A flat-rate plan uses one unit price at all times; a time-of-use plan has different prices for specified periods. Your PC’s power-supply rating is not its measured energy use, and a tariff’s “fixed” or “variable” label alone does not tell you whether its rates change by time of day.
What you need to calculate the cost
Use your own electricity bill or tariff information for the relevant region and payment method. Gather:

- Your unit rate in pence, cents or another local currency unit per kWh.
- Your tariff type: one rate throughout the day, or separate time bands such as peak and off-peak.
- Your typical gaming hours over the billing period.
- Either the setup’s measured energy use in kWh, or a measured average power draw in watts.
Electricity is billed by energy, measured in kWh. A PC power supply’s wattage rating describes its capacity, not how much electricity the computer actually draws while gaming. IEC 62623:2022 sets out procedures for measuring computer energy use across power modes; a practical household estimate can instead use a plug-in electricity meter to record cumulative kWh over representative use. Use a cumulative kWh reading when possible
Connect the PC through a plug-in electricity usage meter, or use a compatible energy-monitoring smart plug, and record the kWh over a representative period. Multiply that reading by the applicable unit rate. A meter records only the devices connected through it: if you want the cost for the full gaming setup, include the monitor and peripherals too, or measure them separately. Check that any meter or smart plug is compatible with your local plug type and electrical ratings. Australian Government guidance on appliances

Calculate from average watts and hours
If you know the average power draw during gaming, calculate energy as:
Energy (kWh) = average power (W) ÷ 1,000 × hours used

Then calculate the usage charge:
Usage cost = energy (kWh) × applicable unit rate
For example, suppose a measured gaming setup averages 400 W while in use, runs for 3 hours per day over 30 days, and the unit rate is 26.32 pence/kWh. The assumed energy is 400 ÷ 1,000 × 3 × 30 = 36 kWh. At that rate, usage costs 36 × 26.32 = 947.52 pence, or £9.48 after converting pence to pounds. These are illustrative assumptions, not a typical gaming-PC measurement.

Compare a flat-rate plan with time-of-use pricing
A single- or flat-rate tariff applies the same unit price regardless of when electricity is used. A time-of-use or multi-rate tariff applies different prices during defined periods. Terms vary by country, so check the plan’s actual rate schedule and time bands rather than relying on the tariff name. Australian Government guidance on electricity pricing plans and tariffs
For a fair comparison, keep the gaming schedule and total energy use constant, then price the kWh in each time band separately:

- AUTOMATICALLY ALARM: When your power supply test value is normal range, the Power Supply Tester would issue a buzzer alarm, Easy to Know.
- WITH LED DISPLAY: We have developed a portable computer power tester for the power supply market that can judge the quality of the power supply. It has LCD display intuitive and accurate display voltage (+/ 0.01V), automatic fault alarm, complete test interface, small and beautiful appearance, and more test functions. It is your best choice and helper to quickly detect PC power.
- EASY TO USE: This power tester only needs to be connected to the power supply ATX connector to easily and intuitively know whether the output of each power supply is normal. It can detect ATX, BTX, ITX, TFX computer power supply, and can display various voltage and PG values in LCD screen to quickly detect the performance of computer power supply.
- PRACTICAL & CONVENIENCE: Small and practical power tester. Now the number of power output groups is increasing. As long as one of them has problem, the hardware of the computer system may work abnormally or even burn out. To measure whether the output voltage output of the power supply is stable, the player usually uses a multimeter. But for the average user is still a little troublesome.
- NOTE: It can also measure the output wire P4/P6/P8/SATA/IDE, and the external DIE/SATA/P6/P8 is the light display, there is no LCD voltage. There is LCD voltage display only when connecting to the 24pin or 20pin.
Time-of-use usage cost = (peak-period kWh × peak rate) + (off-peak kWh × off-peak rate) + any other period charges
Compare that total with the same kWh multiplied by the flat unit rate. Use the plan’s actual hours and rates. A low off-peak price helps only for energy used during the off-peak period; a higher peak price may offset it if you game then. Australian Government tariff guidance

Keep standing charges separate
A standing charge is a daily amount for the electricity connection, separate from the price of energy used. Include it when comparing total household bills for the same number of days, but do not count an existing standing charge as a cost caused by gaming. For a household-level comparison, calculate usage charges first, then add each plan’s daily standing charge multiplied by the billing-period days. Ofgem’s explanation of price caps and standing charges
UK rate illustration for 1 October–31 December 2026
For context, Ofgem’s published average for Direct Debit electricity in England, Scotland and Wales for 1 October to 31 December 2026 is 26.32 pence/kWh, with a standing charge of 54.83 pence per day. These are averages for the specified geography, payment method and price-cap period—not a quote for a particular home or a measurement of PC consumption. Use the rates on your own bill or Ofgem’s regional table for a personal calculation. Rates vary by region, payment method and meter. Ofgem unit rates and standing charges
Ofgem’s price cap limits unit and standing-charge rates on standard variable or default tariffs; it does not cap a customer’s total bill. A customer who agreed a fixed tariff is not protected by that cap. The more energy a household uses, the higher its bill will be. Ofgem price-cap and standing-charge explanation
Quick Recap
Make the comparison specific to your home
- Use the same measured kWh and gaming schedule for both plans.
- Apply the actual unit rate for each relevant period, not a headline low rate that does not match your use.
- Compare standing charges separately if you are estimating the whole household bill.
- Check the region, payment method and meter conditions attached to each rate.
- Distinguish price stability from time bands: “fixed” and “standard variable” describe how prices may change, not whether usage is priced differently by time of day.
