How to Choose a Survival Game for Cooperative Base Building

Choose a co-op survival game by checking how your group wants to build, survive, host its world, and play across platforms. Here’s how Valheim, Enshrouded, and Minecraft differ.

Choose a co-op survival game by matching its building style, survival loop, group-size limit, world hosting, and platform compatibility to your group—not by the word “co-op” alone. Valheim is a strong fit for survival progression and customizable bases; Enshrouded supports larger groups and dedicated servers; Minecraft suits groups seeking a shared sandbox or console couch co-op. Check each player’s exact device and edition before buying.

Start with the kind of shared base your group wants

“Base building” can mean anything from making a practical shelter to spending most of a session designing a settlement. Agree on what you want to do together before comparing games.

  • Functional shelter and progression: You want construction to support resource gathering, crafting, exploration, and survival challenges.
  • Open-ended building: You want room to create and decorate, with less emphasis on a required progression path.
  • Defense under attack: You want enemies to threaten the base itself, not just the players. Check this feature specifically; a survival label does not guarantee it.

Then decide how much survival pressure the group wants: resource management, combat, exploration, biome or boss progression, or a more open-ended sandbox. These preferences are more useful than a general claim that one game is “best.” The developers’ feature descriptions do not establish a comparable quality ranking.

Match the game to your group and schedule

Count the players who will join at once

Use the documented multiplayer limit, not the number of people in your wider friend group. Iron Gate says Valheim servers are capped at 10 players; Keen Games says Enshrouded supports up to 16 players in co-op. Confirm current details on the official pages before purchase.

Extinction Point Card Game - Cooperative Sci-Fi Base-Building & Trick-Taking Survival Game with Hidden Traitor Mechanics, 1-4 Players
  • DEFEND THE LAST BUNKER: Earth has fallen to an alien invasion, and a colossal Mothership looms overhead. Work cooperatively as Bunker Leaders to survive relentless attacks, rebuild your settlement, and ultimately destroy the Mothership.
  • A UNIQUE MASHUP OF MECHANICS: Experience a tense, strategic blend of classic trick-taking and desperate base-building. Win tricks to secure vital resources, but be careful—communication is limited, and every card played matters!
  • OUTSMART THE ALIEN SABOTEUR: You aren't alone in the bunker. An automated Infiltrator Deck represents a hidden alien shapeshifter sabotaging your plans. If the Infiltrator wins a trick, the Mothership attacks your defenses!
  • DYNAMIC BASE BUILDING: Visually build your defenses using an innovative card-tucking mechanic. Attach People, Weapons, and Shields to your Buildings to make them operational, increase your armor, and unlock powerful abilities.
  • SOLO OR CO-OP SURVIVAL (1-4 PLAYERS): Features a dedicated, fully-fleshed-out Solo Variant ("The Outpost") for solo gamers, as well as highly replayable co-op for up to 4 players. (The box says 2-4. Solo mode was added after printing.)

Decide whether someone will host each session

A peer-to-peer session can work when the host is available to play. If the world should remain accessible when that player is offline, look for a dedicated-server option and account for its setup or rental requirements. Valheim offers a dedicated-server application, but Iron Gate’s support guide says setting up a persistent server requires some scripting knowledge and may require router configuration. That is a self-hosting option, not an official Iron Gate-hosted world. Enshrouded’s FAQ also describes dedicated servers and names GPortal as an in-game rental partner.

Verify every player’s platform and edition

Availability on multiple platforms does not, by itself, establish cross-play. Check the precise device and game edition for every member of the group before buying. Minecraft’s official multiplayer page describes separate Realms options for Bedrock and Java Edition, and Bedrock couch co-op on console; it is not a complete cross-play compatibility matrix.

Compare the main options

Game Best fit Group and world options Important check
Valheim Groups looking for survival progression, exploration, crafting, and customizable bases. Official FAQ: servers capped at 10 players; private or public peer-to-peer sessions and a dedicated-server application. Self-hosting a persistent dedicated server has a setup burden; confirm platform compatibility for all players.
Enshrouded Larger groups seeking co-op fantasy survival and dedicated-server options. Official FAQ: up to 16 players; dedicated servers can keep a world available when a friend is offline. The FAQ says enemies attack players rather than bases or dwellings at the time of the accessed page. Check current platform availability and whether that behavior has changed.
Minecraft Groups prioritizing a shared sandbox or local console play. Official multiplayer page describes private Realms for Bedrock and Java Edition, plus Bedrock couch co-op on console. Confirm the edition, devices, and multiplayer compatibility the group needs.

What each game offers for cooperative building

Valheim: bases tied to survival progression

Iron Gate describes Valheim as a procedurally generated world built around exploration, crafting, survival, cooperation, and building. Its official materials describe customizable longhouses and bases, building tiers, outposts, farms, crafting stations, biome progression, and boss fights. The appeal is the way a group’s home and infrastructure fit into a broader survival-and-progression loop.

Iron Gate’s FAQ characterizes the game this way: “Valheim is not an MMO, but rather a co-op game meant to be played with a couple of friends.” The FAQ also describes private or public peer-to-peer sessions; for a world that should remain available, the studio provides a dedicated-server application. See the official Valheim page and FAQ and the Valheim support guide for the developer’s current information.

Enshrouded: a higher stated co-op limit, but not a base-raid pick by default

Keen Games describes Enshrouded as online co-op that can also be played solo and offline. Its FAQ says up to 16 players can play together and dedicated servers can keep a world available when a friend is not online. It names GPortal as a partner whose servers can be rented from within the game, while also noting that other providers may be used.

For groups that specifically want enemies to assault their settlement, the FAQ says enemies target players rather than bases or dwellings at the time of the accessed page, while noting this could change after Early Access. The same FAQ says the game launched in Steam Early Access first and that other platforms were planned after completion; check current availability instead of relying on that older plan. Consult the official Enshrouded page and FAQ for current details.

Minecraft: choose the multiplayer mode that fits

Minecraft can suit groups that want a shared sandbox or local play, but its multiplayer modes are not interchangeable. The official page describes Realms as private servers for Bedrock Edition and Java Edition Realms as private servers for Java Edition. It also describes couch co-op with Bedrock Edition on console. Confirm the edition and specific devices your group will use; the page does not provide a full cross-play matrix. See Minecraft’s official multiplayer guide.

Make the decision before anyone buys

  1. Describe the sessions you want. Decide whether building supports survival progression, is the main creative activity, or must include defending a base.
  2. Count simultaneous players. Compare that number with the game’s documented limit, then check the current official FAQ.
  3. Choose a world-availability model. Decide whether a player can host whenever the group plays or whether you need a dedicated server that stays available.
  4. Check compatibility player by player. Record each person’s platform and edition, and confirm that this exact combination supports the multiplayer arrangement you want.
  5. Compare the tradeoffs that matter most. Favor Valheim for its documented survival progression and customizable bases, consider Enshrouded for its stated 16-player co-op limit and dedicated-server options, or choose Minecraft when a shared sandbox or console couch co-op fits the group.
