Choose a video game adaptation by the experience you want on screen—not just by the franchise name. Decide whether you want a familiar game story, a new story in a recognizable world, or a film or series that turns gameplay into atmosphere; then narrow by format, tone, age guidance, and what is available in your region.
Start with the kind of adaptation you want
“Faithful” can mean more than repeating the game’s plot. An adaptation may preserve its emotional arc, build a new story inside its world, or translate its mechanics and atmosphere into screen language. Pick the approach that sounds most appealing before choosing a title.

A familiar story and emotional arc
For a screen version that follows the source game’s emotional journey, consider The Last of Us. The British Film Institute describes the HBO series as following the game’s emotional arc while retaining its core survival-horror experience. It is a useful starting point if you want recognizable story material alongside the tension of the game world. BFI’s video game adaptations guide discusses this approach.

A fresh story in a familiar world
If you care more about returning to a game’s setting and tone than watching its plot replayed, Fallout may fit better. BFI describes the series as a fresh story set in an authentic recreation of the role-playing franchise’s world. That makes it a different proposition from a close retelling.

Gameplay and atmosphere translated for the screen
Some games are defined less by a conventional narrative than by what players do and feel. BFI describes the 2025 film Exit 8 as turning the game’s looping structure and anomaly-finding rules into a claustrophobic cinematic experience. Look for this approach when you want a screen work that captures a game’s central idea rather than reproducing its play.
Choose a format, tone, and genre
A franchise can produce very different viewing experiences depending on whether the adaptation is a feature film or an episodic series, animated or live action, light or unsettling. Before pressing play, check the runtime or episode commitment and the genre. The examples covered by BFI, Common Sense Media, and JustWatch range from family adventure to post-apocalyptic drama and horror.

- Want a shorter commitment? Start with a feature film; a series gives a story more room but asks for more viewing time.
- Want animation or live action? Check the title’s format rather than assuming it matches the game’s look.
- Want a particular mood? Use genre and tone as filters: a family adventure and a survival-horror drama are not interchangeable just because both came from games.
Check age guidance and content notes for the actual viewers
Do not use the source game’s audience as a shortcut for deciding whether its adaptation suits a household. Screen versions can differ in intensity and content. Common Sense Media provides recommended ages and content summaries; those are its guide’s recommendations, not universal rules or replacements for local film and television ratings.

Use awards as a discovery clue, not a verdict
Award recognition can help surface a candidate, but it cannot tell you whether its tone, format, or adaptation approach matches your taste. The Game Awards’ 2025 Best Adaptation page names The Last of Us: Season 2 as the winner, with Devil May Cry and Splinter Cell: Deathwatch among the nominees. Treat the list as a shortlist to explore, not a ranking of what you personally should watch. See the 2025 Best Adaptation nominees and winner.
Verify where it streams in your region
Streaming catalogs vary by country and change over time, so a service listed for one market may not carry the title where you live. PlayStation’s official screen-properties page gives examples—Twisted Metal on Peacock and The Last of Us Season 2 on Max—and explicitly notes regional limits. Use those examples as leads, then check the service’s current local catalog before planning to watch. PlayStation Productions’ screen-properties page is a starting point, not a region-wide availability guarantee.

- In THE IMITATION GAME, Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Alan Turing, the genius British mathematician, logician, cryptologist and computer scientist who led the charge to crack the German Enigma Code that helped the Allies win WWII. Set your country or region first, then search the exact film or series; a listing can still change after you check it. Use this quick decision path
- Pick an adaptation approach: close emotional retelling, new story in the game’s world, or translation of gameplay and atmosphere.
- Set the viewing constraints: film or series, animation or live action, preferred genre, and acceptable intensity.
- Check household suitability: read age recommendations, content notes, and the rating used in your market.
- Confirm access: search the title in a current local streaming catalog or service guide.
- Decide whether to explore the game: it can add context, but it is not a prerequisite for watching.
Should you play the game first?
Only if you want to. Knowing the game can make references, settings, or changes more meaningful, but the examples above include adaptations built around new stories or translated mechanics as well as retellings. PlayStation lists The Last of Us Part I for PS5 among the games behind its screen properties; that is an optional way to explore the source material, not a requirement for enjoying the series.
