Before choosing one, decide what area genuinely needs monitoring, whether local or cloud recording fits your needs, and whether the view or installation would affect a neighbor or shared space. Check your lease and building rules before mounting a camera outside your unit.
Start with what you need to monitor
For general awareness inside your home, consider a stationary indoor camera aimed at the relevant room or entry. Keep the camera’s view within the space you control whenever possible. A camera aimed at your own door can still capture a neighbor’s doorway, a shared hallway, or public space.

Placement can matter as much as the camera itself. Apartment and domestic CCTV rules depend on local law and circumstances. The Hellenic Data Protection Authority, for example, describes limits on apartment cameras intruding into neighboring homes or shared areas: its guidance on video surveillance in homes and apartment buildings. UK guidance is another jurisdiction-specific reference, not a universal rule: UK domestic CCTV guidance.

Renters often have an easier time with a freestanding camera or removable mount than with drilling, hardwiring, or attaching equipment to a door, balcony, or common-area surface. Confirm the lease and building rules before making alterations or installing a camera outside your unit; ask the landlord or building manager if the rules are unclear.

Requirements are local and can depend on the situation. NSW guidance, for example, addresses security-camera installation in a specific domestic-violence and abuse context and describes protections effective 21 September 2026. It should not be treated as a general rule for all tenants or locations: NSW guidance for that rental-home context.
Compare local and cloud recording
Local storage, such as a microSD card, may let a camera record without a monthly cloud-storage charge. Cloud plans may provide remote access to recorded history or bundle additional features. These are not interchangeable promises: check the exact model’s requirements, plan terms, retention period, and whether recordings can be retrieved remotely. TP-Link’s storage overview explains the general distinction, but the features remain model-specific: TP-Link’s guide to choosing a home security camera.

- Cloud: Check what is recorded, how long clips remain available, which features require payment, and whether you can view or download clips remotely.
Check privacy and security controls
A connected camera is also an account-connected device. Look for clear information about encryption and available privacy settings. Prefer a model that lets you control the camera’s direction, define privacy zones, and disable audio if you do not need it.
Secure the account with a unique, strong password and enable two-factor authentication if the service offers it. Keep the camera firmware and companion app up to date. The FTC advises people to consider privacy before enabling remote viewing, particularly when a camera shows a private part of the home such as a bedroom: FTC guidance on securing home security cameras.
