Choose a router by the security support promised for its exact model and hardware revision—not by speed or a vague claim of “regular updates.” Check that the manufacturer publishes how long security updates will continue, how it delivers them, and how it announces fixes. Then confirm Wi-Fi security compatibility, useful network controls, and fit with your internet provider and home.
Check whether your current router still receives security updates
Before shopping, find the router’s model name and hardware revision on its label, in its manual, or in its administration screen. Search the manufacturer’s official support pages for firmware, security advisories, and end-of-life (EOL) information for that exact version. If it remains supported and meets your needs, keep its firmware current. If support has ended, prioritize replacement.

Age alone does not prove that a router is unsupported, and a quiet update history is not definitive proof either. The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) says router security updates are usually provided for a limited period of 3 to 5 years, varying by brand and model. ACSC also says no firmware or security patch for more than 12 months makes EOL likely. Treat that as a reason to investigate, not proof: confirm the status on the manufacturer’s EOL page or with its support team. ACSC router guidance
Compare the support policy before comparing Wi-Fi generations
For every router you are considering, look for a published minimum security-update period, an expected end date or a clear policy for ending support, and a process for reporting security issues and releasing fixes. A stated period gives you a more useful basis for choosing than an undefined promise of “regular updates.” The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) says manufacturers should publish the minimum period for which a device will receive security updates and specify an end date or a policy that defines notice before support ends. Its guidance also calls for identifying third-party components whose update lifetimes may differ. NCSC device update principles

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Check the exact model and hardware revision rather than assuming every product in a brand’s lineup has the same lifecycle. No cross-brand comparison of current models’ support periods is established here, so do not infer which router will last longest without checking its current official policy.
Check how updates are delivered
Automatic firmware updates are convenient, but they do not extend a product’s support lifetime: they help only while the manufacturer is still issuing fixes. Prefer automatic updates or clear alerts, and confirm firmware is available for the precise hardware revision and region you will use. NCSC warns that devices without automatic updates may stay unpatched even after a fix is available. It also recommends that devices verify updates come from a trusted source and have not been altered in transit. Download firmware only from the manufacturer’s official site or through the router’s built-in update process; avoid unofficial download sites. NCSC device update principles ACSC router guidance

Choose encryption your household’s devices can use
Look for WPA3 Personal, the newer option recommended alongside WPA2 Personal by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). If an older phone, printer, camera, or smart-home device cannot connect with WPA3, WPA3 transition mode may help. WPA2 Personal is a fallback supported in FTC guidance; avoid older WPA and WEP security modes. If a router cannot support WPA2 at minimum, ACSC advises considering replacement. Confirm that important devices connect under the security mode you plan to use. FTC home Wi-Fi guidance ACSC router guidance

Security support is the first filter; then compare what will work in your home. A mesh system may suit a home where one router cannot cover multiple locations, while a single router may be enough for a smaller space. Consider the layout and coverage you need rather than assuming a newer Wi-Fi generation will fix a coverage problem.

- Setup and management: Confirm that you can update and administer the router in a way you can maintain.
- Built-in versus paid security: Find out which controls are included and which require a recurring subscription. A paid add-on is not a substitute for firmware maintenance or an ongoing support commitment.
Secure the router after installation
Good support does not replace secure setup. After installation, update the firmware, then set unique administrator and Wi-Fi passwords. Choose a network name that does not reveal personal details, and keep the built-in firewall enabled.
- Turn off remote management unless you have a specific need for it.
- Use a guest network for visitors.
- Disable WPS if you do not need it.
- Disable UPnP if you do not need it, but first check whether a game or smart device depends on it.
