How to Choose a Racing Game for Local Multiplayer

A practical guide to choosing a local multiplayer racing game, with platform-specific player counts, controller requirements, setup steps and common pitfalls.

The best local multiplayer racing game is the one that fits your hardware, number of players, controllers and preferred race format. First decide whether everyone will share one screen or use local wireless across several consoles; then check platform-specific player limits, controller requirements and whether your group wants free-for-all competition or cooperative team play.

Start with the way your group will connect

“Local multiplayer” can describe two very different setups. In same-console split-screen, two or more people use one console and one display, with the screen divided into racing views. Local wireless connects multiple consoles nearby; each player normally has a separate screen, and the game may require a copy of the software on every console.

Write down the equipment you already have before choosing a game:

  • Console or consoles and their exact platform versions.
  • Number of players who will race at the same time.
  • One compatible controller for each player.
  • One television or monitor for split-screen, or enough consoles and displays for local wireless.
  • Whether the group wants one shared screen, separate screens, competitive racing or team cooperation.

This check prevents the most common disappointment: buying a game advertised as supporting eight local players, then discovering that the eight-player figure applies to multiple consoles rather than eight people sharing one television.

Also distinguish the number of people attending from the number racing simultaneously. A game may let players rotate between heats, but that does not increase its supported player count for a single race. If spectators will take turns, decide how results will be recorded and whether the game has a tournament or cup structure that makes rotation easy.

These figures describe published game features, not independent performance tests. Retail stock, regional editions and current prices can change, so verify those details for your region at purchase time.

The table is best used as a screening tool, not a ranking. A four-player mode may be more useful than an eight-player headline if your group owns only one console. Conversely, a game with excellent same-screen play is a poor choice for a gathering where every guest already has a separate console and wants an individual display.

Choose by player count, not the headline maximum

Two players

Two people can use almost any supported split-screen mode, but the practical choice depends on the rest of the group. If younger or inexperienced players are joining, a game with driving assistance can reduce frustration. If both racers want a more tactical session, team mechanics may add decisions beyond simply finishing first.

For two players, tabletop mode can be convenient on a Switch, but the smaller display makes track readability and comfortable viewing worth checking in advance. TV mode gives each split-screen view more physical space. Either way, test the intended controller arrangement before guests arrive.

Three or four players on one screen

Four-player shared-screen support is the key requirement. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe explicitly supports up to four split-screen players on one Switch in TV or tabletop mode. SEGA lists one-to-four local players for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, and PlayStation describes local split-screen for its Grand Prix and Race Park modes. Team Sonic Racing product information specifies four-player split-screen.

Do not assume that a game’s online or wireless maximum also applies to a single console. Confirm the wording “split-screen,” “local play” or “local multiplayer” for the exact platform edition you intend to use.

With four views on one display, seating and screen size matter more than they do with two players. Put the display where every racer can read their own position and warning indicators. A short practice race is useful for finding whether anyone needs a different seat, controller grip or assistance setting.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Hit the road with the definitive version of Mario Kart 8 and play anytime, anywhere! Race your friends or battle them in a revised battle mode on new and returning battle courses
  • Play locally in up to 4-player multiplayer in 1080p while playing in TV Mode. Every track from the Wii U version, including DLC, makes a glorious return
  • Plus, the Inklings appear as all-new guest characters, along with returning favorites, such as King Boo, Dry Bones, and Bowser Jr.
  • Players can choose a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids even at 200cc

Five to eight players

At this size, hardware becomes the deciding factor. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe supports up to eight through local wireless, but each participant needs a compatible console and a copy of the software. On Nintendo Switch, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds separately lists local communication for up to eight players. Those are multi-console arrangements, not eight people sharing one display.

Large groups should plan the network and charging arrangements as carefully as the game purchase. Place consoles close enough for local communication, update them ahead of time, and label controllers or seats if several guests bring similar equipment. Have a fallback activity or rotation plan in case one console, copy or controller fails.

Count controllers before you buy

Nintendo states that multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player and notes that additional controllers may be required. A console with two controllers is therefore ready for two racers, not automatically four. Check whether each person will use a complete gamepad, a split controller pair or another supported configuration for the platform and mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For four-player split-screen, count four usable controller inputs before starting the game.
  • For local wireless, count controllers for every player on every console.
  • Charge wireless controllers and pair them with the correct console before guests arrive.
  • If a controller is shared between profiles, test the game’s player-join screen rather than assuming the operating system pairing is sufficient.

Because no specific accessory model has been established here, choose an accessory only after confirming compatibility with your console and the game mode you will use.

Remember that a controller requirement can affect the real cost of a session even when the software is already owned. You may need additional controllers, charging cables or a compatible adapter. The available product information does not establish current accessory prices or a particular bundle, so treat any advertised bundle count as something to verify rather than as proof that every racer is covered.

Match the racing style to your group

Free-for-all kart racing

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the straightforward choice when everyone wants to race independently, use items and share one Switch. Its product information lists 48 courses, and the game was released on 28 April 2017. The large course selection helps repeated local sessions feel less repetitive, while the rules remain understandable for first-time players.

