A conventional wet/dry vacuum, a wet-dry hard-floor cleaner, and a carpet extractor do different jobs. Check the exact model’s manual before using it on any surface, especially before applying liquid to carpet or hardwood.
What “wet-dry vacuum” means for your floors
The label alone does not mean a machine can wash carpet and every hard floor. A conventional wet/dry vacuum can collect dry debris and, if its manual permits, liquid. A wet-dry hard-floor cleaner typically dispenses cleaning liquid and recovers it with a roller. A carpet spray-extraction cleaner is designed to wash carpet. Their supported surfaces and modes are not interchangeable.

For example, the Kärcher SE 4 Select instructions specify different accessories for carpet and hard floors, and distinguish dry vacuuming from hard-floor or water pickup. Dreame’s cordless wet-dry vacuum guidance describes wet cleaning on sealed hard floors and dry-only pickup on carpet. These are model-specific instructions, not a rule for every machine.

Can you use one on carpet?
Dry-vacuum carpet only when the manual allows it and you have the appropriate nozzle or floor setting. Some machines support carpet for dry debris but not for wet cleaning. A hard-floor wet-dry cleaner should not be assumed to wash carpet; its wet mode may be limited to hard floors.

Carpet spill pickup and carpet washing are also different tasks. Use a machine for liquid pickup only if its manual permits that use on carpet. For washing or extracting carpet, choose a carpet-capable spray-extraction cleaner and follow the machine’s instructions and the carpet maker’s care guidance. Kärcher’s SE 4 Select alternate-revision instructions describe carpet and hard-floor inserts; that does not make every wet/dry vacuum a carpet washer.
Can you use one on tile?
Often, if the particular machine lists tile as an approved surface. Hoover’s FloorMate manual includes tile among the non-carpeted surfaces for wet cleaning. Kärcher’s SE 4 instructions specify a hard-floor insert for dry dirt on hard floors and for water pickup. Follow the machine’s instructions as well as the tile and grout care guidance; not every tile finish or grout should be treated the same way.

Can you use one on hardwood?
Only wet-clean hardwood when the flooring maker says that the floor’s finish and condition can tolerate the method. Hoover’s manual tells users to follow the wood-floor manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations, and its allowance for particular sealed wood surfaces should not be generalized to all hardwood. If the care guidance is unclear, avoid wet mode and use a method approved for that floor.

- Identify the exact machine. Determine whether it is a conventional wet/dry vacuum, a wet-dry hard-floor cleaner, or a carpet spray extractor.
- Check the manual’s surface and mode instructions. Confirm whether your floor is permitted for dry pickup, liquid pickup, or washing; these are separate uses.
- Install the specified attachment. Use the floorhead, insert, or nozzle required for the surface and task.
- For carpet, clarify the job. Dry debris pickup, spill pickup, and carpet washing require different capabilities; do not infer one from another.
- For hardwood, check with the flooring maker. Verify that the finish, condition, moisture, and cleaning solution are suitable before wet cleaning.
- For tile, check the finish and grout. Make sure they are compatible with the machine’s moisture and solution method.
When comparing machines, look for the exact surfaces permitted in each mode, whether carpet support means dry pickup or washing, and which floorheads or inserts are included. The model manual—not the phrase “wet-dry”—is the deciding reference.
