No single check proves that discounted AirPods are genuine. What you can do before paying is confirm the serial number, match the model and generation to the seller’s claim, check for a mismatch or an existing Apple Account link, and judge whether the seller will stand behind the sale in writing. A failed check is a clear warning. A passed check is useful evidence, but it is not a certificate of authenticity.
What each check can and cannot tell you
Most buyers reach for one check, usually a coverage lookup, and treat the result as the answer. The checks below work together, and each answers a different question.

Apple does not publish a consumer procedure that certifies authenticity from a serial number alone. Treat the steps below as risk reduction, not laboratory verification.

Apple’s serial-number guidance says: “You can find the serial number of your AirPods in the settings of the paired iPhone, iPad, or Mac and on your AirPods.” (Apple Support, Find the serial number of your AirPods.) For the best comparison, read the serial from the device and then from the case.

On an iPhone or iPad
- Pair the AirPods with the device, or ask the seller to have the set paired to it.
- Open Settings and tap Bluetooth.
- Tap the name of the AirPods.
- Tap More Info and note the serial number and model information shown.
On a Mac
- Open System Settings and choose Bluetooth.
- Select the AirPods.
- Open More Info and note the serial number and model information shown.
On the case
For AirPods and AirPods Pro, Apple says the AirPods and the charging case share a serial number, which is printed on the underside of the case lid. The packaging, original receipt or invoice may show the same serial. Apple also says to use the primary number on the case lid when requesting service. If the serial on the case, the packaging and the device settings do not agree, stop and ask the seller to explain before going further.
Confirm the model and generation
Ask the seller for the exact generation and model in writing, not just “AirPods Pro”. The AirPods User Guide says model name, serial number and firmware information can be viewed in the paired device’s settings, and some identifying information is also printed on the AirPods themselves. Use Apple’s guidance on getting information about your AirPods to check that the displayed model matches the claim.

Apple’s September 2025 education contract schedule lists AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Pro 3 as product names (NASPO PSS – Apple Branded_202509). Those names are useful for specifying what you are comparing, but the schedule is not a complete current catalogue, so check Apple’s own product pages for the lineup that applies on the day you buy.

Apple’s View Coverage page in AppleCare and Warranty accepts a serial number and shows coverage and benefits. Use it to see what coverage status the serial reports. Do not read a returned coverage result as proof that the physical product is genuine. The page describes coverage, and the serial it returns still has to be matched against the physical item.

Watch for the Mismatched AirPods alert
Apple documents a “Mismatched AirPods” alert, which can appear when the earbuds and case are different generations, when the AirPods belong to someone else, or when they are still associated with another Apple Account (Apple Support, If you get an alert that says “Mismatched AirPods” or “AirPods Mismatch”).
Different generations
If the earbuds and case belong to different generations, the alert is a compatibility problem. Ask the seller to explain the set’s history and to confirm that the parts were sold together.

Another person’s Apple Account
AirPods still associated with another person’s Apple Account need to be removed from that account before Find My can be used with them. A buyer should not accept a set that remains tied to a previous owner. Require the seller to remove the set from the account before payment, and confirm the change by pairing the set again after it has been removed.
In both cases, the alert is a reason to resolve the issue with the seller or walk away. It is not, by itself, evidence that the product is counterfeit.

Before you pay
- The seller has stated the exact generation and model in writing.
- The serial in the device settings matches the serial printed on the case, the packaging or the receipt.
- The displayed model matches the generation the seller claims.
- No Mismatched AirPods alert appears, or the seller has resolved it before purchase.
- The coverage lookup has been run, with the result understood as coverage information rather than authenticity.
- The seller has given clear return terms that cover the item being not as described.
- The listing, payment record, seller identity and correspondence are saved.
If the seller will not allow these checks, or will not provide clear return terms, you have limited recourse if the product turns out to be misrepresented. In that case, the risk sits with you, and walking away is the sensible choice.
If the item looks counterfeit
Apple provides a form for reporting suspected counterfeit or knockoff products at Apple’s counterfeit or knockoff products page. The form asks for details such as the product or model, the seller, the website and your location. Keep the listing and seller information before you submit, so that the report can be completed with the same details you were shown at the time of purchase.
A report does not return your money. For that, your payment method’s dispute process and the seller’s return terms are the routes that matter, so check them before you buy rather than after.
