How to Choose a Stealth Action Game if You Like Metal Gear Solid

Start with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain if you want the closest mechanical follow-up to Metal Gear Solid: open mission spaces, scouting, flexible equipment and the ability to improvise when a plan fails. Choose Hitman: World of Assassination for disguises and replayable social stealth, Splinter Cell for tightly directed covert operations, or Dishonored 2 and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided if you want powers or augmentations to reshape stealth. The right choice depends less on the word “stealth” than on whether you value military infiltration, identity-based deception, authored missions, systemic experimentation or Metal Gear’s own story.

The short answer

“A game like Metal Gear Solid” can mean several different things. You might want open-ended infiltration, a strong espionage plot, gadgets, camouflage, non-lethal play, elaborate enemy reactions or simply the feeling of solving a guarded space your own way. No single alternative reproduces all of those qualities.

Open planning, reconnaissance and recovery after detection Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Its open mission spaces and adaptable tools provide the closest overall mechanical match.

Disciplined, carefully executed espionage missions Splinter Cell Its more directed covert-operations structure rewards controlled concealment.

Which parts of Metal Gear Solid do you want to keep?

Before choosing a title, identify the particular pleasure you are trying to preserve. This prevents a common disappointment: buying a highly regarded stealth game that solves stealth through a completely different language.

Physical concealment and exposure

In a traditional Metal Gear approach, your position, movement, noise and visibility determine whether guards discover you. You scout, select a route, use equipment and manage the consequences of being seen. Games that share this emphasis will feel immediately familiar even when their stories and level designs differ.

  • GAME:TRUST INSTINCT BATTLE: Outsmart enemies with camouflage, short circuit battle, stalking, interviewing, climbing, hunting and injury treatment
  • SETTING: BATTLE OF REPADS JOUNGLES: Measure yourself with the environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats law in the shadow, and noises alert predators

Improvisation after a plan breaks

Some stealth games assume that a clean plan is the ideal outcome and make detection a severe failure. Others let you adapt: relocate, distract, hide, change equipment or complete the objective under pressure. If your favorite moments involve recovering from an alarm rather than reloading instantly, prioritize games with broader tactical spaces and flexible tools.

Identity-based stealth

Disguises create a different problem. Instead of asking only “Can the guard see me?”, you must ask whether the guard recognizes your clothing, questions your behavior or has access to an area restricted to another role. This is social stealth, and it is central to Hitman: World of Assassination rather than to Metal Gear’s camouflage-and-movement model.

Systems, powers and alternate routes

Metal Gear equipment is generally framed as field gear. Other games let abilities change the physical rules of a level: supernatural movement can bypass a wall, while augmentations or dialogue can open a route that would otherwise require combat. Choose these games when experimentation matters more than reproducing a military setting.

Directed espionage versus sandbox experimentation

A mission can be a carefully authored operation with a preferred rhythm, or a broad play space where the developer supplies opportunities and you decide how to combine them. Both can be stealth games, but they produce different pacing. Decide whether you want a sequence of covert assignments or a location you can revisit to test new ideas.

How the main alternatives compare

Game Mission shape Stealth emphasis Distinctive feature Best fit
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Open mission spaces Physical concealment, scouting and adaptable tools Improvisational infiltration Closest overall mechanical match
Hitman: World of Assassination Replayable sandboxes Disguises, planning and social stealth Multiple identities and elaborate opportunities Experimentation and replay value
Splinter Cell Directed covert operations Disciplined concealment and careful execution Focused espionage structure Controlled stealth challenge
Dishonored 2 Systemic levels with vertical routes Physical stealth plus supernatural powers Creative traversal and interacting systems Unexpected solutions
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Directed areas with multiple solutions Concealment and augmentations Stealth role-playing choices and conversation Abilities and dialogue
Sniper Elite 5 Broad tactical areas Reconnaissance and suppressed shooting Observation and distance Patient marksman play
Ghost of Tsushima Large historical action world Stealth within a broader action game Exploration and cinematic setting Atmosphere plus optional infiltration
Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater Directed survival-stealth campaign Camouflage, survival and close-quarters combat Metal Gear continuity The series’ own story

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain — the closest mechanical match

Why it fits

The Phantom Pain is the clearest choice when what you miss is the act of planning an infiltration and then adapting it in real time. Open mission spaces give you room to approach objectives from different directions. Scouting helps you understand the situation before committing, while a broad set of tools lets you change tactics when the original route is no longer safe.

