Zcash ETF vs. Buying ZEC Directly: Risks, Costs, and Trade-Offs

As of October 7, 2026, the choice is between investment exposure through a U.S.-listed fund and owning ZEC itself. The Zcash ETF (ticker ZCSH) holds ZEC, but its shares are not tokens you can send, spend, shield, or hold in your own wallet. Buying ZEC directly can enable network use and, with self-custody, control of the private keys—but it also means making decisions about platforms, transfers, wallets, and security. ZCSH offers a brokerage-based route with outsourced custody and a 2.5% annual Sponsor’s Fee; direct ownership avoids that fund fee but can carry other costs and operational risks.

What ZCSH represents—and what it does not

The Zcash ETF is a Delaware statutory trust that holds ZEC. Its shares trade on NYSE Arca under ticker ZCSH. The Trust changed its name from Grayscale Zcash Trust (ZEC) on August 24, 2026. Its stated objective is for the value of a share, based on the amount of ZEC attributable to it, to reflect the value of the Trust’s ZEC using the stated index price, less expenses and liabilities. The August 24, 2026 prospectus and SEC filing detail describe the fund and its name change.

A ZCSH share is a fractional beneficial interest in the Trust, not ZEC in the shareholder’s wallet. Buying shares through a brokerage account gives exposure through a security; it does not let the shareholder move the Trust’s ZEC or use it on the Zcash network. Buying ZEC directly is different: the buyer can hold it with a custodial platform or withdraw it to a wallet they control. Only the latter is self-custody, where control of the private keys—and responsibility for safeguarding them—rests with the holder.

How the costs compare

The main clearly stated recurring charge for ZCSH is the Sponsor’s Fee. The 2026 prospectus sets it at 2.5% annually of the Trust’s NAV Fee Basis Amount, accrued daily in U.S. dollars and paid to the sponsor in ZEC. Because the fee is paid from Trust assets, it reduces the assets attributable to shares over time. As arithmetic only, a constant 2.5% annual charge on a hypothetical $10,000 exposure would be roughly $250 over one year before compounding and changes in ZEC’s price; it is not a prediction of any investor’s realized cost.

The sponsor pays specified ordinary operating costs, including custody, administration, transfer-agent and trustee expenses, as well as certain listing expenses up to $600,000 in a fiscal year. The prospectus permits certain other expenses to be charged to the Trust, including taxes, some extraordinary services, indemnification costs, some listing costs above that cap, and extraordinary legal expenses. Investors may also pay brokerage commissions, spreads, or account fees, depending on their broker and account.

Direct ZEC ownership has no Trust Sponsor’s Fee, but it is not automatically cheaper. Costs can include a platform’s trading fee and spread, withdrawal or network fees, and the time or expense involved in wallet setup and security. Amounts vary by venue, transaction, and custody approach; no single direct-purchase total applies to every buyer. The relevant comparison is the investor’s expected holding period and trading frequency: a recurring fund fee can matter over a long holding period, while direct ownership can add transaction and operational costs. The prospectus sets out the fund fee and expense arrangements.

Control, network use, and Zcash privacy

ZCSH shareholders cannot use their shares to send ZEC on-chain or choose whether a transaction uses shielded or unshielded features. Direct ZEC ownership can support network use, subject to wallet support and the circumstances of the transaction. Zcash does not make every transfer private by default: shielded transactions use zk-SNARKs to protect transaction amount and sender/recipient information, while unshielded transactions are publicly viewable and can support selective disclosure. The distinction is described in the fund prospectus.

Fund holders also rely on intermediaries rather than controlling the Trust’s keys or moving its holdings themselves. The prospectus names Grayscale Investments Sponsors, LLC as sponsor; CSC Delaware Trust Company as trustee; BNY Mellon as transfer agent and administrator; Coinbase, Inc. as prime broker; and Coinbase Custody Trust Company, LLC as custodian. A September 29, 2026 agreement and October 5 supplement added Anchorage Digital Bank N.A. as an additional custodian that may hold a portion of the Trust’s ZEC. See the September 29 Form 8-K and October 5 prospectus supplement.

