Choose a RAM upgrade by checking your exact motherboard and processor first, then selecting enough compatible memory for your games and other running apps. Confirm DDR generation, desktop DIMM type, capacity limits, supported speeds and the correct slots before buying: DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable, and a kit’s advertised speed may require a supported XMP or EXPO profile.
Check what your PC supports before buying
Start with the motherboard and processor, or the exact make and model of a prebuilt PC. The supported memory depends on that platform, not just on the game you want to play. Intel’s guidance puts it plainly: “The most important thing to keep in mind when shopping for RAM is what your motherboard and processor can support.”

Look up the board or system manual and check its memory specifications and population table. A manufacturer memory configurator can also help match modules to an exact model. Record:
- Whether the system uses DDR4 or DDR5.
- Whether it takes desktop DIMMs or laptop SO-DIMMs.
- The maximum supported capacity and number of slots.
- Supported memory speeds and whether XMP or EXPO profiles are supported.
- How many modules are installed, their capacity, and which slots are free.
- The recommended sockets for a paired configuration.
Do not assume two PCs with similar processors have identical memory support: motherboard models and prebuilt variants can differ. Kingston describes AMD AM4 platforms as DDR4 and AM5 as DDR5-only; Intel support varies by processor generation and motherboard, so verify the exact system. A DDR4 board cannot be converted to DDR5 by changing the modules.

How much RAM do I need for gaming?
Capacity depends on what runs alongside the game. Intel recommends at least 16GB for modern gaming and suggests 32GB when streaming or running several processes at once. Kingston recommends 32GB for current gaming titles. These are vendor recommendations, not a rule that every game requires 32GB.
| Use case | Capacity to consider | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming, with few other demanding apps open | At least 16GB | Intel’s recommendation for modern gaming; publication date not shown on its page. |
| Gaming while streaming or multitasking | 32GB | Intel suggests this for streaming or several simultaneous processes; publication date not shown on its page. |
| Recent gaming titles | 32GB | Kingston’s recommendation for current titles, not a universal game requirement. |
| Heavy background workloads | 48GB or 64GB may be worth considering | Kingston mentions these capacities for heavy background use; assess your actual workload and platform limits. |
If your current capacity is adequate and your games are not constrained by memory, adding more alone does not guarantee better performance. Kingston’s support FAQ cautions: “Additional memory will not necessarily increase the performance of your computer.”

Should I add RAM or replace the existing modules?
Adding a module can be a sensible upgrade when a compatible slot is available, but matching the existing memory is not always straightforward. Check capacity, speed, rank or density support, and the board’s slot-population guidance. Mixing kits can introduce compatibility issues or cause memory to run at a lower speed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA matched kit gives you modules designed and validated to work together, reducing uncertainty. For a common dual-channel setup, use a matched pair in the slots specified by the motherboard manual. On a four-slot board, the preferred pair is model-specific; do not rely on slot names or positions remembered from another PC.

If you already have a matched pair and need more capacity, consult the motherboard’s supported population table before adding another pair. Kingston’s Ryzen guidance for AM5 generally advises against four modules unless maximum capacity is needed, because populating more slots can reduce achievable speed or stability. That is platform-specific advice, not a universal rule for every PC.
Can I mix DDR4 and DDR5 RAM?
No. DDR4 and DDR5 are different memory generations with different platform and socket requirements; they are not interchangeable. The motherboard determines which generation it accepts, and replacing RAM does not change a DDR4 board into a DDR5 board. Check the exact board or system specifications rather than relying on a processor-family label.

Is faster RAM worth paying more for?
Only if the processor, motherboard, module count and configuration can support the speed, and the likely benefit matters for your games. A kit’s advertised profile speed is not necessarily its default operating speed. Memory may start at a standard JEDEC setting; XMP or EXPO can enable a higher rated profile when the platform supports it and the profile is configured.

More populated slots can affect the speed a system can achieve. Intel notes that gaming performance gains vary by game, so compare benchmarks for a similar processor, graphics card, game, resolution and memory configuration before paying extra. RAM speed is not a substitute for adequate capacity, and a CPU or GPU limitation may matter more to game performance.

Install and verify the upgrade
- Read the manual: Find the memory installation and supported population sections for your exact motherboard or system.
- Use the documented sockets: Install a pair in the specified slots, especially on boards with four slots.
- Configure a profile only if supported: If you want the kit’s XMP or EXPO speed, enable the appropriate profile in firmware/UEFI only when the board and processor support it.
- Check the result: After startup, verify that the system reports the expected total capacity and configured memory speed. If it does not, consult the system manual and review module seating, slot placement and profile settings.
What to compare when choosing a kit
- Compatibility: DDR generation, DIMM form factor, exact motherboard/system model and processor support.
- Capacity: Your game workload plus streaming, voice chat and other apps, within the platform’s maximum.
- Configuration: Matched-kit status, module count and the board’s preferred slot population.
- Speed: The kit’s standard and profile settings versus what the full system can run.
- Value: Relevant game-specific benchmark evidence and whether memory, rather than the CPU or GPU, is limiting performance.
An exact kit recommendation requires the motherboard or prebuilt PC model and processor. For background on the criteria, see Intel’s RAM guide for gaming PCs, its gaming PC build guide, and Kingston’s memory support information.