That flexibility is the important similarity. The game does not require every operation to remain perfect from the first move. You can treat an unexpected guard, a changed patrol or an alarm as a tactical problem rather than an automatic restart. This makes it the strongest recommendation for players who describe Metal Gear primarily as a toolbox-driven stealth game.

Where it is not a substitute

It is still a particular entry with its own campaign structure and emphasis. If your favorite Metal Gear moments were tightly choreographed story sequences, close-quarters set pieces or the specific continuity of earlier games, mechanical similarity alone may not satisfy you. Select it for the play style first, not as a promise that every narrative feature will return in the same form.

Choose it if

  • You want to scout before acting and improvise after detection.
  • You prefer broad mission spaces to a single prescribed route.
  • You enjoy combining equipment and changing plans in the field.

Hitman: World of Assassination — stealth through identity and deception

Why it fits

Hitman: World of Assassination is the right answer when “stealth” means entering a guarded environment under a false identity, learning how people and routines interact, and turning the location itself into an opportunity. Its missions are replayable sandboxes: the same place can support different disguises, plans and outcomes on later attempts.

  • ERA: THE 1960'S BATTLE OF IDEOLOGIES: Relive history as the Cold War and geo-political landscape change
  • GAMEPLAY: SURVIVAL BATTLE OF INSTINCTS: Outsmart enemies with camouflage, close-quarters combat, stalking, interrogating, climbing, hunting and treating injuries
  • SETTING: THE JUNGLE BATTLE OF REPTILES: Pit yourself against an environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats lurk in the shadows and noises alert predators

The game’s freeform design rewards observation and experimentation. You can study a target’s routine, discover an opportunity, try an unusual disguise or deliberately test how far a particular identity will carry you. Replay value comes from finding new possibilities rather than merely repeating a solved route.

How its stealth differs from Metal Gear

Identity is the central resource. A disguise may let you pass one group while failing in another, and suspicious behavior can matter as much as visibility. This is not simply Metal Gear camouflage transferred to a different setting. If you want military concealment, patrol avoidance and field gadgets, the difference may feel substantial; if you enjoy deception and elaborate setups, it may be exactly what you are looking for.

Choose it if

  • You want to replay a location to discover more opportunities.
  • You enjoy disguises, routines and social access rules.
  • You prefer constructing an elaborate solution to following a fixed mission script.

Splinter Cell — the disciplined covert-operations option

Why it fits

Splinter Cell suits players who want stealth to feel deliberate, controlled and operational. Its directed covert-operations structure places more emphasis on careful execution than on the broad improvisational sandbox associated with The Phantom Pain. The challenge is to manage concealment, movement and timing with discipline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This makes it a useful counterpoint to games that allow a chaotic recovery. You are encouraged to read the mission, commit to a careful approach and preserve control of the situation. The satisfaction comes from completing a demanding operation cleanly, not necessarily from turning every mistake into a new experiment.

How to decide between it and The Phantom Pain

Choose Splinter Cell when authored mission flow is a benefit. Choose The Phantom Pain when you want space to invent your own route and recover through a changing tactical situation. Both support covert play, but their structures ask you to think differently about preparation and failure.

Choose it if

  • You prefer focused espionage assignments to broad sandboxes.
  • You enjoy careful execution and controlled concealment.
  • You want detection to feel like a serious operational consequence.