Trade-offs at a glance

Consideration ZCSH fund shares Direct ZEC
How you access it Through a brokerage account and securities market. Through a digital-asset platform or peer-to-peer route, subject to jurisdiction and availability.
Ongoing and transaction costs 2.5% annual Sponsor’s Fee, plus any brokerage costs and possible extraordinary Trust expenses. No fund Sponsor’s Fee; platform trading, spread, transfer, custody, and security costs may apply.
Control and use No personal control of the underlying ZEC and no direct network transactions. Can be used on the network; self-custody requires secure private-key management.
Trading hours Shares trade during exchange hours. Digital-asset venues generally operate continuously, though access and liquidity vary.
Price relationship Share price can differ from NAV; market liquidity and the fund’s index mechanics matter. Prices can vary by venue; platform access and liquidity vary.
Operational dependencies Trust terms, sponsor, custodians, prime broker, administrator, and exchange. Any platform or custodian used, plus wallet software, keys, and transaction handling if self-custodied.
Regulatory and structural exposure Fund registration, listing, Trust terms, and possible changes to legal treatment. Digital-asset access and transfer rules, which vary by jurisdiction and venue.

Fund-specific risks: trading, tracking, and service providers

ZCSH trades on the timetable of a U.S. securities exchange, while digital-asset markets operate continuously. ZEC can move while the exchange is closed, so a share’s last closing price may not reflect conditions when trading resumes. Share price can also depart from net asset value (NAV), and investors face the Trust’s service-provider and legal structure as well as ZEC’s market risk.

Historical figures illustrate why venue and date matter, but they do not describe current ZCSH trading. In its 2025 annual report, the Trust reported that from October 18, 2021 through December 31, 2025, its OTCQX share closing price reached a maximum 240% premium and a maximum 55% discount to NAV; the average premium was 53% and the average discount was 20%. On December 31, 2025, the shares closed at a 24% discount to NAV on OTCQX. These are historical OTCQX observations, not current NYSE Arca prices. The report also said that during calendar 2025 the average differential between 4 p.m. spot prices across included platforms and the Index Price was 0.67%; the average of the daily maximum single-platform differentials was 11.98%, and the largest such differential on a day was 32.50%. Those filing-reported index observations are not forecasts or current spread estimates. The 2025 annual report provides the historical figures and discussion.

The prospectus says Trust holdings are not fully insured and warns that shareholders may have limited legal recourse for losses for which no person or entity is liable. The annual report also describes the risk that a determination ZEC is a security could adversely affect ZEC and the shares and could lead to extraordinary expenses or termination or operational changes. Direct holders avoid these Trust-specific tracking and structural risks, but remain exposed to ZEC’s market risk and, depending on how they hold it, platform, custody, software, transfer, and key-loss risks.

Which route better fits your priorities?

There is no universally better route. Compare the features that matter to how you intend to hold or use ZEC:

  • For brokerage-based investment exposure: ZCSH offers a securities-market route and outsourced custody, in exchange for the Sponsor’s Fee and dependence on the Trust’s structure, service providers, trading hours, and share-price relationship to NAV.
  • For network functionality: Direct ZEC is the relevant route if you want to send or receive ZEC. A fund share cannot perform those transactions.
  • For private-key control: Direct purchase alone does not guarantee self-custody; that requires withdrawing to a wallet whose keys you control. It also means protecting those keys and handling transfers correctly.
  • For cost comparison: Estimate the fund fee over your intended holding period and include applicable brokerage charges. For direct ZEC, account for venue fees and spread, withdrawals, and the costs or effort of your chosen custody method.
  • For trading flexibility: Consider whether exchange hours for shares suit you, or whether access to digital-asset markets outside those hours matters. Actual liquidity and access depend on the venue.

The fund’s convenience is not the same as direct ownership, and direct ownership is not automatically safer or cheaper. The choice depends on whether brokerage simplicity or control and network use matters more, and which operational risks you are prepared to manage.