Mixed-skill groups

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe includes Smart Steering as an option Nintendo describes as helping new players stay on course. It is useful when one person is learning the controls while others already know the tracks. Decide before the first race whether assistance is enabled for everyone or only for players who need it, so the group agrees on the conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assistance settings are also a social choice. If the group is competing for a prize or a final ranking, announce which aids are allowed and keep the rule consistent. If the aim is simply to include everyone, allowing newer players to use Smart Steering can be more welcoming than forcing identical settings.

  • Players can choose a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids even at 200cc

Multi-platform local kart racing

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the broader platform option among the documented choices. SEGA lists local play for one to four players and, for Nintendo Switch, local communication for up to eight. On PlayStation, the published local modes include split-screen in Grand Prix and Race Park. Treat those as platform-specific statements rather than one universal rule: check the exact console edition and mode menu.

Cooperative team racing

Team Sonic Racing is designed around cooperation. SEGA’s product information describes four-player split-screen and mechanics for sharing power-ups and speed boosts with teammates. This changes the social dynamic: a player can contribute by supporting the team even when they are not leading individually. The cited product sheet dates from 21 May 2018, so verify that the version you can buy still supports your platform and intended local mode.

Team play is worth explaining before the first start. Players should know whether passing a power-up to a teammate, creating a boost opportunity or protecting a teammate is more valuable than chasing an individual position. That briefing prevents a cooperative mode from feeling like an ordinary race with unfamiliar buttons.

Platform-specific checks

Nintendo Switch: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

  1. Decide between TV mode and tabletop mode. Nintendo lists split-screen support in both.
  2. Connect one compatible controller for every participant.
  3. Open the game’s multiplayer option and select the local split-screen mode for a shared-console session.
  4. For a wireless gathering, use local wireless instead, then connect the consoles according to the in-game instructions.
  5. For local wireless, provide one copy of the software per player; the eight-player figure does not describe one-console split-screen.

Nintendo also states that two local players can join online races together. That is a mixed local-and-online arrangement, not offline local multiplayer; internet access, accounts and a paid online membership may be required, depending on your region and Nintendo’s current terms.

That online option should not be used to inflate the offline count in your plans. If the event depends on internet play, confirm each account, connection and membership requirement separately and test the arrangement before the group arrives.

Nintendo Switch: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds

  1. Confirm that your Switch edition exposes the local-play mode you need.
  2. Use local play for a shared-console group of up to four where the game menu and edition support it.
  3. Use local communication when planning a larger group; SEGA lists up to eight on Switch for that mode.
  4. Check the current in-game and product-page notices before an event, because features and instructions can change with updates.

PlayStation: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds

  1. Confirm that your PlayStation model and edition support the local split-screen mode.
  2. Pair a controller for each racer.
  3. Select Grand Prix or Race Park if those are the local modes presented by your version.
  4. Run a short test race before inviting a full group, since the published player count and mode names are platform-specific.

Team Sonic Racing

  1. Verify present-day platform availability rather than relying solely on the 2018 product sheet.
  2. Confirm that the local menu offers four-player split-screen on your edition.
  3. Explain the team roles before racing: sharing power-ups and speed boosts is central to the cooperative design.
  4. Agree on team assignments and whether players may choose teams freely, if the mode provides that option.

A practical decision procedure

  1. Fix the display plan. Choose one-screen split-screen or multiple-console local wireless. Eliminate games whose documented mode does not match.
  2. Set the real player count. Use the number who will race simultaneously, not the number who might attend. Four people on one Switch requires four-player split-screen support.
  3. Inventory controllers. Confirm one compatible controller input per player and arrange any additional hardware before purchase.
  4. Choose the social format. Pick free-for-all kart racing for direct competition, assistance options for mixed experience, or cooperative team racing when supporting teammates matters.
  5. Check the platform edition. CrossWorlds has different published local details for general local play, Switch local communication and PlayStation split-screen.
  6. Check volatile details. Verify current availability, regional edition, software requirements and price immediately before buying. This is especially important for the older Team Sonic Racing product information.
  7. Run a rehearsal. Connect every controller, start the intended local mode and complete one short race. A five-minute test catches missing controllers, incorrect mode selection and account or update prompts before the event.

If you are buying for a recurring game night, keep a small checklist with the console model, software copy count, controller count and preferred mode. This avoids repeating the same compatibility check each time a new guest joins. For a one-off gathering, photograph the controller arrangement and menu path after the rehearsal so another host can reproduce it.

Common mistakes and fixes

Confusing local wireless with split-screen

Symptom: The product page advertises eight local players, but the group expects eight views on one television.
Fix: Look specifically for a same-console split-screen limit. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s documented limits are four on one Switch and eight through local wireless.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Arriving with too few controllers

Symptom: Only two people can join despite having a four-player game.
Fix: Count compatible controllers before the session, pair them in advance and test the player-join screen.

