Keep a small brush or cloth near your coffee setup, put spent espresso pucks straight into a knock box, and empty your machine’s removable grounds container and drip tray before they fill up. The right fix depends on where the mess starts: grinder scatter, a portafilter puck, or a machine tray that needs emptying.
Start with the source of the mess
Different parts of a coffee setup create different kinds of counter mess. A grinder can leave loose grounds around its hopper or chute; an espresso portafilter leaves a compact spent puck; and an automatic machine can spill grounds or water if its removable container or tray is neglected. Deal with the relevant part rather than expecting one accessory to handle every problem.

| Mess source | What to do | Evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Machine grounds container or drip tray | Empty and clean the removable parts as directed by the machine manual; dry them before reinstalling. | Bosch and JennAir give model-specific care guidance. Follow the instructions for your own machine. |
| Grinder scatter or grounds sticking inside | Check the grinder’s own cleaning instructions for the hopper, grounds passage, and removable parts. | KitchenAid describes this for the relevant grinder; those steps should not be assumed to fit other models. |
| Spent espresso puck | Knock it into a knock box positioned beside the machine. | A knock box is designed for puck disposal, not grinder scatter or machine overflow. |
| Stray grounds on the work surface | Brush or wipe them up as part of finishing the brew; optionally gather them on a mat or tray beneath the station. | Mat and tray use is anecdotal; the sources do not establish spill resistance or comparative performance. |
Keep an automatic machine’s tray and grounds container from overflowing
Empty removable containers before they become overfull, and clean them according to the machine’s manual. For the countertop espresso machines covered by its support guidance, Bosch recommends daily cleaning: “For optimal results, we recommend emptying and cleaning your drip tray and coffee grounds container daily to prevent unwanted deposits.” Bosch also advises wiping the parts with a soft damp cloth and reinstalling them once dry. Read Bosch’s instructions.

Check your model’s manual for the correct care routine. JennAir describes a specific chain that can lead to a mess: grounds may spill into the drip tray if the grounds container is not regularly emptied and cleaned, and an unemptied drip tray can overflow. Check the grinder when grounds escape
If grounds keep sticking or appearing around the grinder, inspect its hopper, chute, and grounds-catching parts using that grinder’s own instructions. KitchenAid says natural oils from coffee beans can build up in the lower hopper and cause grounds to stick. Its guidance for the relevant grinder covers cleaning removable components and using the supplied brush on the grounds passage. Follow KitchenAid’s model-specific steps; do not apply its disassembly or cleaning instructions to a different grinder without checking that model’s manual.
A small brush or cloth within reach makes it easier to clear stray grounds while finishing the brew. The brush detail here is grounded in KitchenAid’s instructions for its grinder; using a brush for general counter cleanup is practical advice, not a claim that one brush suits every grinder or surface.

Use a knock box for spent espresso pucks
With a portafilter setup, place a knock box near the espresso machine and knock each spent puck into it instead of carrying loose grounds across the counter. De’Longhi identifies its large stainless-steel DLSC072 as a knock box for used coffee grounds; the product page describes a removable bar for emptying and cleaning and a non-slip base. These are the manufacturer’s product details, not independent performance findings. See the De’Longhi DLSC072.
A knock box solves a narrow problem: collecting the puck from the portafilter. It will not prevent a grinder from scattering grounds or stop an automatic machine’s drip tray from overflowing.

Decide whether a mat or tray is worth using
Some coffee-station users place a mat or tray beneath their equipment so loose grounds land on a removable surface that can be gathered or wiped. That is anecdotal practice, not comparative evidence. The available sources do not establish which material works best, whether a mat prevents liquid spills, or whether a tray protects a particular countertop finish. Treat it as an optional cleanup aid, not a spill-proof barrier.

A short cleanup routine
- After brewing, brush or wipe visible grounds from the work area.
- For a grinder mess, consult the grinder’s manual and clean only the parts and passages it identifies.
- For an automatic machine, empty and clean its grounds container and drip tray at the interval its manual specifies; dry cleaned components before reinstalling when instructed.
- For espresso, knock the spent puck into the nearby knock box.
- If you use a mat or tray, lift or remove it to gather grounds and clean the surface beneath as needed; do not assume it contains liquid.
