Then verify that your phone supports the carrier’s network and test service at home and the places you regularly go. Maps estimate outdoor coverage; none guarantees a usable signal inside your building.
How to compare cell coverage at your address
- Open the FCC National Broadband Map and choose Mobile Broadband. Search your street address. If it is not found, navigate to the location on the map. The mobile view is separate from the map’s fixed-broadband information. See the FCC National Broadband Map and the FCC’s map-use guidance.
- Compare providers at the location. Check the map legend, the selected filters, and the data-as-of date. FCC mobile coverage data is based on provider submissions; providers file availability data twice a year, and the FCC updates its map through verification, location corrections, new data, and public input. The FCC explains its map’s contents in What’s on the National Broadband Map.
- Match the network and conditions. Compare LTE with LTE or the same 5G tier with the same tier. Also use the same condition—outdoor stationary or in-vehicle—when comparing results. The FCC’s 5G filters represent thresholds of 35 Mbps down/3 Mbps up and 7 Mbps down/1 Mbps up; they are not promises of those speeds at every point shown. The FCC describes its modeling parameters in Formatting Mobile Broadband Availability Coverage Maps.
- Search the same address on each candidate carrier’s map. Compare its displayed network layers and read the map’s limitations. FCC and carrier maps can use different modeling assumptions, including different treatment of roaming, so a mismatch does not by itself show that one map is wrong.
- Check your exact phone model. Confirm that it supports the carrier’s relevant network bands and that its software is up to date. For example, Verizon says access to its full 5G Ultra Wideband network requires support for n77 (C-band), n260, and n261. Its coverage-map information explains the map and coverage considerations.
- Test where you need service. If the decision matters, check calls and data at home and regular destinations with the phone and service context you expect to use. A temporary carrier trial can help if one is currently offered to you; eligibility and terms vary, so check them with the provider.
What the maps actually tell you
FCC National Broadband Map
The FCC’s mobile coverage polygons are generated with propagation modeling and common settings intended to support consistent comparisons. They represent modeled areas where a user should be able to connect outdoors or while moving in a vehicle and achieve specified upload and download speeds. The FCC explicitly says the map does not show mobile broadband availability indoors. Its map guidance also notes that real-world experience can vary with the device, cell-site capacity, and terrain.

Be specific when reading a 5G result: the two FCC speed tiers are 35/3 Mbps and 7/1 Mbps, not a single universal 5G layer. The map also lets you distinguish 3G, 4G LTE, and 5G, and choose outdoor-stationary or in-vehicle conditions. The selected layer describes the model being displayed, not a guarantee for every handset or building.
Carrier maps
Carrier maps are useful as a second view of the same address, but each provider describes its map as approximate rather than a service guarantee.

| Carrier | Address search and layers | What its map says |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T | Search by address, city and state, or ZIP code. | Its map displays approximate outdoor coverage; actual coverage may vary, is not guaranteed, and can change without notice. AT&T Wireless Coverage Map. |
| Verizon | Shows 5G Ultra Wideband, 5G, and LTE. | Its map shows approximate outdoor coverage and is not a guarantee of service. Verizon notes that equipment, weather, topography, environmental factors, and buildings can affect coverage. Verizon Coverage Map and map information. |
| T-Mobile | Search by address or ZIP code. | The map describes anticipated outdoor coverage, not a guarantee. Network changes, traffic, outages, equipment, obstructions, weather, and other conditions can affect service. Why coverage maps disagree
Providers and the FCC may use different parameters and assumptions, including whether roaming agreements count as availability. Their maps may therefore show different boundaries or availability at the same address. Check what each map includes, then treat disagreement as a reason to verify service in the conditions that matter to you—not as proof that either map is defective. The FCC discusses these differences in its National Broadband Map guidance.
Why a coverage map may not match your experience
- Indoor signal is different from modeled outdoor coverage. Walls, building materials, and your position inside a building can affect reception. The FCC mobile map does not include indoor availability.
- A colored area is not a guarantee. Actual connection and performance can vary with device, terrain, cell-site capacity, weather, obstructions, network traffic, outages, and building conditions.
- Network labels hide different thresholds. A 7/1 Mbps 5G layer and a 35/3 Mbps 5G layer are not equivalent. Nor are outdoor-stationary and in-vehicle views.
- Your handset may not support the network shown. Check its supported bands and software compatibility for the carrier and network generation you intend to use.
- Partner or roaming coverage may differ from native coverage. T-Mobile identifies areas served by local wireless partners, and FCC guidance says roaming assumptions can affect map comparisons. Check the plan terms for applicable limits.
Why national coverage percentages cannot pick a local carrier
National figures describe broad population coverage, not service at a specific address, building, or destination. Verizon reports LTE coverage to more than 99% of the U.S. population. T-Mobile reports LTE coverage for 99% of Americans and 5G coverage for 98%. These are carrier-published claims, not standardized head-to-head measurements or proof that either carrier works at your home. Use address-level maps and real-world testing instead.

What to do if the FCC map appears wrong
If you do not receive the mobile coverage shown, the FCC provides a process to challenge mobile availability using designated outdoor or in-vehicle tests in the FCC Mobile Speed Test App. Follow the current instructions on the FCC map-use help page; the relevant test condition matters because the map’s mobile layers distinguish those conditions.
