Choose a wet-dry vacuum by starting with what you will clean, where you will store it, and how often you will move it. A compact model is easier to carry and tuck away; a larger drum means fewer interruptions for emptying but takes more space and becomes heavier as it fills. Then match filtration, airflow, hose, and attachments to the debris you expect to pick up.
Start with the cleanup jobs and storage space
List the jobs you expect to do: occasional liquid spills, car interiors, workshop debris, or repeated larger messes. Capacity is a trade-off, not a quality ranking. Small vacuums suit limited storage and jobs where carrying ease matters; larger models can hold more debris before emptying, but demand more storage space and are harder to move when full. Shop-Vac offers similar capacity and storage guidance in its FAQ. Consumer Reports’ buying guide was updated September 15, 2016 and is archival; it says it no longer updates the category.

- Choose portability if you will carry the vacuum between floors, take it to a vehicle, or store it in a tight space.
- Prioritize capacity if you regularly clean larger messes and have room for a bigger machine.
- Consider the full-tank move: handles, wheels, and the distance to the cleanup area affect whether a larger model will be practical.
Capacity labels need context. RIDGID says the gallon figure on its product pages is drum volume, which may not equal the amount of debris the vacuum can collect. Usable capacity depends on debris type, filter condition, and other factors. Check the exact model’s documentation rather than treating gallons as a guaranteed working capacity.
Match the filter to wet or dry pickup
“The filter you need is based on the type of debris you are picking up,” says the Shop-Vac FAQ. For wet pickup, Shop-Vac recommends a foam sleeve; dry debris calls for suitable dry filtration. Fine dust may require higher-efficiency or HEPA filtration, but only if the specific vacuum supports it. An unsuitable filter can allow dust or water to pass back into the room, so confirm the instructions and compatibility for the exact model before changing filters or switching between wet and dry use.

- For liquids, check whether the manufacturer specifies a foam sleeve or another wet-pickup configuration.
- For ordinary dry debris, use the model’s recommended filter and any specified collection bag.
- For fine dust, verify that the model supports the appropriate higher-efficiency filter; do not assume a HEPA option fits every vacuum.
- Before buying replacement filters, sleeves, or bags, confirm the model number and that the part is compatible and available.
Shop-Vac’s guidance on pickup and model fit is in its FAQ. Consumer Reports also advises checking replacement-filter availability, particularly for unusual filter types, in its archival guide.
Compare performance measures, not just peak horsepower
Where manufacturers provide them, Shop-Vac identifies sealed pressure, airflow (CFM), and air watts as useful performance readings. Airflow can be particularly relevant for lighter material such as wood chips and dust. Peak horsepower alone is a poor basis for choosing between models: RIDGID describes peak HP as a laboratory maximum-output measure, not a complete account of how a vacuum will handle a particular cleanup.

- PORTABLE: Lightweight, 2.5-gallon wet dry shop vac offers unparalleled mobility
- IDEAL FOR SMALL MESSES: Perfect for the home, garage, cars, trucks and vans
- EASY TO STORE: Compact size, carry handle and cord wrap feature allow for easy storage
- TWO-IN-ONE CAPABILITY: Shop vacuum can be used as a blower for added versatility
- DESIGNED FOR TIGHT SPACES: 1-1/4 in. shop vacuum accessories allow for maneuverability in tight areas
Compare specifications on the same terms and for the task you care about. A rating does not establish how well one model performs against another in independent testing. For example, RIDGID lists 4.25 peak HP, 231 air watts, 76 CFM, and 70 inches of lift for its specific 9-gallon NXT model. Those are manufacturer-listed specifications for that product, not category-wide benchmarks or independent comparative results.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose a hose and attachments for the material and reach
Hose diameter affects what can pass through without clogging. Shop-Vac suggests considering a 2.5-inch hose for large debris. A narrower or shorter hose may be easier to handle for other jobs, so balance debris size with reach and storage. Check hose length and diameter along with the tools included, and verify compatibility before buying additional attachments.

- Wet nozzle: useful for collecting liquids from floors.
- Utility nozzle and crevice tool: help address general surfaces and narrow spaces.
- Extension wands: add reach without moving the vacuum as often.
- Tank drain: can make emptying collected liquid more convenient.
- Blower port: may be useful for tasks such as moving leaves or debris, if included and appropriate for the job.
One current U.S. example of the details worth comparing is RIDGID’s 9-gallon NXT: its product page lists a 1-7/8-inch by 7-foot hose, extension wands, utility and wet nozzles, a general-debris filter, a blower port, onboard storage, and carrying handles. This illustrates a specification checklist, not a recommendation that this model is best. Shop-Vac notes that fit varies by model in its FAQ.
Check ongoing fit, storage, and current availability
Before choosing a model, check where the vacuum and its hose, nozzles, and replacement parts will live. Make sure replacement filters, foam sleeves, and bags are available for that exact model, and confirm attachment fit rather than relying on appearance alone. Shop-Vac’s FAQ notes that filter and accessory compatibility varies by model.
