There is no reliable universal winner: the right choice depends on output quality, cost, speed, limits, controls, and whether you need a consumer app or an API.
Start with the output you need
Write down what the system must take in and produce. These are distinct capabilities, not interchangeable labels: a model that can understand an image does not necessarily create or edit images, and a text model is not automatically a video generator. Check the provider’s current documentation for the exact input and output types before comparing models.

- Text drafting or analysis: The model receives text and returns text.
- Image understanding: The model receives an image, often alongside a question or instructions, and returns an interpretation in text.
- Image generation or editing: The system creates an image from instructions, modifies an existing image, or both. Verify the supported workflow and API route.
- Video generation: The system produces video. Confirm that the specific model and access route support video output; do not infer this from a provider’s general-purpose model family.
Some workflows combine tasks—for example, analyzing an image and then writing a description. Decide whether one model must handle every step or whether separate models are acceptable.
Decide whether you need an app or an API
A consumer-facing application and an API are different ways to access AI capabilities. An app may package model access with a user interface and product-specific limits; an API lets software send requests to a model ID under API billing and documented limits. A model’s presence in a provider catalog does not establish that it is available in every app, region, or account tier.

Before shortlisting, verify that the exact product surface you plan to use supports the model, task, and features you need. If you are integrating an API, check the current model ID, supported inputs and outputs, context and output limits, pricing unit, and lifecycle status. For an app, check its current feature and usage limits directly; API token prices are not a like-for-like comparison with a subscription.
Shortlist by documented capability, not reputation
Use official catalogs to find candidates that explicitly support the required task. Provider descriptions can help narrow the field, but they are not independent head-to-head test results.

Text models
For API text work, OpenAI’s catalog currently characterizes GPT-6 Astra as suited to demanding work, GPT-6.1 Sol as balancing intelligence and cost, and GPT-6 Luna as aimed at cost-sensitive, high-volume workloads. These are OpenAI’s descriptions, not an independent ranking; check the current OpenAI model catalog for IDs, limits, and prices.
Anthropic’s platform catalog presents Claude Opus 5.5 for general workloads, Claude Fable 5.1 for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work, Claude Sonnet 5.5 for a speed-and-intelligence combination, and Claude Haiku 5.5 for latency-sensitive, high-volume tasks. The catalog documents these models as accepting text and image inputs and returning text. That does not make them image or video generators. Confirm current details in Anthropic’s model overview.

Image models and workflows
OpenAI’s API catalog describes GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst as its most capable image-generation and editing model, and GPT-Image-2.5 Flare as a faster option for everyday image generation. OpenAI’s image documentation explains that GPT Image models can take text and image inputs to create new images or edit existing ones, and distinguishes image analysis from image generation. Treat the model descriptions as provider characterizations, and verify the current model and route in the OpenAI model catalog and OpenAI images and vision guide.
Video models
The official catalogs covered here do not establish a current cross-provider video-model ranking or a complete, comparable shortlist of video products, prices, controls, and availability. Do not select a video model based on a general text or image capability claim. Check the provider’s current documentation for explicit video generation support and the conditions that matter to your workflow.

Compare candidates with the same real tasks
Once you have a shortlist, test each candidate with identical prompts or inputs that represent the work you will actually do. OpenAI’s model-selection guide recommends experimenting with the same inputs and keeping the lightest setting that meets your quality bar. The point is to evaluate your requirements, not to treat a vendor’s “best” label as an independent comparison.

- Choose representative cases. Include routine work and difficult examples: ambiguous instructions, long inputs, edge cases, or the kinds of visual details that matter to your project.
- Set a quality bar before testing. Decide what counts as acceptable—such as factual accuracy and instruction-following for text, or style, consistency, and edit accuracy for images. For video, define the visual and production requirements you need the output to meet.
- Run the same inputs through each candidate. Keep prompts, source files, and evaluation criteria consistent. Record failures and retries as well as strong outputs.
- Score what matters to the job. Weight quality dimensions according to the consequences of failure. A low-cost option may be unsuitable if errors require substantial human correction.
- Keep the least costly and fastest option that clears the bar. Use a more capable or more expensive option only where the task requires it.
There is no independent comparative benchmark in the sources cited here, so the method above is a decision process—not a claim that one listed provider performs better than another.
Compare the full workload, not a single advertised price
Check current prices and billing units in the provider’s catalog, then estimate cost at your expected volume. API token rates do not directly compare with consumer subscriptions, and a headline rate is not an all-in forecast for your workload.
- Estimate realistic usage: Include typical input and output sizes, the number of requests, and expected retries or corrections.
- Include quality-related effort: A model that costs less per request can cost more overall if its outputs need more review or regeneration.
- Consider latency: Check vendor guidance or measure response times on the actual route and workload. The sources cited here do not provide a cross-provider latency benchmark.
- Check limits and controls: Review context and output limits, supported input formats, editing controls, and any production controls required for the workflow.
- Review privacy and governance: Read the terms and organization settings for the specific product you will use. The sources cited here do not compare provider privacy or data-retention terms.
Verify version, availability, and lifecycle before committing
Model names, IDs, access, prices, and lifecycle status can change. Google’s Gemini API model catalog distinguishes stable, preview, latest, and experimental versions; it notes that preview models may have tighter rate limits and shorter deprecation notice periods, and marks some catalog entries as shut down.
Before building a recurring workflow around a model, check its current status and access conditions. A preview or experimental model may be useful for evaluation, but its availability and limits may differ from a stable production option. Confirm geographic availability and retirement or deprecation notices for the specific model and product surface you intend to use.

- What exact input must the system accept, and what output must it produce?
- Do you need an app or an API, and is the feature available on that exact surface?
- Does the official documentation explicitly support the task and modality?
- Do representative, identical tests meet your quality bar?
- Does the expected workload fit the price, latency, limits, and controls?
- Are the model ID, access, version status, and lifecycle suitable for your use?
- Have you checked the applicable privacy and governance terms?
Recheck provider catalogs immediately before choosing or deploying: model details and availability are volatile, and a catalog description is not a substitute for testing your own work.
