How to Check Whether Your Router’s DNS Settings Were Changed

Check your router’s WAN and DHCP DNS settings, confirm whether they should be automatic or manually set, and verify unfamiliar resolver addresses with your ISP or network administrator.

Sign in to your router using the administration method documented for its make and model, then check the DNS settings under Internet or WAN and, if available, LAN or DHCP. Record the primary and secondary resolver addresses and whether they are automatic or manually set. Compare them with the configuration your ISP or network administrator expects: there is no single DNS address that is correct for every network, and an unfamiliar value is a reason to verify—not proof that the router was compromised.

Where to look for DNS settings

Router labels and menus vary by manufacturer, model, and ISP. Find the make and model on the router label or in your ISP’s account or app, then use the manufacturer’s official documentation to locate its administration page or app and DNS settings. The FBI likewise notes that router access procedures vary by manufacturer (FBI DNSChanger guidance).

Internet or WAN settings

In the router interface, look for DNS under headings such as Internet, WAN, broadband, or connection. Record the displayed primary and secondary DNS addresses. Note whether DNS is set to automatic or ISP-provided, or whether the router shows manually entered addresses.

LAN or DHCP settings

If the router has LAN or DHCP settings, inspect those as well. DHCP can distribute DNS resolver addresses to devices that join the network, so the addresses advertised to devices may matter in addition to the router’s Internet/WAN configuration. Save a record of what you see before changing anything.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

How to tell whether the settings are expected

Ask your ISP or network administrator which DNS configuration the service should use, including whether it should be automatic or set to specific addresses. Compare that answer with both the router’s displayed resolver addresses and the setting mode. If you or your administrator deliberately chose a privacy or security DNS service, a resolver that differs from the ISP’s may be expected.

There is no reliable universal list of “bad” DNS addresses that can determine whether an unfamiliar value is malicious. An address that you do not recognize should be verified with the person or organization responsible for the network before you draw conclusions. A changed value by itself does not establish compromise or show that data was stolen.

What an unexpected change can mean

Unauthorized changes to a router’s DNS or DHCP settings can affect devices that receive resolver settings from it. In an operation announced on April 7, 2026, the FBI and partner agencies described actors changing DHCP/DNS settings on compromised routers to introduce controlled resolvers; connected devices could inherit those settings. The agencies also said fraudulent DNS answers for selected services could support interception if users proceeded past certificate warnings (FBI/IC3 alert). That account describes a particular operation and threat; it does not mean every unexpected DNS address is malicious or that every affected network suffered the same consequences.

The Department of Justice said that, since at least 2024, GRU actors exploited vulnerabilities to steal credentials for “thousands of TP-Link routers worldwide” (DOJ announcement, April 7, 2026). This figure concerns that specific activity, not the share of all routers or ordinary home users affected. The agencies’ notices do not establish a general-population rate for router DNS changes.

What to do if you cannot explain the settings

  1. Verify the expected configuration. Contact your ISP or network administrator using a trusted contact method. Ask whether the displayed addresses and automatic or manual setting are expected.
  2. Secure router administration. Set a strong, unique administrator password if the current credentials are weak or shared. Review whether remote management exposed to the internet is enabled, and disable it if you do not need it, following the router maker’s instructions.
  3. Check for firmware updates. Use the router maker’s documented process to install the current firmware available for your model. If the router is end-of-life or no longer supported, the DOJ recommends replacing it rather than relying on unavailable updates (DOJ router remediation guidance).
  4. Restore a trusted configuration safely. Follow model-specific instructions or ask the ISP for help setting DNS and DHCP back to the expected values. A factory reset may erase custom network settings, so consult the manufacturer or ISP before using one; reset steps and consequences vary by router.
  5. Check devices and seek help if needed. If you suspect the router was compromised, consider whether computers and other connected devices need review. The FBI’s older DNSChanger guidance explains that malware can alter computer DNS settings or attempt to change router settings; it is background on possible mechanisms, not evidence that a particular device is infected (FBI DNSChanger guidance). Contact your ISP, router maker, or a qualified professional if you cannot verify or restore the configuration.
  6. Document and report suspected compromise. Keep the router’s make and model and your observations about its DNS/DHCP configuration available. The FBI/IC3 advises suspected victims to report activity to a local FBI field office or IC3 (FBI/IC3 alert).

Do not bypass unexpected certificate warnings

If a browser or app warns that a certificate is invalid or does not match the service you meant to reach, stop rather than clicking through—especially for email, work, banking, or other sensitive accounts. The FBI/IC3 described certificate warnings as relevant to the specific DNS-hijacking operation because proceeding could expose traffic to interception; a warning should be treated seriously, not as proof by itself that DNS was changed.
