Choose an AI processor for the job it will do, then compare complete systems on measured workload performance, memory capacity and bandwidth, sustained power, and total cost. A CPU that runs inference itself has different requirements from one that feeds an accelerator or handles data loading and orchestration. Core count, peak memory specifications, TDP, and processor price are useful screening details—not proof of the best result for your workload.
How do I choose a CPU for AI workloads?
Start by identifying where the processor sits in your AI pipeline. The CPU may run inference, prepare and move data, coordinate accelerators, or host general server services. Those jobs stress different parts of the system, so a benchmark or specification is useful only when it resembles the work you plan to run.

CPU-only inference
If the CPU will serve the model without an accelerator, test the actual model, precision, framework, request mix, and latency target. Measure both throughput and latency: a configuration that handles more requests overall may still fail a service-level target for individual requests.

When GPUs or other accelerators do the model computation, the CPU’s job may be feeding data, preprocessing, coordinating software, and keeping accelerators occupied. A host CPU specification does not predict accelerator performance. Measure the full configuration and check whether the CPU, memory, or I/O is limiting the accelerator’s utilization.

General server work
For services surrounding the AI application—such as storage, networking, or application logic—size the processor for those measured duties. Do not pay for a high core count or memory capability unless the deployment can use it.
Compare candidates on the same workload
Use a representative test on supported systems, not a headline specification as a substitute. Match the model, precision, framework, software versions, batch or request mix, memory population, and tuning as closely as possible. Record throughput and latency at the target service level, along with the full system configuration and test date.
| Comparison axis | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Workload performance | Throughput and latency on the target model and framework | Core count or a vendor claim cannot predict every workload. |
| Memory subsystem | Channels, supported DIMM type and rate, capacity, installed DIMMs, and measured bandwidth | Bandwidth or insufficient capacity can constrain inference and data movement. |
| Power and cooling | Sustained system watts under the target workload, performance per watt, and thermal or rack limits | CPU TDP excludes other system components and is not a utility-bill estimate. |
| Acquisition and operating cost | Current server quote, memory and accelerator costs, energy, cooling, and relevant licensing | Processor price alone omits substantial platform and operating costs. |
| Platform fit | Socket, board, firmware, memory compatibility, PCIe and I/O, support lifecycle | A processor must work in a supported, deployable system. |
| Evidence quality | Benchmark source, date, complete configuration, and whether the result is standardized or vendor-published | Results transfer only to the extent that their conditions match your use. |
Does memory bandwidth matter for AI inference?
It can matter greatly when inference is memory-bound, but advertised memory capability is not the same as bandwidth delivered by a particular server. Processor memory channels and supported memory rates set limits; DIMM type and population, firmware, and the platform determine the realized configuration. Capacity matters too: if the working data does not fit efficiently in memory, a high peak bandwidth figure will not solve the resulting constraint.

Check the exact CPU SKU and server documentation, then test with the intended DIMMs installed in the intended slots. Report the actual population with benchmark results. A transfer rate in MT/s describes data transfers per second, not achieved application bandwidth in GB/s.
How vendor specifications differ
AMD’s EPYC 9004 family materials describe up to 12 DDR5 memory channels; that is a family capability, not a promise that every SKU and system will achieve a particular bandwidth. Intel’s Xeon 6 support material describes DDR5-6400 support and MRDIMM transfer rates up to 8,800 MT/s. Intel says MRDIMM can provide more than 37% greater bandwidth than RDIMM; treat that as Intel’s stated capability, not a measured uplift for your model or deployment.
How much power does an AI server CPU use?
There is no reliable whole-server power estimate in a processor’s TDP alone. Measure sustained watts for the complete system while it runs the target workload, and record the performance achieved at that power. Memory, accelerators, storage, cooling, and facility overhead all affect energy use and operating cost.

Compare performance per watt only when the workload, system boundary, and measurement conditions are aligned. A CPU with a higher TDP may still be preferable if it delivers more useful work within your power and cooling limits; conversely, a lower TDP does not guarantee lower total system consumption.

Vendor benchmark pages can help identify candidate configurations, but the result belongs to the stated vendor, benchmark, software, and hardware setup. AMD’s EPYC 9005 inference page compares two-socket EPYC systems with a two-socket Xeon 6980P system. AMD reports the following total AIUCpm results for those configurations:
| Configuration in AMD’s comparison | AMD-reported total AIUCpm | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2-socket EPYC 9965 | 6,067.53 | Vendor-published result; page lists 500 W TDP for the configuration. |
| 2-socket EPYC 9755 | 4,073.42 | Vendor-published result; page lists 500 W TDP for the configuration. |
| 2-socket Intel Xeon 6980P | 3,550.50 | Vendor-published comparison result; page lists 500 W TDP for the configuration. |
AMD’s cited setup includes 1.5 TB of DDR5-6400 memory and specifies storage, networking, operating system, kernel, and BIOS details on its page. Those results are evidence about the listed systems, not an independent universal ranking of processors. AMD also warns that some aggregate AI throughput tests derived from TPCx-AI do not comply with the TPCx-AI specification; do not describe such a derived test as a compliant or published TPCx-AI score.

Intel describes Xeon 6 as a family with distinct P-core and E-core segments and different platform aims. Its product brief positions Xeon 6900-series processors for high-performance, high-memory-bandwidth cloud, HPC, and AI platforms, and states up to 500 W TDP for relevant Xeon 6 P-core family materials. Verify the precise SKU’s memory and power limits before comparing it with another processor.
How do I compare processor price and performance per dollar?
Use a workload denominator: calculate the cost per useful output—such as requests or tokens served while meeting a defined latency target—rather than dividing by core count or relying on a processor’s list price. Build the comparison from a current quote for the complete system and measured energy use under the target workload. Include memory, accelerators, storage, cooling, and licensing where relevant.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →AMD’s product page listed EPYC 9965 at $11,988 as a 1K-unit price when accessed in 2026, and identified the entry with 192 cores and 500 W TDP. That quantity price is not a retail quote, a complete-server cost, or a cost-per-AI-result measure. Prices and availability can vary by geography, quantity, and date, so obtain a current quote for the system you can actually buy.
Check platform constraints before selecting a SKU
Before buying or deploying, confirm compatibility at the exact component level. A technically attractive processor is not a suitable choice if the board, DIMMs, cooling, firmware, or available power cannot support it.
- Verify the socket and motherboard support for the exact processor SKU.
- Confirm DIMM type, supported rates, capacity, and population rules for the server.
- Check firmware and BIOS support, PCIe and other I/O needs, and the system’s support lifecycle.
- Ensure cooling, rack limits, and available power cover sustained workload operation.
- Benchmark the configured system with the software and workload you intend to deploy.
A practical decision rule
Shortlist processors only after matching them to the pipeline stage and supported platform. Then choose using measured target-workload performance, memory behavior, sustained system power, and a complete-system cost model. If the benchmark conditions or pricing do not match your deployment, treat the result as a lead for further testing—not as proof of a winner.
