Open the Steam Store page for the exact visual novel, scroll to System Requirements, and compare its listed operating system and hardware with your PC. There is no single PC specification that applies to all visual novels: the requirements are specific to each game.
1. Find the game’s requirements on Steam
Open the Store page for the title you want to play and locate System Requirements. Note the requirements under Minimum and, if shown, Recommended. Check only the fields the developer lists; these can include:

- Operating system and whether 32-bit or 64-bit Windows is required
- Processor (CPU)
- Memory (RAM)
- Graphics hardware (GPU), graphics memory, or shader requirements
- Available storage
- DirectX version, resolution, or other game-specific notes
Check operating-system compatibility as well as hardware. Steam advises checking a game’s hardware requirements in addition to its compatible operating systems, and notes that 64-bit Windows is a common requirement to watch for. Steam supports multiple platform families overall, but that does not mean every game supports every platform.
2. Find your PC’s operating system and specifications
Check Windows and basic device information
In Windows, open Settings > System > About to see basic device and Windows information. Compare the Windows edition or version and system type with the game’s listing. The system type can tell you whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Use DirectX Diagnostic Tool for processor and graphics details
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Enter
dxdiagand press Enter. If prompted to check whether drivers are digitally signed, choose the option to continue. - On the System tab, review information such as your processor, memory, and installed DirectX version.
- Open the Display tab to review the graphics device information. If your PC has more than one display or graphics device, check which device the game is likely to use.
Check available storage in Windows as well: compare the game’s listed storage requirement with the free space on the drive where you plan to install it. The DirectX version shown by dxdiag is useful information, but it does not by itself establish that a graphics card meets every game-specific graphics requirement.
3. Compare each requirement with the matching PC detail
| Steam listing | What to compare on your PC |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Your Windows version or other listed platform; check any stated 32-bit or 64-bit requirement. |
| CPU | Your processor model and, where the game specifies it, its generation or performance class. |
| RAM | Installed memory, not storage space. |
| Graphics | Your graphics adapter and any stated GPU model, graphics-memory, DirectX, or shader requirement. |
| Storage | Free space on the drive where you will install the game. |
| Other notes | Any listed resolution, architecture, or title-specific condition. |
Compare minimum with minimum first. Meeting or exceeding every listed minimum means your PC appears to meet the developer-published baseline; it is not a guarantee of smooth play. Recommended requirements are a separate, higher target when the listing provides them. If your PC is between the minimum and recommended specifications, identify the component that falls short rather than treating the result as a definite yes or no.

4. Interpret graphics and driver information cautiously
Do not treat a matching DirectX version as proof that the GPU is compatible. Steam explains that a video card can meet a game’s minimum DirectX requirement yet fail an advanced pixel-shader requirement. Compare the graphics hardware and any shader details the game actually lists.
Drivers matter too: Steam warns that outdated drivers can affect performance even when video hardware meets or exceeds a game’s requirements. If the hardware appears sufficient but the game has problems, check for an updated graphics driver from the PC or graphics-card manufacturer’s official support channel.

Why one visual novel’s requirements do not predict another’s
Individual Steam listings illustrate why a genre-wide rule would be misleading. The Steam listing for STEINS;GATE specifies minimums including 4 GB RAM and 13 GB of available storage, and requires 1280×720 or better; it recommends 1920×1080. Its listing also gives separate minimum and recommended CPU and graphics entries. These are requirements for that title, not a standard for visual novels, and its legacy operating-system text should not be read as a current statement of Steam client support.
By contrast, the Steam support page for Katawa Shoujo lists 512 MB RAM and 600 MB storage as minimums for its Windows listing. That is likewise specific to the named title and is not a proxy for newer, higher-resolution, or otherwise different games. The practical answer to “Can my PC run this game?” depends on the exact game’s current listing and your exact PC specifications.
