Foldable phones can be durable, but their durability is model-specific rather than guaranteed by the category. A visible crease and some hinge movement are expected on many designs. The useful questions are whether the exact phone still opens, closes and responds normally; what testing the manufacturer actually performed; and what warranty, insurance and repair access exist where you live.

What “durable” means for a foldable phone

A conventional smartphone has no folding joint and a rigid cover glass. A foldable adds a flexible display layer, a hinge with moving parts and, on some models, a factory-installed inner screen film. Those parts create additional wear surfaces and more ways for dust, impact or liquid to affect the phone.

Durability evidence therefore comes in separate categories rather than one universal score:

  • Cycle endurance: how many opening and closing movements a test phone completed under stated conditions.
  • Environmental and mechanical testing: drops, pressure, moisture, debris and other laboratory or validation tests.
  • Functional durability: whether the hinge, touch layer, brightness and display continue to work after use.
  • Ownership durability: whether a damaged phone can be repaired at a reasonable cost with parts available in your country.

A manufacturer’s cycle target does not establish a real-world failure rate. It also cannot prove that every component, including the battery, cameras, outer display or charging port, will last for the same period. Treat each figure as evidence about a particular model and test, not as a promise for every foldable phone.

What current manufacturer testing actually shows

Samsung’s July 2026 engineering interview about the Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra and Flip8 says the latest Galaxy Z family completed more than 100 reliability-validation tests. The company describes tests involving drops, repeated folding, pressure, moisture and debris. That shows the breadth of its internal program, but it is not an independent, long-term ownership study and does not disclose the percentage of phones that fail in customers’ hands.

For the previous Fold6 and Flip6 generation, Samsung Gulf Support says the phones are designed for an average of more than 200,000 folding and unfolding cycles. Samsung illustrates that number as more than five years when the phone is opened and closed 100 times per day. The example is a usage calculation, not a five-year guarantee: users may open a phone more often, and a hinge or display can fail for reasons unrelated to cycle count.

Evidence What it covers What it does not establish
Fold6 and Flip6: more than 200,000 cycles on average Samsung’s stated design target for folding and unfolding, with a company example of over five years at 100 cycles per day A universal lifespan, a guarantee for every handset, or the failure rate of other models
Fold8, Fold8 Ultra and Flip8: more than 100 validation tests Samsung’s 2026 description of drops, repeated folding, pressure, moisture and debris testing Independent comparison data or the percentage of devices that fail during long-term ownership
EU ecodesign requirements Specified drop-test conditions and spare-part obligations within the regulation’s scope Worldwide coverage, free repairs or a guarantee that every part is available to every consumer

Because the tests measure different things, adding them together into a “durability score” would be misleading. There is also no trustworthy, comparable cross-brand real-world failure-rate statistic in the available evidence. A claim that one brand “lasts longest” cannot be inferred from these test descriptions.

Is a crease on the inner screen normal?

On Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold5, Samsung Gulf Support says the crease on the unfolded main screen is a normal characteristic of its flexible Ultra Thin Glass design and cannot be completely eliminated. The same guidance says the crease itself does not affect display quality or performance.

That guidance applies to the specified Samsung model; it is not a diagnostic rule for every brand or generation. A crease can be visible under normal lighting and become easier to see when the screen is viewed at an angle. Visibility alone is cosmetic. The important question is whether the screen still behaves normally.

Signs that merit a support assessment

  • The fold line becomes substantially deeper or develops an uneven ridge.
  • Touch input stops registering or works intermittently near the fold.
  • Brightness changes, flickering, lines, black areas or dead pixels appear.
  • A layer begins lifting, bubbling or separating from the display.
  • The change follows a drop, pressure, contact with debris or liquid exposure.

Do not press the crease flat, insert a tool under a lifted layer or remove the manufacturer-installed inner screen film. Those actions can turn a cosmetic concern into display damage and may affect warranty eligibility. Photograph a changing crease and record when the symptom started before contacting the manufacturer or an authorized repair service.

Which hinge sensations are normal, and which are warning signs?

Samsung’s Fold5 and Flip5 hinge FAQ explains that subtle curves or bends visible in direct light can result from the hinge design. It also says slight movement, clicking or a mildly “snaggy” feeling can come from hinge friction. These sensations, by themselves, do not prove a defect.

Use function and change over time as the practical test. Open and close the phone slowly without forcing it, and compare its movement with the feel described for that exact model. A hinge that remains consistent while the phone opens, closes and holds its intended positions is different from one that suddenly becomes stiff, loose or uneven.

Arrange an inspection promptly if you notice

  • Abnormal resistance, grinding or a hinge that stops before the normal open or closed position.
  • A new gap between the halves, a visibly skewed fold or a phone that no longer closes evenly.
  • Clicking accompanied by touch failure, display artifacts or a change in crease shape.
  • Debris movement, rattling, liquid exposure or damage after an impact.

Appearance cannot identify the failed part. A qualified technician can determine whether the issue involves the hinge, display assembly, protective film or another component.

