How to Choose a Small E-Reader for Books, PDFs, and Note-Taking

A 6-inch reader prioritizes portability and ebooks; stylus notes and dense PDFs call for a larger, compatible screen. Compare the trade-offs before choosing.

For ordinary ebooks and maximum portability, a 6-inch reader is the compact choice. If you also want to write on books or PDFs, look at a stylus-compatible model such as Kobo’s 7-inch Libra Colour. For frequent work with dense PDFs or substantial handwriting, a larger screen—such as the 10.3-inch Kobo Elipsa 2E—offers more room, at the cost of portability. The right size depends on which job matters most: reading, viewing fixed-layout documents, or writing.

Start with what you need the screen to do

“Supports PDF” and “comfortable for PDFs” are different claims. A reflowable ebook adjusts its text to the display; a fixed-layout PDF preserves its page design. On a small screen, a full PDF page may require zooming and panning, particularly when it contains small text or complex layouts. Kobo lists PDF among the Clara BW’s supported formats, but that does not establish how comfortably every PDF reads at 6 inches.

Handwriting is another separate requirement. A device can show ebooks and PDFs without supporting a stylus, and stylus support can depend on both the model and the file. Decide whether you want to annotate books, mark up PDFs, write in a separate notebook, or do all three.

Compare the compact and larger Kobo options

Kobo’s current product catalogue gives a useful size range for comparing reading-first devices with models that support writing. Screen diagonal is a specification, not a complete measure of a device’s overall footprint.

Model Screen Color and stylus Best fit and trade-off
Kobo Clara BW 6 inches Monochrome; not listed as stylus-compatible Compact, reading-first use. PDF is a supported format, but that does not guarantee comfortable reading of dense pages at this size.
Kobo Clara Colour 6 inches Color; not listed as stylus-compatible A compact choice if color covers or illustrations matter more than handwriting.
Kobo Libra Colour 7 inches Color; compatible with the separately purchased Kobo Stylus 2 A portability-and-annotation compromise, with more screen area than a 6-inch Clara but less than larger writing-oriented models.
Kobo Sage 8 inches Monochrome; listed as stylus-compatible A stylus-enabled step up in size from the Libra Colour; no longer a 6-inch compact reader.
Kobo Elipsa 2E 10.3 inches Monochrome; Kobo says the stylus is included The largest, writing-oriented option in this group, with more room for documents and handwriting but less pocketability.

These screen sizes and feature details come from Kobo’s product catalogue and its stylus compatibility guidance. Kobo’s catalogue lists regional U.S. prices, but prices and inventory can change and vary by country; check the live listing for your region before buying.

Choose a size based on your reading and writing mix

Pick 6 inches for pocketability and ordinary ebooks

If you mainly read reflowable books and want a small device, the Clara BW is the monochrome option; the Clara Colour adds color if covers and illustrations are important. Kobo lists the Clara BW as supporting 15 native file formats, including PDF, but file support alone says nothing about how legible a particular fixed-layout page will be at this size. Neither Clara model is listed by Kobo as stylus-compatible, so do not choose one expecting handwriting on books or PDFs.

Pick 7 inches for portable reading with markup

The Libra Colour is the middle ground if you want color and stylus features without moving to a 10.3-inch device. Kobo says it supports Stylus 2 markups, color highlights, and integrated notebooks. The stylus is sold separately, according to Kobo’s comparison information. This is a compromise in portability and writing area, not a 6-inch pocket reader.

Consider 8 or 10.3 inches for frequent documents and handwriting

The 8-inch Sage is another stylus-compatible choice, while the 10.3-inch Elipsa 2E provides the most screen room among these models and includes its stylus, according to Kobo’s catalogue. A larger display gives a fixed-layout page more room than a 6- or 7-inch screen, but available specifications do not establish a universal minimum size for comfortable PDF reading. Your document’s layout and your tolerance for zooming and panning still matter.

Check file and stylus compatibility before buying

Kobo’s support page lists the Stylus as compatible with Sage, Elipsa, Elipsa 2E, and Libra Colour. It says users can make notes on ePub, Kobo ePub, and non-protected PDF files. Do not assume that every PDF, protected document, or ebook format will accept handwritten notes, or that stylus support extends to the Clara models.

For the Clara BW’s supported-format list, see Kobo’s Clara BW product page. For which devices and file types support notes, see Kobo’s Stylus compatibility guidance. If you rely on transferring your own books or documents, verify that your specific file type and any copy protection work with the model and workflow you plan to use.

Use these questions to make the final choice

  • Are most of your books reflowable ebooks? A 6-inch model is the compact reading-first direction.
  • Do you need color, or handwriting? Color on the Clara Colour does not mean it supports a stylus; check model-specific compatibility.
  • Will you write directly on books or PDFs? Choose a listed stylus-compatible model and confirm the file is supported for notes.
  • Do you regularly read dense, fixed-layout PDFs? Consider more screen area and account for zooming and panning; no size in this lineup is established as a universal comfort threshold.
  • Does the device need to be genuinely pocketable? Screen diagonal is only one part of device size, but moving from 6 inches to 7, 8, or 10.3 inches means trading some compactness for room.
  • Are front-lighting, waterproofing, or a particular transfer method essential? Compare the exact model specifications and file workflow before purchase rather than assuming the features carry across the range.
  • What is the total cost in your region? Check the current device listing and whether the compatible stylus is included or sold separately.

The model and feature comparisons here are based on published specifications and support information; no hands-on testing is represented.