Dishonored 2 — supernatural stealth and vertical experimentation

Why it fits

Dishonored 2 expands stealth beyond conventional equipment. Its systemic levels include vertical routes and supernatural powers, so movement and problem-solving can change the shape of a mission. A guarded position is not only something to sneak past; it is a puzzle whose geometry and interacting systems can be exploited.

This is a strong choice for players who remember enjoying Metal Gear’s gadgets but want those tools to have a more radical effect on traversal. You can experiment with routes and combinations, accept an unexpected result and learn how the level responds. The emphasis is creative agency rather than military authenticity.

What to expect if you come from Metal Gear

The powers alter the balance between planning and execution. Instead of relying mainly on reconnaissance, camouflage and conventional distractions, you may solve a problem by changing how you move through the space. That can feel liberating, but it also means the game is not a straight replacement for a realistic infiltration simulator.

  • SETTING: THE JUNGLE BATTLE OF REPTILES: Pit yourself against an environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats lurk in the shadows and noises alert predators

Choose it if

  • You want stealth routes that go above, below and around the obvious path.
  • You enjoy supernatural abilities interacting with level systems.
  • You would rather discover an unexpected solution than reproduce a military procedure.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided — stealth as role-playing choice

Why it fits

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided combines concealment with augmentations, conversations and meaningful lethal or non-lethal alternatives. Missions offer multiple routes, and the character’s abilities can influence which routes are practical. Stealth is therefore part of a larger role-playing decision: how you build capability, whom you persuade and what consequences you accept.

This makes it especially suitable if you want the problem-solving side of Metal Gear but also want dialogue and character choices to affect the operation. A locked area may be approached through physical infiltration, an ability, a conversation or a more forceful option. The game’s variety comes from the interaction of those choices.

How it differs from a pure stealth game

You are not selecting only between “hidden” and “detected.” You are also choosing a role, a set of augmentations and a response to the people you meet. Players who want a tightly focused stealth challenge may find that breadth distracting; players who enjoy building a capable operative will find more room for personal style.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if

  • You want augmentations to open or reshape routes.
  • You value conversations alongside infiltration.
  • You want lethal and non-lethal approaches to coexist in the same campaign.

Sniper Elite 5 — reconnaissance, distance and suppressed fire

Why it fits

Sniper Elite 5 is the specialist recommendation for players whose favorite Metal Gear skill is patient observation. Broad tactical areas give you room to study positions, plan a line of approach and use distance to control the engagement. Reconnaissance and suppressed shooting are central rather than secondary conveniences.

The pace is consequently more deliberate. You spend time understanding the area and deciding when a shot is worth taking. The stealth challenge is often about maintaining separation and controlling information, not slipping through a crowded interior under a disguise.

Its limits as a Metal Gear alternative

If you want a wide gadget roster, close-quarters infiltration and frequent improvisational movement, this may feel narrower. Select it for the marksman perspective: observation, range and a carefully managed firing solution.

Choose it if

  • You enjoy surveying an area before committing.
  • You prefer distance and suppressed shooting to close-quarters sneaking.
  • You want tactical objectives that reward patience.

Ghost of Tsushima — stealth inside a larger action world

Why it fits

Ghost of Tsushima places stealth within a large historical action adventure. Infiltration is available, but exploration, atmosphere and direct combat remain important parts of the experience. It is therefore a good choice when you want the mood and setting of a cinematic journey without requiring every encounter to be solved covertly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its appeal is breadth. You can move through a substantial world, engage with its historical setting and decide when stealth is appropriate. That makes it less specialized than Metal Gear and more comfortable for players who want an action game with stealth as one of several approaches.

  • You do not require every mission to enforce covert play.

Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater — choose continuity, not a neighboring formula

What it is

Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater is a remake of the 2004 game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. That distinction matters: it is the continuity choice for someone who wants Metal Gear’s own characters, themes and survival-stealth identity, rather than a different series borrowing selected mechanics.

