For frequent direct-sun use, start with the watch’s display: a sunlight-visible transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) screen is designed to use reflected ambient light, making it a strong option for quick outdoor glances. If you prefer a colorful AMOLED display, check the specific watch’s brightness, text-size, always-on, and wake settings before choosing it.
Start with display technology
Garmin describes its Chroma display as using reflected ambient light and natural sunlight as primary light sources. It says the display becomes clearer as those light sources get brighter, without affecting battery life; that is Garmin’s claim about its technology, not an independent comparison or a guarantee for every MIP screen. A concrete example is the Garmin Instinct 2X Solar: Garmin’s specifications identify its display as monochrome, sunlight-visible, and transflective MIP. AMOLED may suit you better if colorful presentation matters, especially for mixed indoor and outdoor use. But display type alone does not establish which watch will be easiest to read outside: Garmin’s comparison pages include both AMOLED and MIP models, and the available sources do not provide controlled, cross-brand outdoor legibility tests. Check the settings that affect legibility
Brightness and text size
Look for brightness controls and ways to enlarge text or make it bolder. Garmin documents brightness and text-size settings for the Forerunner 570. Apple likewise documents brightness, text size, and Bold Text controls for Apple Watch in Display & Brightness. Availability and exact menu labels depend on the model and software version. Always-on behavior
“Always On” does not necessarily mean that the face stays at full brightness. On the Forerunner 570, Garmin says Always On keeps face data visible while reducing brightness and background. For Apple Watch, Apple notes that Always On is unavailable in Low Power Mode. Check the settings for the watch and software version you intend to use rather than assuming always-on visibility is available in every power mode. Apple Watch display accessibility settings.
Choose a face layout for the information you need
A display can be bright and still hard to scan if the face is crowded. For workouts or navigation, make the time and the one or two metrics you check most prominent; avoid burying them among less useful fields. Increase text size if the watch supports it. These are practical layout choices, not a measured formula: the cited manuals confirm that some models offer text-size controls, but they do not establish an optimal number of fields or font size.

Compare candidate watches before buying
Use the same questions for each model so you compare real-world behavior, not just display labels:
- Display: Is it sunlight-visible transflective MIP, AMOLED, or another type, and what does the manufacturer specifically say about daylight use?
- Legibility controls: Can you change brightness, increase text size, or enable bold text?
- Always-on and wake behavior: Does information remain visible, dim, or require a wrist gesture or button press?
- Battery trade-off: Does the manufacturer say always-on or brightness settings affect battery life? Use guidance for that exact model; do not transfer estimates from another watch.
- Face layout: Can you make the time and the outdoor information you rely on easy to scan?
For direct sun and instant glances, prioritize a model whose manufacturer identifies its display as sunlight-visible and check whether the face remains visible without a gesture. For an Apple Watch, try the Display & Brightness controls for brightness, text size, and Bold Text, and account for the Low Power Mode limitation on Always On.
