How to Claim GST Input Tax Credit on E-Commerce Purchases for Your Business

Yes—if you are registered under India’s GST, you may claim input tax credit (ITC) on an online purchase when it is eligible for business use and you meet the statutory conditions. Buying through a marketplace does not itself make GST creditable: you need the right supplier-issued tax document, a supplier-reported record, and compliance with restrictions and return requirements.

When an online purchase qualifies for ITC

Section 16 of India’s Central Goods and Services Tax Act allows a registered person to take credit for input tax on goods or services used, or intended to be used, in the course or furtherance of business, subject to conditions and restrictions. The channel—marketplace, seller website, or another online platform—is not the deciding factor. The nature and use of the purchase, the supporting document, supplier reporting, and your return compliance are.

For the general rule and its conditions, see the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, Section 16. A tax amount shown on a checkout page or marketplace order confirmation is not, by itself, proof that you can claim ITC.

How to check and claim credit

  1. Confirm registration and business use. The claimant must be a GST-registered person, and the purchase must be used or intended for business. If it is partly personal or relates partly to exempt supplies, do not claim the full tax amount; apportion the credit to the eligible use under the applicable rules.
  2. Obtain the supplier’s tax invoice or prescribed document. Keep the supplier-issued GST invoice or other prescribed tax-paying document—not just the platform’s order confirmation. Check the supplier and recipient details, invoice number and date, description, taxable value, GST rate and amount, and your GSTIN where required. See the Act’s document conditions and the CGST Rules, including invoice and ITC rules.
  3. Reconcile the invoice with supplier-reported information. Check the recipient-side invoice information on the GST portal, commonly GSTR-2B. If the invoice is missing or incorrect, contact the seller and have the record corrected before claiming. Do not assume a marketplace receipt substitutes for supplier reporting or a valid invoice.
  4. Screen for blocked or restricted credit. Apply the restrictions in Section 17, including the statutory exceptions. Categories that can be blocked include specified motor vehicles, food and beverages, club or fitness membership, certain insurance and rent-a-cab services, travel benefits, and certain construction costs. The outcome depends on the exact item, use, and any applicable exception; the category name alone does not settle eligibility. See Section 17 of the Act.
  5. Claim through the applicable return process and retain records. Include eligible credit in the relevant GST return process and maintain the invoice and accounting records showing input tax and ITC claimed. The statute requires records of input tax and credit claimed; see the CGST Act. Exact portal screens and return-table references can change, so use current official GST portal instructions for the tax period rather than relying on an outdated click path.

Check these situations before claiming

Purchase from a composition taxpayer

ITC is not available on a purchase from a composition taxable person because that supplier cannot charge GST on the supply. CBIC addresses this in its GST FAQs.

Business and personal use, or exempt supplies

Credit must be restricted to the eligible business-use portion when a purchase also serves personal or non-business purposes, or is attributable to exempt supplies. Do not treat the entire invoice tax as creditable just because the business placed the order.

Capital goods and depreciation

If you claim income-tax depreciation on the GST component of capital goods, Section 16 bars ITC on that same tax component. Check how the asset and depreciation are recorded before claiming.

An overseas purchase may involve import documentation or reverse-charge rules that differ from a domestic marketplace purchase. The general domestic workflow above is not a complete import procedure; have the transaction assessed before claiming.

Returns, cancellations, and price adjustments

If goods are returned or the price or tax is adjusted, the supplier may issue a credit note. Account for any related ITC adjustment under the rules applicable to that transaction. The invoice rules are set out in the CGST Rules.

Payment and deadline checks

If you have availed ITC but do not pay the supplier the value of the supply plus tax within 180 days from the invoice date, the statutory consequence is to add the credit to output tax liability with interest under the prescribed process. You may re-avail the credit after paying the supplier. The 180-day period comes from the proviso to Section 16(2) of the CGST Act.

Section 16 also sets a general time limit linked to the due date for the September return following the financial year or the date the relevant annual return is furnished, whichever is earlier. Amendments and special provisions can affect the applicable deadline, so confirm the consolidated law for the relevant financial year before filing.

Why an online invoice may be missing from GSTR-2B

A missing or mismatched entry means you should reconcile the supplier’s invoice against the GST portal information and contact the seller to correct its records. Do not create or alter a record yourself, and do not rely on the marketplace order page as a substitute. Keep the invoice and correspondence with your purchase records, then assess the claim against the current statutory conditions and return guidance.

What to keep with the purchase record

  • The supplier-issued tax invoice or other prescribed document.
  • Evidence of the purchase and its business purpose, including any records needed to support apportionment for mixed use.
  • The result of reconciling the invoice with recipient-side supplier-reported information.
  • Accounting records showing the input tax and ITC claimed, plus payment records relevant to the 180-day condition.
  • Any supplier credit note or other adjustment document if the order is returned or its price or tax changes.

This is general information about Indian GST, not individualized tax advice. A GST practitioner should assess unusual, high-value, mixed-use, exempt-supply, import, or reverse-charge transactions.