The experience combines stealth with survival in an alternate Cold War setting. Camouflage and close-quarters combat are both part of the approach, so the game sits closer to the series’ own identity than the other recommendations in this guide.

Availability and buying caveat

The announced platforms recorded for the game are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Steam, with a stated release date of 28 August 2025. Because editions, prices, retailer stock and platform listings can change by region, verify the current store page and edition contents before buying. A listing described as “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater for PS5” is the most direct match when you specifically want the PlayStation version.

Choose it if

  • You want the series’ own continuity and character history.
  • You value camouflage, survival systems and close-quarters combat.
  • You want a Metal Gear experience rather than a reinterpretation of its stealth ideas.

A practical decision guide

  1. Ask whether the story or the mechanics come first. For Metal Gear continuity, choose Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater. For the closest mechanical follow-up, choose The Phantom Pain.
  2. Choose your preferred form of concealment. Pick Hitman for disguises and social access, Splinter Cell for disciplined physical concealment, or Sniper Elite 5 for reconnaissance and distance.
  3. Decide how much reality you want. Dishonored 2 introduces supernatural powers; Deus Ex: Mankind Divided uses augmentations and dialogue; the other choices stay closer to conventional espionage or action.
  4. Decide how much stealth must be mandatory. If you want stealth to define the mission, favor The Phantom Pain, Splinter Cell, Hitman or Sniper Elite 5. If you want to alternate between infiltration and open combat, Ghost of Tsushima is the broader fit.
  5. Consider your tolerance for repetition. Hitman gains much of its value from replaying locations and testing new opportunities. If you would rather continue through new operations than revisit a sandbox, a directed campaign may suit you better.

Good follow-up paths after a Metal Gear game

After The Phantom Pain

Move to Hitman if you want to keep the freedom to test different plans, but are willing to replace military infiltration with identity and deception. Move to Splinter Cell if you want the opposite adjustment: less sandbox improvisation and more controlled covert execution.

After an older, story-focused Metal Gear

Choose Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater to remain inside the series’ chronology and tone. Choose Deus Ex: Mankind Divided if the appeal was the combination of stealth, dialogue and competing methods rather than Metal Gear continuity itself.

After enjoying gadgets more than gunplay

Dishonored 2 is the most radical next step because abilities can transform traversal and produce solutions that conventional gear cannot. Hitman is the better alternative if the gadget-like pleasure came from setting up elaborate opportunities inside a living location.

After preferring patience and reconnaissance

Try Sniper Elite 5. Its emphasis on observation, distance and suppressed shooting preserves the deliberate preparation that many players associate with a successful Metal Gear infiltration, while changing the viewpoint and engagement range.

Common mismatches to avoid

  • Buying Hitman for military stealth. Its core question is often whether your identity and behavior fit an area, not simply whether a guard can see your body.
  • Buying Splinter Cell for open-ended sandbox play. Its directed covert-operations structure is a feature, not a missing setting.
  • Buying Dishonored 2 for realism. Its supernatural powers intentionally change the rules of movement and concealment.
  • Buying Deus Ex only for uninterrupted stealth. Augmentations, conversations and lethal alternatives are part of the design.
  • Buying Ghost of Tsushima expecting a dedicated stealth campaign. Stealth sits alongside exploration and direct combat in a larger action world.
  • Buying Delta expecting a new neighboring franchise. It is a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and is best understood as a return to Metal Gear’s own continuity.

Final recommendation

For most Metal Gear fans, begin with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain because it preserves the series’ most transferable mechanical strengths: scouting, open mission spaces, adaptable tools and recovery when plans change. If disguises and repeatable experiments sound more appealing than camouflage, choose Hitman: World of Assassination. Choose Splinter Cell for disciplined espionage, Dishonored 2 for supernatural systems, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided for augmentations and dialogue, Sniper Elite 5 for reconnaissance and distance, or Ghost of Tsushima for stealth within a broader historical adventure. When the priority is the characters and continuity of Metal Gear itself, choose Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater.
