How to Estimate the Electricity Cost of a Gaming PC

Estimate a gaming PC’s running cost by multiplying its average power draw in each operating mode by the hours spent in that mode, converting watt-hours to kilowatt-hours, and multiplying by the electricity rate on your bill. Use wall-power measurements where possible: a power supply’s wattage rating is its capacity, not what the computer constantly draws.

The calculation: power, time, and your rate

Use these formulas for each mode of use:

  • Energy (kWh) = average power (W) × hours ÷ 1,000.
  • Cost = energy (kWh) × your price per kWh.

Virginia Cooperative Extension’s appliance-cost guide gives the same method: calculate annual cost by multiplying annual kWh by the utility’s rate per kWh. Use the rate applicable to your account and billing period, rather than treating an example rate from a guide as a current general price: Virginia Cooperative Extension’s electricity-cost guide.

Worked example with hypothetical inputs

Suppose the PC averages 400 W at the wall while gaming for three hours a day. Gaming energy is 400 × 3 ÷ 1,000 = 1.2 kWh per day. At a hypothetical rate of 20 cents per kWh, that gaming time costs 1.2 × $0.20 = $0.24 per day, or $7.20 over 30 identical days. These are illustrative inputs, not a typical-PC measurement or a current electricity rate.

If the PC is also left on at the desktop, calculate that period separately using its idle watts and hours, then add its kWh to the gaming total. For an annual estimate, multiply representative daily consumption by the actual number of days used per year. A 30-day month is only a convenient approximation.

P3 International P4456 Kill A Watt Flex Electricity Usage Monitor – Advanced Power Meter with Data Memory, CO₂ Tracking & Cost Calculator – Upgrade from P4400 Watt Meter
  • The P4456 Kill A Watt Flex is the next-generation upgrade to the classic P4400, offering enhanced tracking, stored data, and deeper insights into your energy usage.
  • Unlike basic watt meters, the P4456 stores your power usage data, so you don’t lose readings when moving between outlets or appliances.
  • See not just how much electricity you use, but your estimated environmental impact — a feature not available on standard watt meters.
  • Instantly measure volts, amps, watts, kilowatt-hours, and projected electricity costs by day, week, month, or year with improved display cycling.
  • Ideal for refrigerators, freezers, space heaters, AC units, gaming PCs, mining rigs, and appliances with fluctuating power draw.

Find a realistic power draw

Measure at the wall for the clearest estimate

A plug-in energy meter can record the assembled computer’s wall input, including the power-supply conversion losses that component telemetry does not capture. Measure during representative play; if your games or sessions vary substantially, record more than one and average results in proportion to how often you play them. To estimate the whole station, measure the tower, monitor, and peripherals together—or measure and add each item separately.

Use software readings as component clues, not the whole answer

CPU and GPU telemetry can help explain what components are doing, but GPU power alone is not total system consumption, and component readings do not necessarily equal the electricity drawn at the wall. Do not treat the power supply’s capacity label, GPU TDP, or maximum component ratings as a measurement of the system’s ordinary draw.

  • 35 inch cord allows you to place plug in out of the way places while the display remains easy to read
  • See the cost of an appliance by HOUR DAY WEEK MONTH YEAR
  • Displays the following measurements Volts Current Watts Frequency Power Factor VA
  • Stores Minimum and Maximum readings in Memory
  • Accurate and easy to use

Count gaming, idle, sleep, and off time separately

For every mode that matters to your usage, multiply its representative average watts by its hours, divide by 1,000, and add the resulting kWh. Gaming intensity, game choice, frame rate, graphics settings, overclocking, and power-management settings can all change the draw. Sleep and off/standby use may be small, but include them if you want a whole-day estimate rather than a gaming-only figure.

Be clear about what your answer covers. A tower-only estimate excludes the display and peripherals. For a complete gaming station, add those devices’ consumption for the hours they are on; their hours may differ from the PC’s.

Why published figures are not a personal bill estimate

There is no single current monthly cost that applies to gaming PCs across builds, games, countries, usage schedules, and electricity tariffs. Historical measurements can provide context, but not a substitute for measuring your own setup.

  • Nathaniel Mills and Evan Mills reported a historical estimate of 1,400 kWh per year for a “typical gaming computer” that included a display, based on measurements of five progressively more efficient configurations and the paper’s assumptions. The authors said intensive user segments could use about twice as much. The paper was published online in 2015; its estimate is not a current universal average: Mills and Mills, gaming-computer energy study.
  • For the older baseline system in that study, active gaming peaked at 512 W and the mode-weighted average while on was 212 W. These are measurements of that historical configuration, not predictions for a current PC: Mills and Mills, measured power figures.
  • Virginia Cooperative Extension’s example for a personal computer and monitor adds 120 W and 150 W, assumes four hours of use daily for 365 days, and calculates 394 kWh per year and $33.51 annually at its example rate of 8.5 cents per kWh. Those are illustrative source inputs, not gaming-PC measurements or a current tariff: Virginia Cooperative Extension’s electricity-cost guide.

Compare two setups fairly

To compare the electricity use of two PCs, keep the conditions consistent: same game and settings, equivalent gaming time, same measurement boundary (tower or full station), and the same applicable electricity rate. Compare average wall watts under that workload if you want to see which draws less power. For efficiency rather than total bill, compare energy for equivalent gaming performance; a lower draw alone does not establish equivalent performance.

Use the rate on your own bill, including any time-of-use rate that applies during the hours you play. A simple running-cost calculation estimates usage charges; standing charges generally do not arise from adding one more device, so they do not belong in a marginal PC-cost estimate. Cooling the room can also affect household consumption in some circumstances, but there is no evidence-based blanket multiplier to add to every gaming-PC estimate.
