Start by deciding whether your router should send household traffic out through a commercial VPN or let you connect back to your home network while away. Those are different setups. Before configuring either one, check your router’s exact model and hardware revision, firmware, supported VPN protocol, and the provider’s configuration requirements. A router VPN can cover devices that cannot run VPN apps, but it does not secure the Wi-Fi connection between those devices and the router.
Choose the right kind of router VPN
Router as a VPN client: route traffic out through a provider
In client mode, the router connects to a commercial VPN provider. You can send all household internet traffic through that tunnel or, on supported systems, choose which devices use it. This can help cover devices that do not offer a VPN app, but the router, its firmware, and the provider must support a compatible protocol and configuration. TP-Link’s client setup guidance describes selected-device routing and notes that availability depends on the model.

Router as a VPN server: connect back home
In server mode, an authorized device away from home connects to your home network through the router. This is for remote access to home resources, not for sending all household browsing through a commercial VPN provider. A router may support client mode, server mode, or both; check the instructions for your exact device. See the vendor’s WireGuard router guide for an example of both modes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck compatibility before you configure or buy
“VPN-capable” is not enough to establish that a router will work with your chosen provider. Confirm all of the following for the exact hardware revision and current firmware:

- Security - SPI Firewall, VPN Pass through, FTP/H.323/PPTP/SIP/IPsec ALG, DoS Defence, Ping of Death and Local Management. Standards and Protocols IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab, IEEE 802.3x, IEEE 802.1q
- The router has the client or server mode you need.
- It supports a protocol the provider also supports, such as WireGuard or OpenVPN.
- The provider supplies compatible configuration files and any required credentials.
- Any desired per-device routing, IPv6 handling, DNS options, and kill-switch behavior are available in that model’s firmware.
Do not assume every router supports WireGuard or OpenVPN. Some implementations may also reject configuration fields that another router accepts. For an OpenWrt-based setup, verify support for the exact hardware revision and be prepared to maintain the firmware; flashing incompatible firmware or doing it incorrectly can make a router stop working. OpenWrt’s device table is a place to check hardware support.
Decide which devices and traffic should use the tunnel
Whole-home routing is simple to reason about: devices using the router’s connection follow its VPN policy. Per-device routing is more selective, but depends on the router. Decide whether devices such as TVs, consoles, work computers, or guest devices should use the tunnel before choosing a model or configuration. A device app may be a better fit if different household members need different VPN locations, app-level controls, or split tunneling.

Router-level routing also changes how you change VPN locations: on provider setups documented for routers, you generally change the router’s configuration rather than switching locations in an app on each device. Compare this loss of convenience and per-device control against the benefit of covering devices without suitable apps.
Choose a protocol your router and provider both support
WireGuard and OpenVPN are both documented for router VPN use, but the available evidence does not establish a universal speed or security winner for every router-and-provider combination. Choose a protocol that both sides support and that you can configure correctly. Then compare speed and stability in your own setup; encryption uses router processing capacity, and a less powerful router may reduce throughput.

Check IPv6 and DNS rather than assuming the tunnel covers them
IPv6
A working IPv4 VPN connection does not prove IPv6 traffic also travels through the tunnel. If a network has IPv6 but the VPN does not support it, IPv6 traffic may go outside the VPN and miss its integrity and confidentiality protection. The IETF’s informational RFC 7359 describes this dual-stack issue and recommends routing IPv6 through the VPN when supported; disabling IPv6 is presented as a temporary workaround when it is not. Check your router and provider’s actual behavior rather than assuming IPv6 is covered.
DNS
Confirm that DNS requests follow the path intended by your VPN provider, then check the observed resolver while connected. GL.iNet’s VPN dashboard documentation describes DNS checks and a kill-switch option. If you use a separate encrypted DNS service, verify where its queries go; encryption of the DNS connection alone does not establish that queries follow the VPN route.

Set a policy for VPN failures
Decide whether devices should regain ordinary ISP internet access if the VPN tunnel drops. If traffic must not fall back to the ISP path, use the router’s kill switch or firewall policy to block non-VPN traffic when the tunnel is down, if the router supports it. That can interrupt internet access during a VPN outage, which is the intended trade-off. Check the router’s documentation to understand exactly what the policy blocks.
Test the configuration before relying on it
After setup, test the behavior that matters for your household rather than treating a “connected” status as proof that everything is routed correctly:
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
- Connect the VPN and confirm that ordinary internet access works.
- Check the public IP address and confirm it reflects the VPN connection rather than the usual ISP connection.
- Check the DNS resolver while connected and confirm it matches the route you intended.
- If the router offers per-device routing, check both a selected device and one excluded from the VPN.
- Disconnect or interrupt the VPN tunnel and confirm whether traffic is blocked or falls back, according to your chosen failure policy.
- Check IPv6 separately if your network and provider use it.
These are practical verification steps, not results from a benchmark of a particular router. Router performance, configuration options, and failure behavior vary by model, firmware, and provider.
Understand what a router VPN does not protect
A router VPN encrypts traffic between the router and the VPN endpoint, but it does not encrypt the local wireless connection from a device to the router. Proton VPN explains this distinction in its router setup guidance. Use a strong Wi-Fi password and secure router administration separately; a VPN is not a replacement for those protections.
Router VPN or VPN apps on each device?
| Consideration | Router as VPN client | VPN apps on devices |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Can cover devices that cannot run apps; all-device or selected-device coverage depends on router features. | Applies to devices where an app is installed and configured. |
| Control | Central control; individual locations or rules may be less convenient. | Usually easier to choose locations and controls separately by device, depending on the app. |
| Compatibility | Router firmware, provider protocol, configuration, and routing features must match. | Each device must support the provider’s app or manual setup. |
| Performance | Encryption uses router resources and may reduce throughput on weaker hardware. | Performance depends on the device and its VPN app; no universal comparison is established here. |
| Failure behavior | A router kill switch or firewall policy may block non-VPN traffic if the tunnel drops, if supported. | Failure behavior depends on the app and device settings. |
Choose router client mode when centralized coverage, including for devices without apps, is the priority and the hardware can handle it. Choose device apps when users need separate controls or easy location changes. A router VPN server is a separate option when the goal is remote access to home, rather than commercial-VPN routing for household browsing.
