How to Choose Air Filtration for a Data Center

MERV 11 or 13 can be a starting point for incoming-air filtration, but the right data-center filter depends on contamination, cooling design, cleanliness targets, airflow limits, and maintenance.

Choose data-center air filtration by tracing where air and contaminants enter, setting the required cleanliness target, and matching a tested filter to the cooling system’s airflow and pressure-drop limits. MERV 11 or preferably MERV 13 is a starting point for incoming air in applicable ASHRAE guidance—not a universal specification. Airside economizers, equipment requirements, gaseous contaminants, and maintenance capacity can all change the right choice.

Start with the air path and contamination sources

Before comparing filters, map how air moves through the facility: outside-air intakes, airside economizer or free-cooling paths, recirculation, leakage, and the air-handling equipment serving each space. The filtration decision depends on which of those paths can carry contaminants to the IT equipment.

Outdoor air is only one source. Boxes and dirty equipment can bring dust into the room and accelerate filter loading; unpacking, paper dust, and contamination tracked in through entrances are also operational sources. ASHRAE identifies sulfur compounds and other gases as potential corrosive contaminants. Its 2023 Handbook chapter on data centers and telecommunication facilities discusses particulate and gaseous contamination as separate concerns.

  • Particulates: Identify dust and other airborne particles that can accumulate on equipment or obstruct airflow.
  • Gases: Consider whether site conditions create corrosive contamination; a particulate filter rating alone does not establish protection from gases.
  • Indoor sources: Include handling, packaging, paper, and housekeeping practices in the assessment, not just the outdoor environment.

Set the cleanliness target before choosing a rating

Use the facility and equipment design requirements to determine the cleanliness target, including the applicable standard and measurement protocol. ISO Class 8 appears in both ASHRAE’s data-center guidance and NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD H100 design case, but that does not make it a universal requirement for every facility. Confirm the target for the specific project and equipment.

ASHRAE Technical Committee 9.9’s 2011 Gaseous and Particulate Contamination Guidelines For Data Centers describes MERV 11 or preferably MERV 13 for incoming air in applicable cases. For continuous room-air filtration in its specific no-economizer case, it identifies MERV 8. The same guideline says that, with airside economizers, the filter choice for achieving ISO Class 8 depends on the conditions at that data center. Because this guidance dates to 2011, verify current project requirements and standards before specifying a system.

What MERV rating do you need?

Use the ASHRAE guidance as a starting point, then check the actual air source, cooling configuration, target cleanliness, and system limits. A rating by itself does not tell you whether the filter fits the air handler, maintains required airflow, or addresses the contamination present at your site.

Equipment-specific requirements can be more prescriptive. NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD H100 data-center design guide specifies at least MERV 13-rated filtration, or listed regional alternatives, when airside-economizer operation or potentially contaminated source air applies. It also specifies ISO Class 8 rack-area cleanliness and a particle-count limit of 3,520,000 at 0.5 μm/m³ for no longer than 15 minutes. These are design requirements for the covered NVIDIA system, not a mandate for all data centers.

Do not assume that MERV, EN 779, and ISO 16890 ratings convert directly into one another. NVIDIA warns that the testing and evaluation procedures for ASHRAE 52.2, EN 779-2012, and ISO 16890 differ significantly, making direct comparisons potentially misleading. ASHRAE’s 2024 Handbook chapter on particulate air cleaners describes ISO 16890’s ePM classification. Ask suppliers for the test method and report behind a rating, rather than comparing labels as if they were equivalent.

What changes with an airside economizer?

An airside economizer brings outside air into the cooling path under suitable operating conditions, so the outdoor-air contamination profile and site conditions become central to filter selection. ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline does not prescribe a single rating for every economizer; it says the choice depends on the specific conditions present at the data center.

For a DGX SuperPOD H100 design using airside economizer operation, NVIDIA’s manufacturer guidance sets a minimum MERV 13 rating or specified regional alternative for potentially contaminated air. Apply that requirement to the system it covers, and check the requirements for the actual IT equipment and cooling design in your facility.

Do you need HEPA filtration?

The cited guidance does not establish HEPA filtration as a default data-center requirement. Specify it only when measured contamination and the required cleanliness target justify it, and when the air-handling system is designed to accommodate the filter’s airflow resistance and physical requirements. A higher filtration class is not automatically a better fit if the system cannot preserve the required airflow.

Check pressure drop, fit, energy, and maintenance

ASHRAE’s filter-selection guidance treats cleanliness as one part of a broader decision that includes initial and maintenance cost, energy effectiveness, space, and airflow resistance. Compare candidate filters using data from standardized test methods and confirm their dimensions, depth, fit, and allowable pressure drop against the air-handling system.

  • Airflow and pressure drop: Confirm that the filter works within the equipment’s limits in both clean and loaded conditions. Obtain operating-condition data, not only a rating.
  • Physical fit: Check the frame dimensions and depth against the filter housing; an unsuitable fit can undermine the intended filtration.
  • Energy and space: Account for resistance to airflow and the physical space available, along with the effect on system operation.
  • Lifecycle practicality: Consider replacement cost, procurement, maintenance labor, and how frequently the facility can inspect and service filters.

ASHRAE’s 2024 Handbook chapter on particulate air cleaners addresses selection factors and standardized testing. Ask suppliers for performance, pressure-drop, size, depth, and operating-condition data so the comparison reflects the installed system rather than the filter label alone.

How to monitor contamination and decide when to replace filters

There is no universal replacement interval established by the cited guidance. Plan inspection and replacement around measured filter loading and equipment limits, rather than assuming a fixed schedule will suit every site. ASHRAE describes visual filter inspection for airborne dust; the facility’s maintenance plan should also address indoor sources that can load filters quickly.

For gaseous corrosivity, ASHRAE describes copper and silver coupons analyzed by a laboratory. Such monitoring can help determine whether corrosive gases are present; particulate filtration alone does not establish protection against them. Use measured site conditions to assess whether an engineered gas-phase filtration solution is needed.

A practical selection sequence

  1. Map the air paths: Document outside-air intakes, economizer or free-cooling operation, recirculation, leakage, and likely indoor contamination sources.
  2. Characterize contamination: Assess particulate and gaseous contamination through suitable inspection and monitoring instead of inferring it from geography or a filter rating.
  3. Set the target: Confirm cleanliness and measurement requirements from facility and equipment design documents, including the applicable standard and protocol.
  4. Compare tested products: Request the rating’s test method and report, performance data, airflow resistance, dimensions, depth, and operating-condition information. Do not treat MERV, EN, and ISO values as exact equivalents.
  5. Validate system fit: Check that the filter housing and air handler can accommodate the selected filter while maintaining required airflow across clean and loaded conditions.
  6. Plan operation: Account for energy, space, cost, procurement, and maintenance capacity; define inspections and replacement using measured loading and equipment limits.
  7. Address gases separately: If monitoring indicates corrosive gases, evaluate an engineered gas-phase solution in addition to particulate filtration.
