted first path-following test when the operator needs to be able to release throttle while assessing steering. |
| Autopilot or equivalent | The software controls steering and throttle, subject to the configured system. | Only after the preceding stages are repeatable and stop criteria, supervision, and fallback behavior are in place. |
4. Assign roles and agree on what happens if something goes wrong
Designate one person for each live run whose sole responsibility is monitoring the vehicle and course and intervening immediately. Do not make that person present the demo, troubleshoot a laptop, or watch a screen while also responsible for stopping the car. A second person can manage the demonstration interface, logs, or spectators.
Before starting, agree on a simple fallback: stop the vehicle, remove the drive command, and secure it before anyone approaches. For a small course, a complete stop within the course may be the practical minimal-risk condition. Test how the car behaves after a stop command and when communication is lost. Check for unexpected throttle or steering after communication, software, sensor, or controller failures; do not claim the system handles a failure safely until that behavior has actually been tested.

Transport Canada’s guidelines for automated-driving-system testing identify distraction, fatigue, and automation bias as safety concerns. The UK trialling code also discusses supervision, safety-driver capability, redundancy, warnings, and fallback arrangements. The specific legal requirements in those documents depend on their jurisdiction and scope; the practical point for this demo is to keep the intervention role attentive and the response plan clear.
5. Set stop criteria and record each run
Agree on abort conditions before enabling the car. Stop a run if any of the following occurs:

- Unexpected acceleration or steering, or behavior that differs from the established baseline.
- A stop command is missed or delayed, or the operator cannot intervene as expected.
- Loss of control, localization, or communication; a blocked or disconnected sensor; or a software fault.
- The vehicle approaches the course boundary or enters an area it is not permitted to use.
- A person or animal enters the course, or another condition changes so the operating limits no longer hold.
These are practical demo criteria, not a universal regulatory checklist. After an abort, secure the vehicle, record what happened, and review the cause and controls before deciding whether a run can resume. Do not restart merely because the fault appears to have cleared.
For each run, record:
- Date and time, objective, outcome, and any intervention or stop event.
- Vehicle and battery configuration, software and model versions, and relevant settings.
- Course layout, surface, lighting, and other conditions relevant to the run.
- Any change from the previous run and why it was made.
Documented testing and risk management are emphasized in the UK trialling code and in NHTSA’s voluntary guidance, Automated Driving Systems 2.0: A Vision for Safety. If you show results publicly, distinguish a successful demonstration run from a validated safety claim.
6. Keep the demo separate from road-vehicle claims and legal approvals
A small RC demonstration does not establish that a full-size vehicle is roadworthy, that its automation is safe on public roads, or that it complies with a vehicle standard. NHTSA’s automated-vehicle safety material distinguishes driver assistance from driving automation; do not use “self-driving” in a way that obscures what the model actually controls.

The UK Department for Transport’s automated-vehicle trialling code concerns trials on public roads and other public places in the UK; its page reports an update on 24 June 2026. Separate UK guidance covers a self-driving-vehicle pilot scheme for roads in Great Britain, with applicant information published 31 March 2026. Those provisions should not be generalized to a private hobby course or another country. Transport Canada’s testing guidelines are likewise jurisdiction-specific. Its stated scope excludes vehicle design and on-road testing. It is a paid standard, and its public listing does not provide the complete text; it should not be presented as a universal legal requirement or as certification of an RC car.
