Choose an Android note-taking app by matching it to how you capture, organize, and revisit information—not by looking for one universal winner. For structured school or work notebooks, start with OneNote; for local files and offline access, consider Obsidian; for connected pages and shared databases, consider Notion; and for handwriting on compatible Galaxy hardware, look at Samsung Notes. If cross-platform notebook features and offline editing matter, Zoho Notebook is another option to evaluate.
Start with the way you take notes
Before comparing feature lists, decide what your notes need to do. A short shopping list, a semester of lecture notes, a collection of linked research, and handwritten tablet pages are different workloads. The best fit depends on capture methods, organization, offline needs, the devices you use beyond Android, and how you want to manage your data.

- Capture: Do you mainly type, or do you need audio, web content, photos, handwriting, or a home-screen shortcut?
- Organization: Would you rather keep quick notes and lists, arrange material in notebooks and sections, link pages, or build databases?
- Offline access: Do you need the whole collection available locally, or can you prepare selected pages before going offline?
- Sync: Does the app need to connect with your existing Microsoft or other account, or would you rather choose how files sync?
- Data management: Consider where notes are stored and what backup or moving-to-another-app process you need. The available information confirms local vault storage for Obsidian, but does not establish comparable export behavior for every app here.
- Handwriting: Check that your particular phone or tablet and stylus work with the app’s handwriting features; convenience depends on compatible hardware.

Choose OneNote for structured school or work notebooks
OneNote is a sensible starting point if you want notebooks and sections and already work with a Microsoft account. Microsoft’s Android documentation lists search, audio notes, widgets, formatting, and the ability to share web content and files into OneNote. Microsoft says notes sync automatically with OneDrive as you move between notes and sections, and the app also provides a manual “Sync all” option. This organization suits material you want to group into larger notebooks rather than treat as a web of connected pages. Check that the Android features you rely on are available in your routine: Microsoft’s documentation describes the app’s capabilities, but your choice should also account for the desktop, browser, or tablet access you need.

Choose Obsidian for local notes and offline access
Obsidian stores notes in a local vault, so they remain available offline. That makes it worth evaluating if local files and control over synchronization matter more to you than a workspace managed entirely through an online service. Obsidian Sync is the first-party, multi-platform sync option; alternative approaches can involve extra setup and mobile-specific caveats. Obsidian explains its Android storage options and sync choices.
Understand Android storage before choosing
Obsidian distinguishes device storage, which other apps and sync tools can access, from app storage, which is more isolated. If you keep a vault in app storage, uninstalling Obsidian deletes those local notes. Choose a storage location with your intended sync and backup approach in mind.

Keep a backup separate from sync
Sync keeps copies aligned across devices; it is not a substitute for a separate backup. Obsidian explicitly recommends maintaining one. Its backup guide describes the distinction and options.

Consider the cost of official sync
Obsidian’s pricing page listed the core app as “Free without limits” and Sync at $4 USD per user per month billed annually or $5 billed monthly when checked on October 4, 2026. These are the listed prices on that date, not a guarantee of current or future pricing; check the Obsidian pricing page before deciding.

Choose Notion for connected pages and shared workspaces
Notion is a candidate when your notes belong in connected pages, a shared workspace, or databases. Plan for offline use rather than assuming every page will be available without a connection: the mobile app lets any plan download individual pages, one at a time. Paid plans automatically download recent and favorite pages, but subpages are not automatically downloaded with a parent. See Notion’s offline-use guidance.
If you expect to work without a connection, download the specific pages you will need and check that their contents are available before leaving coverage. The parent-page behavior matters if your material is organized into nested pages.

Choose Samsung Notes for handwriting on compatible Galaxy devices
If writing by hand is central to your workflow and you own compatible Galaxy hardware, Samsung Notes is worth considering. Samsung documents a handwriting mode and sync with Microsoft OneNote. It also describes Galaxy AI tools on select devices; do not assume those tools are available on every Galaxy model, in every region, or on every Android tablet. Confirm the features for your exact device in Samsung’s Notes documentation.

Zoho Notebook’s Google Play description says notes can be created, edited, and read offline, then synced when the device reconnects, across the platforms listed there. Treat this as the developer’s feature description rather than independent confirmation of reliability. If those capabilities are important, check the current listing and try your own devices and connection conditions before relying on it for essential notes: Zoho Notebook on Google Play.

Make the choice with a short workflow check
- List your essential capture methods. Separate must-haves—such as handwriting, audio, or sharing files—from conveniences like widgets.
- Map your organization. Pick the structure that matches your existing habits: notebooks and sections, local files, connected pages, or handwritten notebooks.
- Name every device you need to use. Verify that the Android app’s sync and access options cover your phone, tablet, computer, and browser needs.
- Test your offline case. For Obsidian, verify the vault is available where you expect it. For Notion, download the needed pages individually or confirm paid-plan automatic downloads cover them. For Zoho Notebook, treat offline editing and later sync as a developer claim to validate in your own use.
- Decide how you will recover notes. Identify the storage location, sync method, and a backup separate from sync before putting important information in the app.
- Check device compatibility and current terms. This is especially important for Samsung handwriting features and for any changing plan prices or offline features.
