How to Choose a Replacement SSD for a Windows PC

Find a replacement SSD your Windows PC actually supports. Check its manual for form factor, interface, M.2 size, and limits, then plan your data migration safely.

The right replacement SSD is the one your specific PC supports—not simply the fastest drive or the one that fits a connector by sight. Check the computer or motherboard’s official manual for the drive bay or slot, interface and protocol, and any size or capacity limits before buying. Then plan how to move Windows and your files, and secure a backup and any BitLocker recovery key before opening the computer.

Start with the PC’s exact model

Look up the full model number of a laptop or prebuilt desktop, or the motherboard model of a custom desktop. Use the manufacturer’s specifications or manual to identify supported storage. If you cannot find a clear specification, ask the system or motherboard maker rather than inferring compatibility from the connector’s appearance.

Check these details in the manual:

  • Whether storage is replaceable and which bay or slot it uses.
  • For a 2.5-inch drive, whether the system supports SATA, and what physical clearance, thickness, connector, and mounting hardware it requires.
  • For an M.2 drive, whether the slot supports SATA, PCIe NVMe, or both; which module lengths it accepts, such as 2242 or 2280; and any stated keying requirements.
  • Whether use of a slot affects other SATA ports or PCIe lanes, or whether the manufacturer specifies capacity or boot restrictions.
  • Whether an existing heatsink or thermal pad must be reused.

M.2 describes a form factor, not a guarantee of protocol support. An M.2 socket may support SATA, PCIe NVMe, or a specified subset; keying alone does not prove that a drive’s protocol is supported. Kingston explains that M.2 sockets can share PCIe lanes or SATA ports and that B+M keying works only when the host supports the drive’s protocol: Kingston’s M.2 guide. Samsung’s NVMe SSD FAQ describes B-Key and M-Key capability and recommends using the original M.2 slot for its NVMe SSDs. Treat both as reasons to verify the particular PC’s documentation, not as substitutes for it.

Understand the drive types

These common descriptions refer to different combinations of physical format and interface. The compatible choice depends on the system manual, not on which drive looks similar to the one already installed.

Drive type What to verify Practical implication
2.5-inch SATA A supported 2.5-inch bay, SATA connection, clearance, and mounting requirements Use only if the PC supports this drive type and has the needed space and connection.
M.2 SATA An M.2 slot that supports SATA and the drive’s length and key requirements It is an M.2 module, but it does not use the NVMe protocol.
M.2 PCIe NVMe An M.2 slot that supports PCIe NVMe, plus length and key requirements It is not automatically compatible with every M.2 slot; the slot’s protocol and PCIe support matter.

If the system supports a newer PCIe generation or lane configuration only up to a particular level, a drive’s advertised peak speed may not be available in that PC. Compare advertised performance against the host’s documented support rather than treating a headline figure as a guaranteed result. Samsung’s SSD upgrade page offers an interface example, not a universal compatibility recommendation or independent performance comparison.

Choose capacity and performance for your use

Once compatibility is established, base capacity on how much space Windows, installed applications, and your files use now, plus room for likely growth. Microsoft lists 64 GB as the minimum storage-device requirement for Windows 11, but that is an operating-system minimum—not a recommendation for a useful replacement drive: Windows 11 specifications.

Kingston 960GB A400 SATA3 2.5" Internal SSD SA400S37/960G - HDD Replacement for Increase Performance
  • Fast start up, loading and file transfers
  • More reliable and durable than a hard drive
  • Multiple capacities with space for applications or a hard drive replacement

Compare candidate drives on the following points:

  • Supported form factor, interface and protocol, and physical dimensions.
  • Capacity relative to your current storage use and expected additions.
  • Price for the capacity you need, along with the specific product’s warranty and endurance terms.
  • Advertised performance against the PC’s supported interface and PCIe configuration.

There is no single capacity or performance tier that suits every PC owner. Check warranty and endurance details in the documentation for each product you consider; the model and system specifications determine which comparisons are meaningful.

Plan how to move Windows and your files

Decide what should happen to the old drive before removing it. If it is readable and you want to keep the existing Windows setup and applications, cloning is one possible migration route. The needed connection method and steps depend on the source drive, target drive, and PC; do not assume that every SSD includes cloning software or that one adapter works for every combination. Crucial describes cloning as part of its SSD installation workflow.

A clean installation is another option. Microsoft says Windows installation media is typically created on a USB drive or DVD. A clean install removes personal files, apps, customizations, and settings, so back up important data first. See Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling Windows with installation media.

If the PC is encrypted, locate and save the BitLocker recovery key before reset or recovery work. Microsoft specifically advises having the key available for an encrypted device: reset your PC.

Replace the drive using the system’s instructions

Physical access varies by computer, so follow its manufacturer’s service instructions rather than a generic disassembly sequence. Before you begin, have any compatible migration hardware or Windows installation media ready. When installing an M.2 drive, use the system’s specified mounting screw; sizes are not standardized across all PCs. Crucial advises contacting the system or motherboard manufacturer if the supplied screw does not fit: Crucial’s SSD installation guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the exact PC or motherboard model and check the official storage specifications.
  2. Identify the current drive’s form factor and interface, then confirm supported options in the manual. Do not assume that an unused-looking slot supports a particular drive type.
  3. Select a compatible SSD with suitable capacity and performance, and check its product-specific warranty and endurance terms.
  4. Back up files. If the device is encrypted, locate the BitLocker recovery key. Choose cloning or a clean install and prepare any required compatible connection hardware or installation media.
  5. Install the drive according to the PC maker’s physical instructions, reusing any specified heatsink or thermal pad and using the correct mounting hardware.
  6. Start the PC from the new drive, confirm Windows and the files you need are available, and check Windows activation status.

Check activation without assuming an SSD will deactivate Windows

Before starting, check that Windows is activated and know whether the current installation uses a digital license or product key. Microsoft says a significant hardware change, particularly a motherboard replacement, can mean Windows no longer finds a matching license and may require reactivation. Its guidance does not establish that replacing only an SSD always triggers reactivation. If Windows reports an activation issue after the replacement, use Microsoft’s hardware-change reactivation guidance.