Applying one platform’s limit to another

Symptom: A mode shown for Switch is missing on PlayStation, or a claimed eight-player setup cannot be found.
Fix: Recheck the exact platform and mode. CrossWorlds’ published statements distinguish one-to-four local play, Switch local communication for up to eight and PlayStation split-screen modes.

Buying an older listing without checking support

Symptom: A listing or product sheet promises a local mode, but current store information is unclear.
Fix: Confirm the edition, supported console and present availability. Team Sonic Racing’s cited product information was updated in 2018, so its current status should not be assumed.

Leaving assistance settings to chance

Symptom: New players repeatedly leave the track while experienced players dominate.
Fix: Agree on assistance settings before racing. Smart Steering in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is specifically described by Nintendo as helping newer players stay on course.

Assuming every local mode uses the same rules

Symptom: A mode is available, but its race types, teams or player count differ from what the group expected.
Fix: Open the exact mode menu and read its player prompt. General “local play” wording can cover several modes, while a platform page may name only Grand Prix, Race Park, local communication or split-screen.

Ignoring updates and account prompts

Symptom: Guests wait while a console updates or a mode asks for setup steps no one anticipated.
Fix: Start each game once before the event, install required updates, pair controllers and complete any profile prompts. Do not wait until the group is seated to discover that the selected mode is unavailable offline.

Which choice fits common group scenarios?

Your situation Most logical starting point Why Check first
Four people, one Switch and one TV Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Its documented same-console limit is four split-screen players Four compatible controller inputs and TV or tabletop mode
Several Switch consoles, up to eight players Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Both publish Switch local-wireless or local-communication options up to eight One copy per player for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe; exact CrossWorlds mode and edition
PlayStation group wanting local races Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds PlayStation information lists local split-screen in Grand Prix and Race Park Controller count and the exact PlayStation version
Players who want teamwork Team Sonic Racing Its product information emphasizes sharing power-ups and speed boosts Current availability and four-player split-screen support on your platform
Adults and children with very different experience Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Smart Steering can help newer players remain on course Agree on assistance settings so the rules feel fair

What to verify at purchase time

Game features are not the same as a current retail guarantee. Before paying, confirm the console edition, regional release, included or required software, supported local mode, maximum players for that mode and current stock. Prices and retailer availability were not established for these choices and should be checked immediately before purchase.

For a controller purchase, verify the console’s compatibility list and the number of inputs the game accepts in the chosen mode. Avoid buying a bundle merely because its headline player count is larger than the number of controllers it actually supplies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For local wireless, add the software-copy question to your shopping list. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe requires one copy per player for that arrangement, so the cost and preparation differ substantially from buying one cartridge or download for a shared-console session. The exact price depends on retailer, region and edition; check those volatile details at the time of purchase.

Bottom line

Choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe when your priority is up to four players sharing one Switch, a broad 48-course selection and an option that can help beginners stay on track. Choose Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds when you need a multi-platform alternative or a Switch local-communication session for a larger group, while checking the platform-specific mode. Choose Team Sonic Racing when cooperation, shared power-ups and team boosts are more important than individual finishing order, but verify its present availability because the cited product information is from 2018.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between split-screen and local wireless racing?

Split-screen puts multiple racers on one console and display. Local wireless connects nearby consoles, usually giving each player a separate screen and potentially requiring a copy of the game for every participant.

How many people can play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on one Switch?

Nintendo lists up to four players in split-screen on one Switch in TV or tabletop mode. Up to eight is a local-wireless figure involving multiple consoles and one software copy per player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many controllers do I need for four-player local racing?

Plan on one compatible controller input per player. A console that includes two controllers is not automatically ready for four racers; confirm the game’s supported controller configurations.

Does Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds support eight players locally on every platform?

No universal limit should be assumed. SEGA lists one-to-four local play generally and up to eight through local communication on Nintendo Switch. PlayStation information lists local split-screen in Grand Prix and Race Park, so check the exact platform and mode.

Is Team Sonic Racing still available for local multiplayer?

Its SEGA product information describes four-player split-screen and cooperative mechanics, but that document was updated 21 May 2018. Verify current platform support, store availability and the local mode on the edition you intend to buy.

Which choice is best for players with different skill levels?

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a practical starting point because Nintendo describes Smart Steering as helping new players stay on course. Agree on assistance settings before racing so the group understands the rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can two local players join an online race in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?

Nintendo states that two local players can join online races together. That is not the same as offline local multiplayer and may require internet access, accounts and a paid online membership, depending on region and current terms.

What should I test before a local game night?

Connect every controller, install updates, open the exact local mode, confirm the player count and complete a short race. This catches missing hardware, platform-specific mode differences and setup prompts before guests arrive.

The Bottom Line

Match the game to the setup first: four people on one Switch points to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, larger Switch local-communication groups can consider Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, and cooperative teams can consider Team Sonic Racing after checking current availability. Count controllers, distinguish split-screen from multi-console play and verify platform-specific details before buying.
