How to Choose a USB Cable or Wireless Adapter for Android Auto

Choose an Android Auto cable or wireless adapter only after confirming your phone and car support the connection. Learn what to check and how to troubleshoot first.

Check compatibility before buying anything: your car and phone must support the Android Auto connection you want. For wired use, start with the phone’s supplied cable or choose a high-quality data cable under 1 metre (3 feet), with ends that fit your phone and car. For wireless use, confirm that both devices support wireless Android Auto. A wireless bridge adapter is an option only if factory-wired Android Auto already works in your car.

First check what your car and phone support

A USB port alone does not mean a vehicle supports Android Auto. Check the car’s manual or ask the manufacturer whether your exact model, trim and head unit support wired Android Auto, wireless Android Auto, or both. Google directs drivers to their phone and vehicle makers for device-specific compatibility confirmation.

Google’s current Android Auto requirements list Android 9 or later, an active data plan and a compatible car for wired projection. Wireless projection requires a compatible phone with active data and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, as well as a compatible car or stereo; Google’s page says wireless projection is compatible with phones running Android 11. In the European Union, additional 5 GHz regulatory requirements apply, so verify that the phone meets them.

Choose the connection type that fits your setup

Option What must be compatible Best fit
USB cable A car with wired Android Auto, a compatible phone, and a data-capable cable with ends that fit both ports. You want a direct connection without an extra adapter.
Native wireless Android Auto A car or stereo and phone that both support wireless Android Auto; the phone also needs active data and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. You want a wireless connection and both devices support it.
Wireless bridge adapter A car with working factory-wired Android Auto and a phone that meets wireless requirements. Exact vehicle compatibility varies. Your car supports wired Android Auto but not native wireless projection.

How to choose a USB cable

Use a high-quality cable that supports data, not a charge-only cable. Google recommends keeping it under 1 metre (3 feet), avoiding USB hubs and extensions, and trying the cable supplied with the phone. The connector type is not universal: choose ends that match the phone and the Android Auto USB port in the car.

  • Check cable certification. Google says third-party cables can work when they meet USB Implementers Forum standards and advises checking whether the cable was certified within the past two years.
  • Keep the connection simple. Connect the phone directly to the car; do not add a hub or extension.

Google’s cable troubleshooting guidance gives the length recommendation and other connection checks. It does not specify one universally correct cable model or connector type.

When a wireless adapter makes sense

A bridge adapter uses the car’s existing wired Android Auto capability to connect wirelessly to a compatible phone. It does not add Android Auto to a car that lacks it. Before buying one, connect the phone directly to the car’s Android Auto USB port and confirm that wired Android Auto works.

Then check the adapter maker’s compatibility information for your exact vehicle, trim, head unit and phone. Motorola’s MA1 product support describes factory-fitted wired Android Auto as the basis for use and notes that compatibility depends on the automaker’s USB and Android Auto implementation; it identifies Mitsubishi among brands known to be incompatible. AAWireless’s product information and FAQ likewise says its adapter is for wired-Android-Auto vehicles, recommends testing a direct wired connection first, and says the dongle is incompatible with vehicles that already have native wireless Android Auto.

Set up wireless Android Auto

For native wireless Android Auto, follow the car and phone makers’ setup steps. Google says the first wireless connection pairs the phone and car over Bluetooth. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services on during setup, and follow any prompts on the phone or car screen. Google’s setup instructions cover the wired and wireless connection process.

Troubleshoot before buying anything

If wired Android Auto used to work and has stopped, Google says replacing the cable will likely fix the issue. Before purchasing a replacement, confirm that the vehicle supports Android Auto, connect with a known-good short data cable, remove any hub or extension, and follow the on-screen setup prompts. If a new cable does not resolve it, check the phone and vehicle makers’ compatibility and troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming any USB port supports Android Auto.
