The best lighting for a video call is soft light in front of you, near camera level—not a bright window behind you. Start by facing a window; if daylight is unreliable or unavailable, add a dimmable soft light and adjust it using your camera preview. Aim for a clear, natural-looking face, not maximum brightness.
How to achieve good lighting for video calls
Set up the light before changing camera filters or buying equipment. These steps work for Zoom, FaceTime, Webex, and other video-call apps because they address the light reaching your camera.
- Try daylight first. Sit facing a window so it lights your face. A window behind you can leave your face dark because the camera is exposed for the brighter background. Daylight is free, but its strength and direction change over the day. Elgato’s video-conferencing setup guide recommends considering window placement and checking the image before a call.
- Put the main light near the camera direction. A soft source around face level, just above or beside the camera, generally keeps your face visible. Directly centered light can flatten facial features; move it a little to one side for gentle depth while keeping the light soft. Webex’s lighting guide also describes an optional key-and-fill arrangement to reduce strong shadows.
- Adjust using the camera image. Open your system camera or the meeting app’s preview. Raise light only until your face is easy to see. If your skin looks washed out, reduce brightness, soften the source, or move it off-center. A bright background should not overpower your face.
- Check color and competing room lights. BenQ suggests 4000K–5000K as a neutral-white starting range for video calls, not a universal requirement. Room colors, other lights, and your camera’s rendering affect the result, so judge the actual preview rather than relying on a number alone. BenQ’s guide discusses color temperature, glare, and lighting options; it is vendor-authored and includes iMac-specific product discussion.
- Inspect the setup before joining. Look for an evenly lit face, readable detail, reflections in glasses, and a background that is not much brighter than you. Make any changes in the preview before the meeting starts. Elgato also recommends a pre-call preview in its guide to looking more professional on video calls.
Which type of light is best for video conferencing?
Choose based on whether you need to light your face, illuminate your desk, or work around limited space. No single light type is best for every room.

When comparing options, consider dimming, softness, mounting compatibility, desk footprint, camera position, and reflections in glasses. Check whether the product is intended to light your face or your workspace: a bright desk does not necessarily mean your face will be well lit.

If you need to buy a light
If a window cannot provide stable front light, look for a soft key light or LED panel with brightness control. A search phrase such as “dimmable LED video call key light” describes the practical need without implying that a particular model is best. Elgato recommends soft face-level light when daylight is unavailable, while BenQ discusses key lights and panels as facial-lighting options. The cited guides do not establish a head-to-head product winner.

- Your face is too dark: Add soft light in front of you, move to face a window, or reduce the brighter light behind you by changing seats or closing curtains.
- Your face looks washed out: Lower brightness, soften the source, or move it slightly away from the camera axis.
- Your glasses reflect the light: Move the light off the camera axis, reduce its brightness, or diffuse it. Ring lights close to the camera line can be especially noticeable in glasses.
- One side of your face has a strong shadow: Move the main light closer to center or add a softer fill on the darker side. A second light is optional, not a basic requirement.
- Your desk is bright but your face is dark: A monitor light bar is principally for workspace illumination. Add or reposition a face-level light if backlighting is still leaving your face underexposed.
