The strongest check is whether the game’s publisher currently names the seller as an approved retailer. A key that activates is not proof of authorization or lasting access: publishers may later ban or revoke keys they determine were obtained fraudulently. Check the seller, the exact listing, and the remedy available before you pay.
Check the publisher’s current approved-retailer information
- Identify the game’s publisher and the platform or launcher where the key will activate.
- Go to the publisher’s own website and look for its current approved-retailer information. Check the seller’s name and, where the publisher’s information distinguishes them, the relevant title and region. Lists and commercial arrangements can change, so verify current information rather than relying on an old mention.
- Prefer the publisher’s own store or a retailer it identifies as approved. Ubisoft, for example, recommends buying Ubisoft games and content from the Ubisoft Store or one of its approved retailers: Ubisoft Support.
A seller’s claim that it is “official,” a logo on its site, or a key that redeems does not independently establish publisher authorization. Steam’s support guidance explains revoked keys and outside purchases; it does not certify specific retailers: Steam Support: Revoked CD Keys.

Match the listing to your game and account
Before checkout, confirm the details below against the game and account you intend to use. A legitimate seller can still offer a listing that is wrong for your needs.
- Game: Check the full title, including any edition or bundle wording.
- Activation platform: Confirm which platform or launcher accepts the key; a PC game key is not necessarily a Steam key.
- Region: Look for country or region restrictions and confirm the key is intended for your account’s region.
- Edition and included content: Verify that the listing names the edition and any add-ons you expect.
- Delivery and restrictions: Read how the key is delivered and any conditions attached to its use.
Steam warns that keys offered in player-to-player trades may be for a different game, fake, already used, or region-restricted. That warning is specifically about community trading; it does not establish how often those problems occur across commercial retailers. See Steam’s Recommended Trading Practices.

Understand what activation does—and does not—prove
Activation and authorization are separate questions. Steam says a publisher may revoke a key if it determines that the key was obtained fraudulently. In that revoked-key scenario, the game is removed from the account, but Steam says the account itself is not restricted. Ubisoft also says codes bought through an irregular process, such as from an unapproved retailer, may be banned.
So a successful redemption is not a guarantee that the key’s origin is acceptable or that access will last. The official guidance cited here does not provide a general rate of bans or revocations, and it does not support labeling every third-party seller as unsafe.

Check the refund or replacement route before paying
Find the seller’s written refund and replacement terms before checkout, and save the order confirmation and listing. If something goes wrong, the seller—not the game platform—may be responsible for resolving an outside purchase. Steam says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam and suggests asking the third-party seller for a refund: Steam Support. Ubisoft likewise directs buyers whose code has been banned to contact the retailer for a replacement or refund: Ubisoft Support.
Keep the receipt, order number, listing description, and seller correspondence. If the key is rejected, banned, or later revoked, contact the seller promptly and request the remedy stated in its terms.

Compare sellers using evidence, not a “safe” label
When comparing options, weigh the evidence that affects your purchase and your ability to resolve a problem:
- Whether the publisher currently identifies the seller as approved.
- Whether the game, platform, edition, and region match what you need.
- Whether refund or replacement terms are clear and available in writing.
- The total price, considered alongside authorization and recourse—not as proof of legitimacy by itself.
The official guidance cited above does not establish a universal price cutoff or a cross-publisher seller-rating standard. Microsoft’s advice about counterfeit, previously used, or blocked software keys is about Microsoft software, not PC game-key sellers, so it should not be treated as game-specific evidence: Microsoft: How to Tell.
