How to Choose an AI Model for Defensive Security Work

A practical selection process for defensive security teams: define the workflow, test candidates on representative cases, threat-model deployment, and keep evaluating after launch.

There is no single best AI model for defensive security work. Choose one by defining the security task and its constraints, comparing candidates on representative examples from that workflow, and checking whether the model and its deployment can be operated safely. A general-purpose leaderboard cannot show that a model is suitable for your SOC’s malware-analysis, threat-intelligence, or other specific workflow.

Start with the defensive task, not the model

Write down the work you want the system to perform before comparing products or architectures. “Help the SOC” is too broad to evaluate; a task such as summarizing a threat-intelligence report or analyzing a malware sample is specific enough to define inputs, outputs, and review criteria.

Decide first whether AI is appropriate for the task. Then document who will use the system, what information it will receive, what tools or systems it may access, where processing is allowed, and what happens if it is wrong. Include the consequences of false positives and false negatives, response-time needs, and where a person must review the result. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) recommends making AI-specific design choices in light of a threat model and reassessing them as threats and security research evolve (NCSC secure-design guidance).

  • Task: What exact decision or piece of work should the model support?
  • Inputs: Will it see alerts, logs, reports, code, malware samples, or sensitive internal information?
  • Outputs: Must it produce a summary, structured fields, evidence-backed analysis, or a recommendation?
  • Authority: Can it only advise, or can it query systems, change configurations, or trigger actions?
  • Failure impact: What could happen if it misses a threat, invents evidence, or escalates a benign event?
  • Operating limits: What latency, availability, data-location, privacy, and human-review requirements apply?

Set hard constraints before making a shortlist

Separate requirements a candidate must meet from preferences that can be traded off. A model that violates a data-handling requirement should not remain on the shortlist because it performs well on a task test. The NCSC identifies several possible approaches—in-house training, using an existing model with or without fine-tuning, or calling an external API—and says suitability depends on the requirements of the system.

  • Data boundary: Decide which data may be processed externally and what controls must apply to data sent to a provider.
  • Provider assurance: Specify what security evidence and data-handling terms are required if using a hosted service.
  • Provenance and licensing: Establish what is known about the model, its components, and the terms governing its use.
  • Auditability: Decide what records analysts and investigators need to inspect or reproduce model-assisted work.
  • Deployment and access: Define where the model may run, who may use it, and what other systems or tools it may reach.

These constraints help determine which candidates are viable; they do not establish that a model is effective for the task. That requires a separate evaluation.

Evaluate candidates on the work they will actually do

Use the same authorized, representative examples, scoring rubric, and review process for each candidate. Include ordinary cases and the difficult conditions the system is likely to encounter, such as incomplete or noisy information. Where relevant, test adversarially crafted inputs and changes in the data distribution. Record error types, not just an overall impression of answer quality.

For a SOC workflow, the 2025 CyberSOCEval preprint evaluates malware analysis and threat-intelligence reasoning. Its benchmark can inform test design, but it does not establish performance for every organization or for tasks outside those evaluated. If reporting a result from the paper, name the benchmark and task rather than implying the score applies to incident response, detection engineering, vulnerability triage, or other work. The authors report that larger, more modern LLMs tend to perform better on their evaluations, that reasoning models using test-time scaling did not receive the same boost seen in coding and math, and that current LLMs are far from saturating the evaluations; these are findings within that benchmark, not guarantees about every model or workflow (Deason et al., CyberSOCEval).

Evaluation axis Questions to answer
Task performance Does the candidate complete the exact task correctly on representative examples? What errors does it make, and how consequential are they?
Robustness Does performance hold with noisy, incomplete, or adversarially crafted inputs? What changes under distribution shift?
Interpretability and auditability Can an analyst inspect, reproduce, and challenge the evidence behind an output?
Data and privacy What is known about training or tuning data? What information leaves the environment at inference, and what privacy controls apply?
Provenance and supply chain Can the team establish model and component provenance? Are imported weights and libraries scanned and isolated?
Provider and deployment security Does the provider’s security posture meet requirements? Can the data path for an API be controlled?
Autonomy and blast radius What actions can the system take? Are permissions limited, with human approval and fail-safes where needed?
Operational fit Can the system meet the workflow’s throughput, availability, latency, and continuity needs?

Use a written rubric and keep examples of both successful and failed cases. A single aggregate score can hide an error pattern that matters operationally—for example, strong performance on routine reports but unreliable handling of incomplete evidence. Decide in advance which failure modes disqualify a candidate and which require extra review or narrower use.

Threat-model the whole system and deployment path

A model is only one part of the system. Consider the surrounding data flows, interfaces, connected tools, provider services, imported components, users, and operational processes. NIST’s AI 100-2e2025 taxonomy of adversarial machine learning provides terminology and a taxonomy of attack methods, lifecycle stages, attacker goals and capabilities, and mitigations. It can help teams develop threat scenarios; it is not a model ranking.

  • For an external API: Review provider security and data-handling arrangements, and restrict sensitive information sent outside the organization’s control.
  • For imported model files: Treat weights and related files as untrusted third-party content. The NCSC warns that serialized model weights can expose users to arbitrary code execution; scan and isolate them before use.
  • For connected tools: Apply least privilege, validate inputs, and restrict model-triggered actions. Keep consequential actions behind appropriate human approval and fail-safes.
  • For the full workflow: Consider how an unexpected output or compromised component could affect users, the organization, and the wider system.

These deployment controls do not replace task testing. A model can be a good task performer but unsuitable for a particular data boundary or level of autonomy, or it can meet deployment requirements while failing the task evaluation.

The UK’s voluntary AI Cyber Security Code of Practice calls for system-operator testing before deployment, security testing and evaluation after major model updates, and logging actions to support investigations and remediation. Treat a significant update as a reason to test again rather than assuming the previous result still applies.

Reassess when the model or operating conditions change

Set review triggers before launch. Reopen the evaluation when the model version changes, new data sources or tools are added, permissions expand, the provider or deployment path changes, security research materially changes the threat picture, or the workflow itself shifts. Reassess the threat model as well as task performance: a model that still answers well may now operate across a different data boundary or with greater authority.

NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) is voluntary and intended to support trustworthiness considerations in AI design, development, use, and evaluation. NIST says AI RMF 1.0 is being revised; its AI Resource Center provides testing, evaluation, verification, and validation material and notes that its Playbook will be updated after the revision. NIST announced a concept note for a Trustworthy AI in Critical Infrastructure profile on April 7, 2026. Check the current official material rather than treating a framework snapshot as permanently current (NIST AI RMF).
