Keep moisture out of ports, mesh, and other openings, and follow the care instructions for your exact model: manufacturers give different directions for different materials and parts.
Why sweat can damage over-ear headphones
Sweat and other retained moisture can deteriorate some earpad surfaces or headphone casings. Moisture on metal parts can also contribute to corrosion. The degree of risk depends on the headphone’s construction and its manufacturer’s care instructions; no single cleaning method is right for every model.

Sennheiser says its earpads are generally resistant to sweat, but that does not mean every pad or the rest of the headset can be left damp. Sony warns that moisture left on headphones can deteriorate the casing or rust metal parts, and says long-term contact with bodily fluids such as sweat or oil can contribute to earpad cracking or peeling. Sony’s general over-ear headphone care guidance and Sony’s maintenance tips describe those risks.

- Wipe away visible sweat. Use a clean, soft, dry cloth on the earpads, headband, and exterior surfaces. Sennheiser recommends a clean, dry cloth for damp earpads, while AlphaTheta advises wiping the pads and head cushion. Sennheiser’s earpad care advice and AlphaTheta’s cleaning instructions cover their respective products.
- Let them dry fully at room temperature. Leave the headphones somewhere dry and ventilated until the pads and surfaces are no longer damp. Bose likewise advises allowing earpads to air-dry completely in its cleaning guidance.
- Keep liquid away from openings. Do not rinse or pour water over the headphones, and do not let moisture enter charging ports, microphones, mesh, or drivers. Sony specifically says not to rinse its headphones in its WH-1000XM6 care instructions.
- Wait until everything is dry before charging. Sony instructs users to ensure the headphones, USB port area, and cable are dry before connecting them. See its WH-1000XM6 care instructions.
- Store only when dry. Once the headset is fully dry, put it in the supplied case or a protective bag as directed by its maker. Sennheiser says a silica-gel packet may be placed in a case or pouch to absorb extra moisture during storage; it is optional and does not replace wiping and drying the headphones first. Sennheiser’s earpad care advice includes this storage suggestion.
Choose cleaning methods by brand and component
Do not assume a cleaner that is safe for one headset is safe for another. Sony warns against alcohol, thinner, and benzine in its cited guidance. AlphaTheta also warns against alcohol, thinner, benzene, and detergents, while beyerdynamic cautions against harsh or alcohol-based cleaners. Check the instructions for your exact model before using anything beyond a dry cloth.

Some manufacturers give separate directions for different parts of the same headset. Apple’s Beats instructions distinguish how to clean headband cushions, earcups, and mesh; do not apply one component’s method to the others. Refer to Apple’s Beats cleaning instructions before cleaning those models.

Check cushions for peeling, cracking, or other deterioration, especially if they are repeatedly exposed to sweat. If a pad is worn, a replacement designed for the exact headphone model may be appropriate. AlphaTheta describes earpads as consumable parts that can deteriorate and be replaced; confirm compatibility before buying. Common mistakes to avoid
- Putting damp headphones away: retained moisture can affect pads, casing, or metal parts.
- Charging before they are dry: check the headset, port area, and cable first.
- Rinsing or soaking the headset: headphones are not washable; keep liquid away from electronic openings.
- Using alcohol or solvents without checking: manufacturer warnings and material instructions differ.
