Choose an office air purifier by matching its smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) to the area it must serve, then check whether its filters address the pollutants you care about, whether staff can tolerate the noise, and what replacement filters cost. CADR measures particle-cleaning performance—not gas or odor removal—and a portable unit serves a room or area rather than replacing building ventilation or an HVAC assessment.
Start with the area the purifier must serve
Measure the office or clearly defined zone where the cleaner will operate. In an open-plan office, count the whole connected area the unit is expected to serve, not just the footprint around the device. Ceiling height matters too: the EPA’s illustrative minimum CADR estimates below assume an 8-foot ceiling. The agency advises choosing a larger-rated unit when ceilings are higher.

These are EPA estimates from its Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home, not a guarantee of the air changes a particular office will achieve. If the space is larger than one unit can reasonably serve, consider multiple units. Compare the cleaner’s smoke CADR with the area and the manufacturer’s room-coverage claim; do not treat a coverage number as a substitute for checking CADR.

CADR is usually rated at the cleaner’s highest speed. For small particles, compare the smoke CADR: smoke represents smaller particles than the dust and pollen categories in the rating system described by the EPA. Higher fan speeds and longer operating times generally move more filtered air, but a high maximum CADR is useful only if the office can live with the noise at the setting needed.

For wildfire-smoke planning, EPA gives separate guidance of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet as smoke CADR. That is specific cleaner-air-room guidance; it is not the same as the agency’s illustrative general sizing table above.
Match the filter to the problem
Decide whether the goal is reducing airborne particles, gases and odors, or both. A HEPA filter is one common way a portable cleaner achieves high particle CADR, but the HEPA label alone does not establish how large a space the unit can serve. Check the actual CADR and filter specifications.

- Particles: Compare smoke CADR and the particle-filter specification. Particle ratings do not show how well a unit removes gases.
- Gases or odors: Look for activated carbon or another absorbent filter designed for gases. The EPA notes that there is no widely used performance-rating system for portable gas-removal filters; carbon can be effective when a substantial amount of media is present.
- More than one concern: Verify that the product has suitable media for each target. A carbon layer mentioned in marketing is not, by itself, proof of gas-removal performance.
No air cleaner or filter removes every pollutant. Do not read a particle CADR as evidence that a cleaner removes all gases, or broad claims of “clean air” as proof that every indoor contaminant is addressed. See the EPA’s air-cleaner guidance for the limits of portable filtration.

Check emissions and certification information
Avoid ozone-generating air cleaners in occupied office spaces. The EPA states: “Available scientific evidence shows that at concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone has little potential to remove indoor air contaminants.” Some air-cleaner technologies also have ozone-emission considerations, so check product emissions information and relevant listings, such as CARB or AHAM listings, where applicable.

Certification is useful evidence, but read what it actually covers. ENERGY STAR’s room-air-cleaner criteria include measured ozone reporting and specify an ozone limit for models subject to the referenced UL requirements; that does not mean every air cleaner emits zero ozone. ENERGY STAR’s current room-air-cleaner specification took effect October 9, 2025. It evaluates efficiency using Integrated Energy Factor, a CADR-to-watt measure, and says its label is not an EPA endorsement of claims that a particular model will produce healthier indoor air.
Compare noise, energy use, and filter costs
Check the sound level at the fan speed staff are likely to use during working hours, not only at the quietest or loudest setting. The EPA notes that noise can lead users to switch a cleaner off. A device with a high maximum CADR may deliver less practical benefit if its effective setting is too disruptive for the room.

For operating cost, review energy-efficiency information and find the exact replacement-filter model before buying. Filters need replacement, and availability and price can change the cost of keeping the unit in service. Confirm that the filter is compatible with the specific purifier model rather than relying on a similar-looking filter listing.
Place the unit for usable airflow
Choose a location that does not block the cleaner’s intake or outlet. Follow the manufacturer’s placement instructions and leave clearance around the unit; ENERGY STAR advises avoiding curtains and other obstructions. Check that the footprint and cord placement work in the office without putting the device where furniture, partitions, or routine traffic impede airflow.

Consider central HVAC separately
A portable purifier serves a room or area. Central HVAC filtration is a building-system decision: the EPA recommends MERV 13 or the highest rating the system’s fan and filter slot can accommodate. Ask facilities staff or an HVAC professional to assess compatibility before upgrading the building filter. A portable unit does not replace ventilation or a building filtration assessment.
