Choose Story Mode or GTA Online
Story Mode is the solo narrative, following three protagonists through a story that includes heists. GTA Online is a separate multiplayer experience with its own character and ongoing progression. Rockstar lists access options differently across platforms and editions, so check the current store page for your platform and confirm whether Story Mode is included before buying.

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online store listing and PlayStation 5 listing show that packaging and access can differ. Check the listing for your region and platform rather than assuming every version includes both modes.
Start solo with Story Mode
If you want the simplest introduction, launch Story Mode and follow the opening missions. They provide a guided entry into the campaign and its protagonists. The specific purchase or access route matters: Rockstar’s November 11, 2025 support note says GTA Online is required to play Story Mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S when Story Mode access came through a free-trial campaign or a subscription such as GTA+, Game Pass, or PlayStation Plus. That condition applies to those entitlement circumstances; it does not mean every owner needs an Online subscription to play Story Mode.

Playing Story Mode offline on PC
Rockstar says Story Mode generally does not require an internet connection on PC. Its offline launch instructions are specific to the PC launcher and include caveats: GTA Online, cloud saving or synchronization, and updates may still require a connection. Follow Rockstar’s current instructions for launching GTAV on PC in offline mode; do not treat them as universal console instructions.
Start GTA Online and progress through normal activities
GTA Online has a separate character and progression track. Complete the introductory setup, then use the jobs and activities available to your character to learn the controls and get oriented. You can take part in cooperative content without first qualifying to host it.

Joining versus hosting Heists
Rockstar’s Heist access guidance, last updated April 25, 2024, says a character must be Rank 12 and own a high-end apartment to host a Heist. If you are below that threshold, you can join an invited Heist or open the in-game phone’s Quick Job menu and choose “Play Heist.” The host requirements are not a barrier to joining.

Career Builder is an optional starting choice for new players, or players resetting a character, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC Enhanced. Rockstar’s Career Builder overview, last updated April 29, 2024, lists four paths: Biker, Executive, Gunrunner, and Nightclub Owner.

The feature is available once. It gives you a GTA$4,000,000 selection balance for choosing assets and equipment, but no more than GTA$1,000,000 can carry forward into GTA Online after those selections. Treat it as a one-time setup budget, not GTA$4,000,000 of transferable cash. Choose the path whose business style you want to try; the available official guidance does not establish one as objectively best.
Keep play legitimate and avoid cheat tools
For ordinary progression, use missions, jobs, activities, and invited cooperative content. Do not install tools that manipulate protected game code or use unauthorized cheats in GTA Online. Rockstar says its BattlEye anti-cheat system protects GTA Online against cheating software and code manipulation. On PC, Story Mode can be played without BattlEye under the described settings, but GTA Online cannot; see Rockstar’s BattlEye FAQ, last updated June 17, 2025.

Check edition and access before you buy
GTAV and GTA Online are sold or presented as different access options depending on the storefront and edition. Before purchasing, check the current listing for your platform, region, and edition, and make sure it includes the mode you intend to play. This is especially important if your access comes from a free trial or subscription: Rockstar’s November 11, 2025 note about requiring GTA Online for Story Mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S describes that specific access scenario, not a universal requirement for all Story Mode owners.
