Parents can reduce many online risks without routinely reading a child’s private messages. Set transparent boundaries around content, screen time, spending, contacts, location and app permissions; apply them across the devices and services the child actually uses; and pair those controls with regular, age-appropriate conversations. No setting can prevent every problem, so children also need to know how to block, report and ask for help.
Start with clear, shared expectations
Explain what safety settings you plan to use and why. Agree on practical family rules, such as when devices can be used, what to do before spending money, and how to respond to unwanted contact. The FTC’s U.S. consumer guidance says that discussing family rules and expectations helps children establish good online habits. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) likewise advises parents to talk openly and honestly about chosen parental controls.

Give children room to ask questions and, especially as they get older, involve them in decisions. Make clear that ordinary safety checks do not mean routine access to the contents of private conversations. If a specific concern arises, explain what response is needed rather than making secret monitoring the default.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMap where your child goes online
Before changing settings, make a practical inventory of the devices, accounts and services your child uses. Include phones, tablets, computers, game consoles, smart TVs, social platforms, games and the home Wi-Fi network. A setting on one device or network may not apply to another app, account or device, and router controls do not follow a child onto a mobile connection or another network.

For each service, check its current family, privacy and safety settings. Features and labels change, so use the device or service’s own current guidance rather than assuming a control works everywhere.
Choose controls for the concern you want to address
Built-in controls from Apple, Google and Microsoft, along with settings in individual apps and games, can address different kinds of risk. Choose by coverage, what the setting actually controls, compatibility with the services your child uses, and whether you can explain and adjust it as they mature. There is no established product ranking or single control that covers every situation.

| Concern | Control to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Exposure to unsuitable material | Content filters or age-appropriate content settings | Which apps, websites or devices are covered, and whether the filter can be adjusted for your child’s needs. |
| When or how long devices are used | Screen-time limits, schedules or downtime | Whether limits apply to the device, selected apps or account, and what happens when time runs out. |
| Unintended purchases | Purchase approval or spending restrictions | Whether the control covers in-app purchases, subscriptions and purchases on each relevant account or device. |
| Unwanted calls or messages | Contact controls, privacy settings or trusted-contact approvals where available | Who can find the child, view their profile, contact them or add them to groups. |
| Unnecessary access to personal information | App permissions and location-sharing controls | Whether an app genuinely needs access to location, camera, microphone, contacts or photos for the child’s use. |
| Use on the home network | Router or Wi-Fi controls | Which connected devices and network activity the setting covers; it will not govern use away from that network. |
These controls set boundaries around access and exposure without requiring routine reading of message contents. Select the narrowest setting that addresses the concern, and tell your child what it does.
Reduce unwanted contact and oversharing
Review who can see a child’s profile, find them, send messages or call them. Where a service offers trusted-contact approvals, consider whether they suit your child’s age and circumstances. Check location sharing with unknown people and turn it off when it is not needed. Also review permissions for the camera, microphone, contacts and photos; limit access that is unnecessary for an app’s intended use.

Settings reduce exposure but cannot ensure that every interaction is safe. Talk about what information should not be shared publicly, including identifying details and real-time location, and agree on what the child should do if someone makes them uncomfortable.
Teach what to do when something feels wrong
Try unfamiliar apps or games together. Discuss suspicious links, unexpected requests for personal information and pressure to move a conversation elsewhere. Show your child how to block and report unwanted contact in the services they use, and make sure they know which trusted adult they can approach.

Respond calmly when a child asks for help. If they expect blame or an automatic loss of all device access, they may be less willing to raise a problem. The goal is to make seeking help easier, not to make a child feel that every online mistake will be treated as misconduct.
Review settings as devices and children change
Revisit controls periodically and when your child starts using a new device, app, account or network. Check that the settings still work as intended, since services can change their features. Adjust boundaries as your child gains maturity and can manage more independence. A family media or technology plan can record the shared expectations and make changes easier to discuss.

Understand what controls cannot do
The Australian eSafety Commissioner cautions: “No parental control tool is 100% effective. Helping your child build good online safety habits is just as important.” Filters and limits may miss content or interactions, and different controls cover different parts of a child’s online life. Treat them as one layer of support—not a guarantee or a substitute for communication and help-seeking skills.
