Add the daily standing charge, apply the right rate to each day, night or time-of-use period, and check the meter, payment method, region and contract terms that determine whether the offer fits.
What to compare before choosing
For a high-consumption home, a small difference in the unit rate can have a large effect across many kilowatt-hours (kWh). But a tariff’s standing charge is still payable every day, including days when you use no electricity. Compare the whole bill: standing charges plus the cost of electricity in every applicable time band, along with relevant fees.

Ofgem’s price cap limits certain rates on covered default tariffs; it does not cap a household’s total bill. As Ofgem explains, “The more energy you use, the higher your bill will be.” The cap does not protect fixed tariffs, and applicable rates vary by region, payment method and meter arrangement. See Ofgem’s explanation of the energy price cap and standing charges.

- Collect your usage. Use 12 months of bills or account data to find your annual electricity consumption in kWh. If your supplier provides half-hourly data, download it: the pattern can reveal whether heavy use occurs at peak times or could realistically be moved.
- Record your circumstances. Note your region, payment method, meter type, and whether your meter already records separate day and night readings. These details can affect the rates and tariffs available to you.
- Calculate each offer using its actual terms. Multiply its daily standing charge by 365, then add the cost of the kWh used in each rate band. Include applicable fees, the contract end date, and whether and when the rate can change.
- Compare like with like. Apply the same annual usage pattern to every offer. For a single-rate tariff, multiply all kWh by its unit rate. For a multi-rate tariff, apply the recorded kWh separately to each band’s rate.
- Model any load shifting realistically. For a time-of-use tariff, map flexible loads to the offered cheaper periods, but leave inflexible use in the periods when it will actually occur. Do not assume a household can move use simply because a tariff advertises a low overnight rate.
- Check eligibility and exit terms. Confirm the meter requirement, available time bands, contract duration and exit fees with the supplier before switching.
Ofgem’s published cap figures vary by region and payment type. Its average for Direct Debit electricity on a standard variable tariff in England, Scotland and Wales for 1 October–31 December 2026 is 26.32p per kWh and a 54.83p daily standing charge. These are national-average figures for that period, not a quote for an individual household. Ofgem also says electricity has no VAT from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, so costs cannot be directly compared with previous periods because of the change in tax treatment. Check Ofgem’s current price-cap information for the applicable period and rates.

Which tariff type might suit your home?
| Tariff type | How charges work | How to compare | Main risk for a high-use home |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-rate standard or fixed | One unit rate throughout the day, plus a daily standing charge. | Annual kWh × unit rate + 365 × daily standing charge; then include fees and contract terms. | A small unit-rate difference compounds across high consumption. A fixed tariff is outside the price cap; a standard variable tariff has different price-change exposure. |
| Economy 7 or another static multi-rate tariff | Different rates apply in defined peak and off-peak periods. Economy 7 commonly offers seven cheaper overnight hours. | Apply your actual day and night kWh to their respective rates, then add the standing charge. | A high day rate can outweigh night savings if relatively little use falls in the cheaper window. |
| Smart static time-of-use | Rates apply in regular time blocks, sometimes with seasonal variation. | Use half-hourly consumption data and the tariff’s published time bands; model only loads you can shift. | Expensive peak periods and household routines may limit flexibility. A smart meter is required. |
| Dynamic time-of-use | Rates, and often the periods when they apply, change frequently in response to near-real-time wholesale prices. | Compare interval use with available rate history as an indication, while recognizing future rates may differ. | Greater price variability makes costs less predictable and can require active flexibility. Historical comparisons do not guarantee future costs. |
When a time-of-use tariff is worth considering
It is most plausible when a substantial share of your consumption can be moved to cheaper periods without disrupting household needs. Examples include scheduled EV charging, charging a home battery, storage heating or heating hot water. The relevant question is not whether the home uses a lot of electricity, but how much of that use can land in the cheaper band—and what the remaining peak-period use will cost.
Energy Saving Trust says a smart meter is needed to sign up for a smart time-of-use tariff, and cautions that one is unlikely to work if you cannot move energy use outside peak times. Availability, precise hours, prices and eligibility vary by supplier and offer, so check the tariff’s terms. Its guidance is available at Smart time of use tariffs: all you need to know.

Static time-of-use tariffs have regular time blocks; dynamic tariffs may change rates and periods frequently. With either type, include the cost of power you must use during expensive periods. A cheap overnight rate alone does not establish that the tariff will reduce your bill.

How much do standing charges matter?
Include the standing charge even if your household uses a great deal of electricity: it applies per day, while the unit rate applies to each kWh consumed. For high-use homes, unit-rate differences can dominate the comparison, but a lower standing charge can still affect the annual total. Calculate both rather than judging either in isolation.

Ofgem says standing charges cover costs including maintaining the supply network, meter readings, and government social and environmental schemes. It has consulted on moving some costs to unit rates and expanding customer choice; it also notes that some bills could rise and records concerns about customers with vulnerable circumstances and inflexible high energy needs. Those debates do not identify the cheapest tariff for your household: the relevant comparison remains your own all-in annual cost.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why there is no universal saving figure
A time-of-use tariff can cost more when too much consumption stays in expensive periods, and outcomes depend on the tariff’s rates and the household’s usage pattern. Energy Saving Trust’s review of Ofgem standing-charge rebate trials reports modest reductions in 4–7 p.m. use in one of two trials; doubling the maximum rebate produced only a small additional difference. Participants also reported a greater sense of control, while commitments and forgetting peak periods constrained shifting. Ofgem’s summary says the trials involved more than 43,000 customers across British Gas and ScottishPower, but does not state the year for that customer count. These trial findings concern rebate designs, not proof that a particular tariff will save your household money. See Ofgem’s standing-charge rebate trial evaluation.
