Choose a Stellar wallet by starting with the DeFi app you intend to use: confirm it supports that wallet and the signing flow you need before transferring funds. For browser-based Soroban apps, Freighter is a well-documented starting point; LOBSTR may suit users focused on Stellar assets, trustlines, and native DEX features. Neither choice guarantees that a particular protocol is compatible or safe.
Start with the DeFi app you plan to use
Wallet compatibility is specific to the application, not just to the Stellar network. Check the app’s current supported-wallet list, then verify that its connection and transaction-signing flow work with your intended wallet. Stellar’s Wallet Kit names multiple wallet options, but the available documentation does not provide a current, exhaustive matrix for every wallet, DeFi app, and hardware device. Stellar’s wallet integration documentation is a useful ecosystem reference; the target app remains the authority for its own current support.

Before moving a meaningful balance, connect and try the workflow with a small amount. Confirm that you can authorize the actions the app requires, not merely connect an account or view an address.
Check what the wallet must do on Soroban
For a Soroban-based DeFi app, look for support for contract transaction signing and the particular token workflow involved. Stellar’s official Freighter guides document adding Soroban tokens, integrating with dapps, sending Soroban token payments, and signing Soroban XDRs. That makes Freighter a practical browser-based starting point, but it does not establish compatibility with every Soroban application. See the Freighter documentation and verify the dapp’s own requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.
- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Token visibility and protocol support are different things: a wallet may let you manage or display a token without supporting every contract interaction that a DeFi app requires. Check both before depositing assets.
Compare the wallet options by use case
| Option | Documented strengths | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Freighter | Stellar describes it as a non-custodial browser extension for signing Stellar transactions. Its documentation includes Soroban token and dapp workflows. | Confirm the specific DeFi app supports Freighter and the contract actions you intend to sign. Stellar’s Freighter guides are dated July 21, 2026. |
| LOBSTR | LOBSTR documents Stellar asset holding, trustlines, Stellar DEX trading, mobile swaps, and an optional multisignature product called Vault. | Those asset and trading features do not establish support for a particular Soroban protocol. Confirm the target app’s wallet compatibility and signing flow. |
| Scopuly | Stellar’s wallet integration page describes a non-custodial wallet with an open-source browser extension paired with a Scopuly signer on iOS, Android, or macOS. | Check whether the specific app supports this paired setup and whether your chosen signer device is available to you. |
| Ledger or Trezor hardware wallet | Both hardware-wallet brands appear in Stellar’s Wallet Kit. | This does not mean every model, Stellar wallet, or DeFi app works with every device. Confirm the exact wallet, app, device, firmware, and signing flow before relying on it. |
Understand custody, recovery, and signing safeguards
Non-custodial means you are responsible for access to the keys or credentials that authorize transactions. Before choosing, find out where signing occurs, how you regain access if a device is lost, and what information or backup material must be kept secure. A recovery method is useful only if you can follow it later without exposing credentials to someone else.

LOBSTR’s documented key handling
LOBSTR says its secret key is generated on-device, encrypted client-side, downloaded in encrypted form for use on another supported device, and decrypted and used for signing locally. These are the provider’s descriptions of its product, not an independent security audit. LOBSTR also offers Vault, which it describes as using Stellar multisignature and additional keys; understand how those keys and recovery steps work before relying on that setup.

Hardware and multisignature are compatibility choices
A hardware wallet or multisignature arrangement can change how approvals are made, but it adds setup and recovery considerations and does not make a DeFi protocol safe. Confirm that the app supports the exact arrangement and that you understand how to recover access if a device or signer becomes unavailable. Stellar’s Wallet Kit listing is not proof that a specific device combination works end to end.

Separate Stellar asset features from DeFi compatibility
Trustlines let a Stellar account hold particular issued assets, and the Stellar decentralized exchange supports trading on the network. LOBSTR documents trustline management, asset holding, DEX trading, and mobile swaps. These are useful native Stellar asset functions, but they do not by themselves show that LOBSTR can connect to, or sign transactions for, a given Soroban lending, borrowing, or yield app.
Stellar’s DeFi overview discusses borrowing, lending, staking protocols, wallet connections, bridges, oracles, tokenization, and RPC services. It gives Blend as an example of a Stellar lending and borrowing protocol used in a Meru yield-product case study. The overview describes the ecosystem, not an exhaustive wallet-compatibility list. Review the app itself before committing assets.

Use this checklist before funding a wallet
- Choose the app first. Find its current list of supported wallets and any stated network or contract requirements.
- Match the required signing flow. For Soroban, confirm contract signing and the token workflow the app uses, rather than assuming basic Stellar transaction support is enough.
- Check your device setup. Confirm browser, mobile, desktop, paired-signer, or hardware-wallet requirements for the exact app and wallet combination.
- Review custody and recovery. Learn where keys are stored or used, how access is restored, and what you must protect.
- Test cautiously. Connect and try the relevant action with a small amount before transferring more.
- Evaluate the protocol separately. A wallet authorizes transactions; it does not guarantee protocol security, protect against every mistake, or promise returns.
