Choose a battery-powered smart lock with a local way to enter—such as a keypad, mechanical key, or nearby Bluetooth—and treat remote app access as a separate feature. During an internet outage, local unlocking may still work even when remote control, status updates, notifications, or settings do not. Before buying, check the exact model’s offline behavior, battery fallback, door fit, and any hub or security-system requirements.
What “works without internet” should mean
A smart lock can still operate at the door while losing some or all of its connected features. The useful question is not simply whether a product “works offline,” but which actions it can perform locally and which depend on Wi-Fi, internet access, a bridge, or an ecosystem.

For example, Google says the Nest × Yale keypad continues to work without Wi-Fi, but app control and settings changes are unavailable. Keypad
A keypad lets you enter a code at the door without needing a phone in your hand. Confirm whether existing codes are stored and checked locally, and whether creating or changing codes requires an internet connection. Those details vary by model; do not assume that a keypad guarantees offline code management.

Mechanical key
A physical key is a separate, non-digital fallback if the lock includes one. Keep the key somewhere accessible without relying on the lock’s app. Some smart locks, including Nest × Yale, do not have a physical key, so check the product’s entry options before purchase.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth can allow a nearby phone to communicate directly with the lock when Wi-Fi or internet is unavailable. It still depends on having a compatible, charged phone within range. Wyze says its lock can be unlocked with a key or manual Bluetooth commands during Wi-Fi loss, but Auto-Unlock does not work offline. Yale also documents local Bluetooth use for Zuri. More than one local method
If you want a fallback that does not depend on one person’s phone or memory of a code, look for a model with multiple local entry options. Aqara lists keypad passcodes, physical-key entry, and offline passwords for its B50. Verify how offline passwords work and whether they can be issued or changed without a connection. Check what an outage disables
Make a short feature list before choosing a model, then confirm each item in its manual or official support page. A lock that opens locally may still be unable to:
- unlock remotely through an app;
- show current lock status or send notifications;
- change settings or issue new access while disconnected;
- run an automation that depends on a cloud service, bridge, or internet connection.

Plan separately for dead batteries
Internet loss and battery exhaustion are different problems. A lock may retain local entry during a network outage but still need a battery fallback when its power runs low or runs out. Check the exact model’s required battery type, low-battery warning, emergency-power procedure, and whether it has a mechanical key.
Aqara lists four AA batteries and a USB-C emergency charging port for the B50. For the U100, Aqara’s undated FAQ gives an average battery-life estimate of 8 months, measured with LR6 AA batteries under simulated use of 8 openings and 8 auto-lockings per day at 25°C. Verify fit, setup, and regional requirements
Offline entry will not help if the lock does not fit the door or cannot be installed with the system you have. Check the current manual and product support page for:
- door preparation, supported lock type, and any required measurements;
- regional model and availability, including supported Wi-Fi band where applicable;
- whether a hub, bridge, or existing security system is needed for installation or connected features;
- how to enroll, change, or revoke access codes when internet service is unavailable.