How to interpret the 200,000-cycle claim

“More than 200,000” is an average design figure for the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Flip6, as stated by Samsung Gulf Support in 2024. Samsung’s illustration of 100 openings and closings per day produces more than five years of use. That arithmetic helps put the number in context, but it is not a prediction for an individual owner.

Cycle testing usually repeats a defined motion under controlled conditions. Everyday phones experience different opening angles, temperatures, pocket debris, drops, one-handed twisting and pressure on the display. A phone can therefore develop a problem before the stated cycle count, while another may continue working beyond it. The number also says nothing about battery aging, software support, accidental damage or the cost of replacing a damaged inner screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing models, ask whether the figure is for the exact generation, whether it is an average or a minimum, and what “cycle” means in the manufacturer’s test. Do not transfer the Fold6/Flip6 figure to a different model without a published claim for that model.

Warranty and repair can determine practical durability

A phone that can be repaired locally may be a better long-term purchase than one with a stronger laboratory claim but no accessible service route. Read the written terms for the exact model and market before buying.

Motorola Razr Fold 2026 in the United States

Motorola’s U.S. support guidance for the Razr Fold 2026 says each Motorola smartphone has a one-year limited warranty. It states that physical and liquid damage are excluded from the standard warranty. Motorola describes MotoCare protection options and says a repair estimate depends on the damage, the service route selected, coverage and warranty status. The guidance does not establish one universal repair price and does not apply outside the stated U.S. market.

Questions to answer before purchase

  • Does the standard warranty cover a hinge or inner-display failure that was not caused by an accident?
  • Are drops, crushed screens and liquid exposure excluded?
  • Is accidental-damage protection available, and does it specifically include the inner screen and hinge?
  • Where is the nearest authorized service center, and who performs the repair?
  • Will the provider give a written estimate before work begins?
  • Are replacement parts currently stocked in your country, and how long is the repair warranty?

Coverage, prices and service networks change. Save the model number, purchase receipt and warranty terms, and confirm current conditions in your region rather than relying on a policy written for another country.

What EU repair rules require

The consolidated text of European Union Regulation (EU) 2023/1670 sets conditions for foldable-phone drop testing and requires certain spare parts to be available to professional repairers for at least seven years after the end of a device’s placement on the market, subject to the regulation’s scope and conditions.

This is an EU regulatory requirement, not a worldwide promise of inexpensive repairs. It does not mean every part is available directly to consumers, that labor is free, or that a repair shop in another region can order the same component. EU buyers should still check the manufacturer’s local service network, quoted labor charge and whether the specific failure is covered.

How to compare two foldable phones responsibly

Use a checklist that keeps unlike evidence separate:

Comparison axis What to verify Why it matters
Cycle testing Exact model, stated cycle count, average versus minimum, and test assumptions Shows hinge-motion testing without predicting every owner’s lifespan
Other validation tests Whether drops, pressure, moisture and debris were tested and under what conditions Different hazards cannot be combined into one rating
Crease behavior Model-specific guidance and whether touch, brightness and image quality remain normal Separates an expected fold line from a functional defect
Warranty exposure Standard term, exclusions, accidental-damage option and regional limits Determines who pays after a drop, spill or component failure
Repair access Authorized center, parts availability, estimate process and repair warranty Converts a technical failure into a predictable ownership cost

Do not rank phones from a single cycle number or a marketing phrase such as “military-grade.” Ask for the test scope and the written service terms.

Habits that reduce avoidable foldable-phone damage

  1. Open and close the phone by the frame. Avoid pressing the flexible inner display while folding.
  2. Keep grit away from the hinge. Brush off visible debris; do not push it deeper with a pin, card or compressed-air blast held close to the joint.
  3. Respect the inner screen film. Leave the factory film in place unless the manufacturer or an authorized technician instructs otherwise.
  4. Use compatible accessories. A case or protector must not press on the hinge or interfere with the installed film. Compatibility should be confirmed for the exact model.
  5. Keep liquids and pressure away. Follow the phone’s own water-resistance limits, if any; do not assume a rating makes the hinge or inner display immune to damage.
  6. Record changes early. Photograph a new crease, gap or display artifact and stop forcing the hinge if movement changes suddenly.

What to do when something goes wrong

  1. Stop stressing the phone. Do not repeatedly fold it to reproduce a click, press a raised screen layer or remove the inner film.
  2. Check basic function once. Note whether the phone opens fully, touch responds across the screen, brightness is uniform and the outer display works.
  3. Document the event. Record the date, impact or liquid contact, photos of the hinge and crease, and any error messages.
  4. Check coverage before visiting a shop. Read the model- and region-specific warranty and accidental-damage terms.
  5. Use an authorized route when the display or hinge is involved. Ask for a written diagnosis, parts availability, total estimate and repair warranty.
  6. Back up data if the phone remains usable. A display or hinge problem can worsen during handling, and a service center may reset the device.

Bottom line

Foldable phones are not inherently disposable, but they demand a more specific durability assessment than a rigid phone. A normal crease or small amount of hinge movement can be part of the design; a changing crease, uneven fold, display fault or abnormal resistance deserves professional evaluation. Use cycle counts and validation tests as model-specific evidence, then make the ownership decision from the written warranty, local repair path, parts access and total cost in your country.
